11/14 Weekday Games

EIU did keep it close for a half but Ohio State pulled away in the 2nd half and cruised to an easy win. As much as I like EIU, I thought the praise for the Panthers late in the game was a bit much. That's not to say that they can't be good, especially in an OVC that's going to look completely different now with Murray State and Belmont no longer in the conference. But they're going to have to lean on players like Hodges and Rose and if those two struggle then it could be another long season.

They likely will get their first win of the season Monday as they take on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, an NAIA school out of Terre Haute. It is one of the cooler games of the year though as it is their annual Kid's Day game, where local elementary and junior high school kids get to spend part of their school day going to the game.

They'll face actual D-I competition again next weekend when they play in an MTE at Ohio U next Friday and Saturday against the Bobcats and Alabama State.

I'm jealous of Texas's new stadium. Student section right on top of the court on three sides (I think). Smaller capacity than ours but looks like it could become a pretty intimidating place to play.
Just saw this too. 375 million to build a 10,000 and change stadium in TEXAS???!?!?! How embarrassing!! I thought things were always bigger in Texas. And I don't accept the reason that it is a football school. I just can't get over it. How did this max capacity ever get approved?

I was shocked by that too. I wouldn't want it for Illinois but I get it. They'll sell it out every game. Still looks and sounds great from what I can tell on TV. And I'm sure the numbers still work out in their favor from a revenue standpoint.

Why? Our students are in the same spot, our arena is 1.5x the size and has way more character.

With respect to this game, though, a win over Texas in NYC would be a HUGE accomplishment.

I can’t tell if Gonzaga is struggling because of new pieces/ roles (i don’t remember from last year besides timme) or that Texas is making them uncomfortable.
And then Texas just hit like 8 3’s In a row. They can shoot!

Fun fact: SMWC has only started accepting make students in the last five or six years. (I worked at a sister high school in Chicago for a number of years and have a soft spot for the Sisters of Providence who run the school.) It'll be interesting to see what kind of team the they've fielded in that time

Never been a big fan of our renovation. There's a lot of dead space around the court. The suites and club seating take away from the intimidating atmosphere. Not a solid sea of orange from floor to rafters like it used to be. I think our student section is only on two sides. One baseline houses the band and special visitors and one sideline is just standard seating. For being such premium, highly visible seats, the baseline opposite the Krush can look pretty lame at times. Texas's student section looks to be like 25% bigger than ours. And the entire lower bowl looks absolutely raucous.

Even with our recent success, I've never heard the SFC get as loud as the Assembly Hall used to get. The amenities are nice and I'm sure the suites make certain people happy. But as someone who sits in the 200 section, I'm just concerned with the atmosphere and giving our team the best home court advantage in the country. And I don't think the renovation took the proper steps toward doing that. From what I can tell, Texas has done a good job of giving their team a good home court advantage, despite a smaller capacity.

Edit: to be clear, I wouldn't trade our stadium for theirs. But I think their lower level / student seating is better designed than ours.

Edit 2: According to Wikipedia, the Krush has 650 floor seats and 600 seats in the upper deck. Texas has 600 students in their standing room only section at the top of the stadium alone. Their student section might be twice the size of ours.

What’s a shame is that the Krush has a demand. Kids wanna sit down there. I wish it was bigger.

Hey, there's that one person who sits courtside opposite the Illini bench that always has to act like they're actually the coach out there and not Underwood (If you've watched the games, there's always in the lower left corner front row on TV; I think last season they had a Frazier jersey they would wear to all the home games). Maybe it's just me but having to constantly see that person on my screen just bugs me, and I really hadn't noticed them until the last couple of seasons.

I assume you meant male students here. It looks like they didn't agree to become co-ed until 2015. Them and Rose-Hulman apparently have a rivalry game there in Terre Haute every season.

When I went to Rose-Hulman ('02-'06), SMWC was all-female. Interesting to hear they play each other now. Rose is D3 and was all-male until 1995.

Either things have changed or EIU is playing an unusual game. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods was an all-girl school when I was last in Terre Haute.

She drives my wife absolutely crazy! Can't believe they haven't put a stop to her antics.

Great, now I'm gonna notice them and it's gonna bug me too (like not being able to get a stupid song out of my head). Thanks. ;)
