1. Sparty and Nebraska aren't the two best teams we've played this year, but they're the two most talented and that was easy to see in the trenches.

2. The noise around the MSU suspension incident and the weather were two big challenges for this game. One of the two teams handled them, one didn't. Not much more to the story than that really.

3. We were awful in this game, deserved to lose, and would look ridiculous complaining. That said, MSU negated the personnel crisis their violent felonies generated by fake injuries they were barely even pretending with. The rule COULD be that you have to sit out the series if you require assistance getting off the field. No sympathy for us whatsoever, but should a defense be able to do that?

4. JB Pritzker owes me a bunch of money for the silly rule that in-state college games still can't be bet on. As I said in the pregame thread, the line was absurd, 10 points off. It was obvious the suspensions would be of a limited impact and that we were ill-suited to take maximum advantage.

5. A desperately needed injection of credibility for Mel Tucker may prove to be so much more costly to us than any current season consequences of this loss. That was a life preserver for that program.

6. Lol how on earth did Chase Brown still manage 136 yards in that game?

7. We've been so damn lucky this year across so many dimensions. It's been coming.

This one's on me. Illinois is 5-0 on games I attend this year and I didn't show today.

At the time, I agreed with going for it on 4th down on the first drive, but in retrospect taking the 3 might have changed things. Freaking retrospect.

Freaking Spartans.
There were some real avant garde 4th down decisions by both coaches today.

It was really the 4th and 19 call I disagreed with, but our red zone offense was so horrific I'm not sure either would have mattered.

definitely not putting the entire game on this but, dang it, if that taunting call that sustained their first TD drive didn't happen.....

i know our secondary get fired up and you can argue as to whether or not that was actually a penalty but i do not understand why that has to happen. at all. pick yourself up and play like you've been there before, dont hurt your team

It feels gross to get called for mean faces and bad words when members of their team literally assaulted the opposing team last week, though.

This is my fault for getting all excited for this game. All year, i just took these games in stride and didnt think about it too much. This past week, i was getting all jacked up for the this game and the future games and then they do this. Don't ever get too excited.
Please don't think like this. Yes, it's disappointing, but we're still 7-2. Before the season started, every single one of us would have killed to be 7-2. Inarguably, we've made massive progress. This team will give us more reasons to get excited this season. Be ready.

Well the only possible silver lining in this debacle might be that our defensive coordinator may not be such a hot commodity as he was prior to this game! Other than that we are still enjoying a great resurgence of Illini football!

Maybe I was at a different game than everyone else, but to say MSU outplayed us is just not true. They outSCORED us. Big difference.

Also, I wouldn’t even say we necessarily played poorly. We struggled with the same things we’ve struggled with all year: finishing drives, red zone scoring, and special teams. But even with all of that, we still were very much in this game all the way to the end.

To me, the biggest issue in this game vs. any other game this year is that we never really got to their QB. And that, in my humble opinion, was the biggest issue.

This was a very entertaining game in which we we’re on the losing side. Give MSU credit, but not too much. They were what we thought they were, but we just did enough to not win.

Agree 1000%. Just like at Indiana, there were moments like this where we shot ourselves int he foot, and moments that the referees just blew calls. The no-call pass interference where we should have had an automatic 1st down, and they turn around and get a TD. This outcome, and the Indiana outcome, could have been very different. Momentum swings stalled by refs, stalled by questionable injuries with MSU taking a knee, etc. And just like at Indiana, we won every statistic except for the scoreboard.

Also known as their OL outplaying us, which they did.

And then mercy me, Cal Haladay was extraordinary in that game. Paging Ryan Poles.

wow.........An Illini game with a lot on the line that never had any momentum after the first play interception by Sydney Brown........The failure to score TD;s in the red zone finally doomed the Illini with our second loss of the season......

Three game changing plays kinda sealed the deal for the Illini....

1............Chase fumbled the ball at the end of a 10 + yard gain as we were driving in the middle of the second quarter...............
2............The botched pitch to the left that went through CB's hands on a 4th & 2 ......................
3............The embarrassing 9 yard punt by our elder punter.............................

There were numerous other plays that thwarted our progress and poor starting field position was a factor also............

I didn't think we made good use of the wind when it was at our backs......

The refs were way below average B1G ineptness........Bret said the refs told him they messed up in letting msu change their decision on that penalty and the refs apologized and said it wouldn't happen again.......................WHAT ???????????

The suspenders controlled both lines of scrimmage more than we did.....not dominating , but got a play when they needed it.....

Chase got his 130 + rushing yards and we outgained msu , but lost the battle ......

it really did have the punchface loosier game aura about it .......It really really did......................

That's what I thought. More talented individually but we played better as a team, until today it was almost a wash just like the IU game
Nebraska has talented kids in the trenches but can't go three straight plays without some horrible calamity. Not a good way to beat Illinois.

Michigan State has talented kids in the trenches and cooled off an awful lot of NFL draft stocks today.
