Who is the athletic director at Colorado?
Rick George.

He’s already hired Mel Tucker and Karl Dorrell.

Both of those guys had large decade-ish stints in the NFL. Dorrell had a run at UCLA as the HC from 03-07 but was fired.

Other than Tucker’s one magical year (which may have been a fluke) neither coach is having tons of success.

Bottom line: Rick George seems to value NFL experience over recent (last five years)/relevant (college level) head coaching experience.

That formula hasn’t quite worked out so we will see if he goes down that path again.

If he does, Walters doesn’t fit…unless RG loses the “Hefty NFL experience” requirement. If that happens Walters is a perfect fit.

We can't even find a QB who knows the laces are supposed to be on your throwing hand

Laughery probably redshirting as well. That's a pretty good room IMO as long as McCray is back and healthy. But if BB doesn't feel good about it, he's going to have a pretty epic pitch in the transfer portal to bring in immediate help.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him bring in a transfer if number of scholarships allow. I’m not sold on Love. I do like that Anderson and Feagin are on the bigger side.

On a side note, when McCray went down I’m a little surprised they didn’t work out some sets with a TE as RB/FB given problems they’ve had inside the 10. Heck Marchese has played like 10 positions hasn’t he? What’s one more.

One more thing, BB is 51, has two kids and previously has been bouncing around. I think he wants a stable life for his family and C-U is a great place to raise a family. I think he wants to finish his career here. He is making great money and has a great boss. Why leave?
Because realistically for the foreseeable future illinois is not a place you can win a CFP. Most of these coaches are the most competitive people alive which is why he is a successful P5 coach. Our ceiling right now would be his Wisconsin teams. If a top 10 resource program came knocking (think this past year with USC and Oklahoma), I think he’d very much consider it.

For the record, I don’t think this will happen and I don’t think he’ll move for a slightly elevated program.

For sure. What we have going for us is that those kinds of programs are going to look with much more skepticism at his Arkansas tenure than we did. Especially if it's an SEC school where they regard themselves as a different level of football.

Not sure there's going to be that kind of A+ job open this offseason though. The NFL could come calling for someone maybe.

Surprised we are not getting any strong recruiting news with our start!

Should we be getting commits and or flips at this time?
most recruits are right in the thick of the last week or two of regular season & then playoffs start . I doubt we get much news until mid - late November

Rick George has been AD at Colorado for awhile now . didn’t he hire at least one coach before Tucker ??

He’s got to get it right this time or they will be in the AAC playing Tulsa , Rice & SMU soon

He got there right after Mike MacIntyre was hired. So he’s hired 2 of their last 3.

He already makes really good money. Once you fail at the P5 level it is hard to get back. BB had to prove himself in the NFL to come back to our program and that’s with all his college success

he needs to pick a program that is a good fit

If you're a really good defensive coordinator, you will get ample opportunities if you fail as a head coach. Muschamp, Diaz are recent examples of poor head coaches who are getting paid >$1 million to be a DC again.

Know how Fleck got Nubin out of St. Charles? We didn't offer.

I remember this recruitment differently. I remember Illinois offered early (Rivals says we offered, 247 says we offered and we're one of the first) but Minnesota offered fairly soon but, more importantly, prioritized Nubin a lot more than Illinois. Lovie preferred to take his time, PJ smelled an opportunity to lock it up early. Dug into the site search and looks like Nubin even visited campus back in 2017 (ugh). I remember being really disappointed that Lovie whiffed on him because of him being in-state and a tall CB, right up Lovie's system preferences. Here's what I wrote in 2018:

Optimistic view: Nubin's hometown is ~10 miles from Fleck's hometown, so it makes sense. And it's one recruit, tough to judge the implications.

Pessimistic view: Of all the suburbs, the West suburbs was Illinois' most successful recruiting ground (comparative to Iowa's dominance in other suburb areas) and now there is evidence that Fleck can go into that area and get a kid that seemed built for Lovie's defensive mantra.

For those who might be in the know - how does Illini football available NIL $$ compare with others in the BIG? I know we are highly competitive in Basketball, but what about football? We’re going to need that to translate current on-field success into sustainable recruiting success.

LOL...easy question to ask on a 60 degree and sunny afternoon after a big win. But ask the same question on Jan. 23rd or Feb. 18th and you might get a completely different answer.

As a kid I was raised in central Illinois. I chose to attend the University of Arizona. It was a lot more pleasant walking to class and going to golf practice....not to mention playing in the Tucson Open in Feb. BB assuredly has a different set of priorities, but I would gander that you may be correct about a long tenure in C-U....or at least hope that will be the case.

I would think we are competitive in terms of NIL for football. My conservative guess if it was ranked we'd be top 50 somewhere?

Bielema mentioned that the entire OL has 12k deals? Don't remember specifically.

$1,000/month is enough to pop for the occasional 32 ounce steak dinner at the Beef House down the road in Covington now that Cliff Hagens is closed

Former Illini Rick George. His recruitment of Hart Lee Dykes was the source of one of our NCAA violations during the White years.
who is infamous, I believe , for getting 4 different schools on probation for his recruitment shenanigans which were ubiquitous in the mid 1980s

Kankakee has always had athletes. Some go to Bishop Mac. Not all their athletes play football.
My old high school in the south suburbs would play Bishop Mac in non-con football in the 1970's- 1980's.
I cant remember one player on the Illini from there, although we must have had a couple.
They were decent, but not nearly as good as Joliet Catholic or Providence, who's players start playing PopWarner in 2nd grade
