This was the view the administration and new AD Mike Thomas apparently took at the time. I thought Illinois needed an outside the box hire, coming off of the Ron Turner and Ron Zook eras.

My sense is Leach is the type of guy fans learn to like when the wins come. Certainly he divided the administration at Texas Tech. However, winning somewhat consistently at Texas Tech, Washington State, and now Mississippi State is fairly impressive.

Bottom line: I would have taken Leach over Beckman. And there were few coaches, if any, I would have taken over Leach at the time.

Credit Whitman for hiring (and firing) Lovie and then hiring Coach B. I’m not sure who would have been a better hire than Lovie, a real outside of the box coach pick - especially considering the time of year he started.

He went to 10 bowls in 10 years at a backwater like Texas Tech. He won a Pac10 north title and went to 6 bowl games in 8 years at WSU, another backwater. In his third year at a 3rd backwater, he's ranked. He** yes I would have hired Leach, in a heartbeat

Probably a not-credible account wanting clicks, or Fleck's agent trying to stir the pot for a raise. But, inter-conference poaching is so taboo, that even a sports agent wouldn't pull this stunt.

Thank you. Leach would have won some games and be shown the door. Bielema is a perfect fit culturally. And he knows how to win.
