Should we be worried they poach Walters?
Yes.

I believe Eric Bieniemy turned them down when they hired Dorrell, but as he keeps getting (unjustifiably) passed over for NFL jobs, maybe his alma mater gets more appealing?

You'd figure Tom Herman might be a name that gets tossed around there as well.

But Walters will be on the list. Are they willing to take that risk?

Could they afford his buyout, and would they be willing do cough up that kind of money? Everything I’ve heard about CU (from my father-in-law who did a brief stint there) is that they are inept at getting and retaining talent.

I don't think NFL teams passing over Bienemy is unjustified, and no I'm not going "But he's a criminal!!!"

It's the same reason I think teams should have been more skeptical of hiring Hackett and why even though I'm giving Getsy time for the Bears, I'm skeptical there too.

They worked with some QBs who make them look really, really good. When it's them on the line without a superstar at QB, how will they really perform? I get Hackett has Russ, but their offense has looked miserable.

Successful offensive coordinators in the NFL are now considered for head coaching positions based on how much they physically resemble Sean McVay, in a way that is shockingly un-subtle. Obviously certain people are more able to look like that than others.

For defensive coordinators the stereotype in terms of appearance and way of carrying oneself has developed quite differently, and so the coaches rising through that pathway look quite different.

Which is to say it is a flat, objective reality that if Bieniemy were a young stubble-faced white guy he would be an NFL head coach. Though it's also true that if he were having the exact same amount of success on the defensive side of the ball he would also be an NFL head coach. It's all quite absurd.

I have no doubt racism has hurt his ability to get a job, but I don't think it's the only reason.

Im not disagreeing with you on a large part of your thesis, but there is more to the Eric Bieniemy story than him being a chubby black guy in a interview waiting room full of thin white dudes

What that story is ? I dont know, but he has flat out under impressed about 15 different NFL teams these past 3 years

You can absolutely be an understated, relate-to-the-guys, not out of "Moneyball" central casting coach and get an NFL head job. You just have to be a DC not an OC.

And of course this version of the stereotype is new. Pete Carmichael with the Saints was too dorky to get a head job when he was the hot OC 15 years ago. But then the Rams took a risk with McVay and now everything is different.

The Bucs, then the worst team in football, took a risk and tried something aesthetically different with Tony Dungy all those years ago as well. That set off a boomlet with guys like Lovie and Mike Tomlin and Marvin Lewis having some success and now there is a template there.

And the most absurd and ironic part of all of this is that Mike McDaniel, whose father is African-American, was snapped up in five minutes nonetheless because he looks and carries himself in the way NFL owners expect an offensive mastermind to. Robert Saleh is a Lebanese Muslim, but more importantly he's a bald-headed intense personality in terrific shape, he's the defensive leader of men stereotype to a T.

The stereotypes have changed for DC's, they've changed for quarterbacks, but in order to change for offensive playcallers someone is going to have to be the one to change them, and no one from diverse backgrounds are being given those opportunities at the moment.

Pretty darn fun to be the team to help expedite that one.

Edit: Also hilarious BB ensured Chryst wasn't going to pass his win total at Wisky. Chryst is forever 1 win shy of tying him.
Wow! Has there ever been another situation in which a coach with Chryst's level of success has been fired mid-season? They are obviously doing this to lock in Leonhard, we will see if it's the right decision.

And yet I can’t help but feel a bit slighted at that too. It’s like the loss to Illinois was just far too unacceptable to accept for them. Years past, okay, but I think we’re an entirely new animal now.
