It's definitely a panicked decision. By any accounting, Chryst is a good to very good coach. They are having an off year this year, but there is no reason to think UW wouldn't rebound next year. In terms of consistent success, he's been better than both Alvarez and Bielema. I'm not sure how much better they can get under Leonhard, and there is a lot of potential downside if he ends up being the next Lou Tepper.
Weren't they 68-24 under Bielema and 67-25 under Chryst?

Were they afraid he might be leaving for a HC gig somewhere ? Does he really think he's THAT ready ?
He absolutely is, and has been a candidate for HC jobs elsewhere including here. The Packers also tried to hire him as DC last offseason.

Leonhard is a Badger to his bones but he couldn't wait forever. He's been unequivocally the most important element of Chryst's success.

Has to be a HC job. He turned down the Packers a few years ago. Have to think it was a "our star recruiter and DC" is unhappy let's retain him and get a more creative offense in here.

AGREED! It's interesting that they are going from an offensive guru in Chryst to a defensive coordinator in Leonard as head coach. As I viewed the game, their defense gave the Illini all they could handle for most of the game; it was their offense and special teams that turned the ball over and couldn't run the ball or solve our 8 in the box defensive scheme.
Is turning the reins over to a defensive coach going to solve their issues? Might be some 6-3 games in their future...

They are going all in on Leonard. He's their new coach and no Interim about it. Sink or swim, he's it. They can't try him out and...then what? slide someone else in over him.

There's a strong odor of panic in Madison these days....

Agreed. It’s understandable to lose to the two teams who will play for the big ten championship. Could’ve rebounded vs rest of BIG.

I think looking at it statistically is kind of a trap.

Yes, Chryst and Bielema have similar records, but a lot of it is that Leonhard's defense carried the program.

Chryst(a offensive guy and former QB Coach at multiple stops) hitched his wagon to a 5 star QB who has not shown an ounce of improvement. He has nothing consistent when the run game isn't there.

I mean it's not even clear that Wisconsin was trending down imo, many long tenured coaches have down years. The only other multiple time West-winner is Northwestern and look at how they have been doing.

Wisconsin is 0-2, all the other West teams are 1-1 in conference play. It definitely seems like a risky move the more you look at it, and Wisconsin is now banking on a DC turned HC mid-season who has zero head coaching experience.

I think that's a gamble they will ultimately lose.

Sports happiness/dissatisfaction is based on the level at which you exceed or underperform expectations.

If you except your team to go 6-6 and and they go 7-5, you’re happy.
If you except your team to go 8-4 and they go 7-5, you’re unhappy.

Same record, different expectations, different fan sentiment.

Once you’ve been good for 20 years, you’re no longer satisfied with good, you now want great.

The risky thing, though, about sacrificing good for great is sometimes you sacrifice good for bad, like Nebraska with Bo Pelini.

Here’s hoping Wisky takes a step back and further opens the door for us to take a step forward.
