This is a huge risk. Chryst had Wisky at their ceiling in terms of performance, and they could easily fall back into the middle of the pack or lower if Illinois continues to gain traction and Nebraska makes a good hire.
I think what the people making this decision would argue is that losing Leonhard, potentially within the conference, was a bigger risk.

Make no mistake, that's his defense and it has been driving the ship for that program for years now.

Nonetheless, you're right, this could definitely go south for them

This is Wisconsin’s Nebraska firing Bo Pelini moment. They had something pretty good but they just don’t understand that. They think they should be where OSU and Michigan and PSU are but they never have been that and they never will be. They were at a solid level for Wisconsin and got greedy. Good luck finding your way back up there.
I would exclude PSU from thay grouping. In B1G tiers it's is

OSU

Michigan

PSU

MSU, Wisconsin

Pretty much everyone else.... For now

Leonhard's defense looks miles better with an offense that doesn't completely suck. If they even had a real ball control offense that actually did that their defense looks better.

Think Leonhard embraces the spread ball control similar to BB and they right that ship relatively quickly in the next year or two
I understand that if the offense can't stay on the field, the defense may be negatively affected. But Wisconsin's defense has been more than affected this year.....it has been bad (see "Points Allowed" stats below). Leonard's defenses have been strong in the past several years. But the Wisconsin defensive results so far this year are with his schemes and his recruits. Seems risky to hand him the keys with this year's defensive play results.

That's very fair. All the press and reporting has been that Leonhard is a great recruiter and several seasons is more than enough to give him some leeway this year.

I’m not sure if they expect to be at Ohio St level, but they do expect to be closer to them than Illinois. Truth is most programs — and especially the fans — when they have success, they expect to build upon that and take next step. It just ain’t that easy, but that doesn’t temper expectations. Heck, I remember seeing posts on here after Illini bball lost last year in tournament that if BU didn’t get Illini to Sweet 16 or better over next couple years that maybe we should look elsewhere for a coach.

Just watched the Wisky press conference introducing Leonhard. Very awkward. The AD was trying to sound decisive, but failed. He came off as "this had better work or I'm screwed". Leonhard looked a bit like a deer in the headlights.

This is just weird. If we had a coach with Chryst's record, we'd be building statues. I wonder if the AD tried to get tough on Chryst and he called their bluff, walking away with $16M.

They said in the presser that they AGREED (Chryst agreed) to a much smaller number and they'd announce it at a later time...
I didn't catch the "much smaller number" comment, just that they had reached agreement. And the reporter said he had heard $16M to $19M.

It's real hard to move up to the next tier in football. Not that many teams have done it really. My guess is that with Chryst that there's a sense things will go backwards. Teams like Illinois and Wisconsin can't afford to go backwards because getting back into contention is a tough process.

I remember thinking that Chryst woudn't be a good hire for us because he was so vanilla. I will say that I'm no fan of seeing Wisconsin go backwards much. Fleck, yes. Iowa, yes under any coach. NW, yes, doubly with Fitz. I'd kinda like to see us battling Purdue, Wisconsin and then the newcomers.

Actually, it was long regarded as a giant mistake that Nebraska didn't give Pelini the job when they fired Frank Solich and he made a big push for it as the DC/Interim. Hiring him a few years later was thought to be "fixing" that error.

People are just doing lazy one-size-fits-all take slinging portraying this as Wisconsin thinking they're too good for Chryst. That's not what's happening here. They're scared of what this looks like without Leonhard so they're making a calculated - if panicked - decision.

Yes the question from the reporter was about their understanding of his contract (being $16-$19M0), and how were they going to pay for it, and where was the money coming from (unusually straightforward question from a sports reporter imho)... and the AD said that the number they had agreed upon with Chryst was much smaller than what was reported, and they would announce the details later...

Were they afraid he might be leaving for a HC gig somewhere ? Does he really think he's THAT ready ? Or were they afraid he might 'move on' as a DC to a flashier P5 school ?

It's definitely a panicked decision. By any accounting, Chryst is a good to very good coach. They are having an off year this year, but there is no reason to think UW wouldn't rebound next year. In terms of consistent success, he's been better than both Alvarez and Bielema. I'm not sure how much better they can get under Leonhard, and there is a lot of potential downside if he ends up being the next Lou Tepper.
