Michigan State 23, Illinois 15 Postgame

We had our chances. A LOT of them. In many ways, we outplayed MSU for a majority of the game. We just couldn’t score, and our special teams didn’t help.

The thing is that at least 9-3, and a big ten west champion is still very much a realistic possibility. This loss hurts because we WERE the better team and lost a winnable game, but If someone would have said that we could go 9-3 at the beginning of the year, no one would have cared how or who we beat. This one hurts tonight, but it’s n some ways doesn’t matter in the big picture.

Regroup, and beat Purdue next week!

We got over our skis a bit and underestimated the a supposedly depleted Michigan State team. MSU is a talented team. They were 11-2 last year. This seems to be the first receiving core that with enough to go toe to toe with our secondary.

But after all of that we outgained them and just made a series of blunders--in all phases of the game including the coaching. The special teams were pretty much a disaster.

This might be good in the grand scheme. Maybe this team cant compete in a new years 6 bowl. Maybe this will save us the embarrassment of getting destroyed by a real top 10ish team. I'm cool with kentucky, Oregon state, or Syracuse type matchup
I kind of agree with this. It also sucks that we are gonna have to hear BTW Champion that would finish in last place in the East. And yes, losing to Indiana, and MSU after last week's issue, would have us headed to the bottom of the East.

Much as I love it, the transitive property doesn't work in sports. The only way to know if we would be on the bottom of the East is if we were in the East, which means we would have played a completely different schedule.

The good:
1) Chase got another 100 yard game
2) Nobody died

The bad (this will be long so apologies):
1) Really starting to have a bad feeling about Lunney. Hope I turn out to be wrong because he's made some amazing play calls this season and seems like a really bright guy and recruiter. But, more often, he continues to call some complete head-scratchingly asinine plays at terrible times.
1a) Why does he not trust TD to stretch the field a little bit? CB might have gotten 150 yds if the linebackers had to stay honest and not sell out for the run so often.
1b) Why in God's name does he insist on putting the QB in the deep shotgun and hand the ball to CB 12 yards in the backfield on 3rd and 1?
1c) Why not put TD under center and have Philstrom push the nose guard forward for a yard on 3rd and 1? I saw him manhandling D linemen on several plays.
1d) The lateral screen to the smallest freshman we have must stop. I love HB's potential and think he will be great, but that aint the play right now. Just a total waste of a down there.
1e) Get to work on the red zone calls, my God. The game would have been totally different if we take that opening interception down for a touchdown. By the way, the wind was at our back during that drive. Not even an attempt into the EZ?
1f) You're calling short crossing routes in the middle of the field with under 15 seconds from the 30 yard line with no timeouts?????????
2) Bad day for the D to lay an egg. MSU dominated our D line - with the exception of just a few series - and they gashed us with big play after big play, especially long runs. Really uncharacteristic of our guys for some reason.
3) Is Josh McCray really hurt more than we've been led to believe? Why not soften their D line up with him busting their chops for a couple series especially when we were going against the wind?
4) You cannot tell me we don't have a kid on campus who could walk on and beat out our punter. Embarrasingly bad
5) As much as I'm worried about Lunney, my mind is already made up on Snyder. He will not be here next year, and probably should not be on the field for the Purdue game. Our special teams is the worst in the league. Really boneheaded mistakes being made at this point in the season.

MSU deserved the win despite trying to give it to us at the end with play calling, but we were not ready to play. Really no excuse to lose that one given the circumstances. And that is a big letdown, no other way to look at it. However, I'm hopeful the coaches and players learn from this game similar to how they appeared to learn from the Indiana loss. Still can be an amazing year. No matter what, it will be a very good to great year; but there is still potential to be amazing. Hopeful it still will be.

The ugly:
1) If I never hear a game called by Matt Millen, it will be an eternity too soon. I truly believe hell has a non stop stream of games called by he and Jake Butts. Just an atrocious announcer.
2) Big Ten referees. Need I say more? Really, Big Ten, please for the love of all that is holy, hire a competent director of officiating and clean this disaster up in both revenue sports. It is beyond ridiculous how bad it is. They are literally influencing the majority of games in the league on a weekly basis.

Minnesota whipped MSU in East Lansing and we beat them…?

Big Ten isn’t great overall and the East has the better rep because of two teams. We didn’t lose today because MSU is better 9 times out of 10, and that’s what makes this so hard to take.
