Virginia 70, Illinois 61 Postgame

Energy - yes

Shooting - He nearly put a hole in the backboard with a FT and dented the heel of rim on 2nd FT. Not a good shooter right now, or creator. He limits us, right now.
Shannon hurt us more than Harris today. Each player needs to know his limits..
We have great players.
...But they need to play to their strengths and avoid playing their weaknesses.

I mean, he didn't come back into the game and his shoulder was getting worked on while he was on the bench. We'll see. I'd prefer not to have a Trent situation where he's wearing a sling all season.
Fair enough. Didn’t know it was getting worked on.

And to be clear, I 100% think it’s crazy Bennett got a five minute review upon request to adjust the shot clock, and Brad couldn’t get a game changer review.

Just saying I thought zebras were pretty great up until then.

Us FT 4-9----Them 25-32. Duh...... They got 23 more FT attempts and made 21 more than us----we lost by 9. Just can't win like that. Refs swallowed their whistle way too much for VA.

Got away from playing Harris. Our coach played their game Instead of playing ours. Hawkins and RJ need to grow up fast. Also on Meyers I’m embarrassed by that hook Meyers was trying to get. :(
This is what I was thinking the entire game. We completely played Virginia's style. I thought Underwood was a fighter but he seemed to capitulate on the team's identity right from the start.

I'm sure this will get misconstrued and I'm 100% happy with the guys we have but sometimes it's nice to have a 7 foot tall AA to throw the ball into.

Haven’t felt this little disappointment after a loss in a long time. This team will have a special season, just gotta learn and move on!
I completely agree. Win or lose, this was great experience for the team going into the Big 10 season. It was a winnable game today, but Virginia was the better team at this point. There is no shame in that.

We clearly don’t have our late game go-to guy if Shannon is having an off night just yet. Not surprising given we have so many freshman/sophomores playing big minutes. That being said, none of our newcomers look the least bit intimidated or tentative. The talent is there and it’s ahead of schedule. Look out in March after we get a few months to gel

We played a great game for 36 minutes
our defense wore down at the end
officiating changed somewhat in the second half but wasn't the reason we lost
why no Sincere in the second half
why no full court press at all really for the whole game
Epps is a bucket maker but also a freshman
cavs got 10 more points than us in turnover transition plays
cavs shot 25-32 FT's
Illini shot 4-9 FT's
Illini had more O rebs and 3 less rebs total
we cleaned up our turnovers from previous game

BU , on the radio interview said....................

high level BB for November
we stopped executing up 2 with 3:20 to go
cavs are a good team
cavs PG won a natty in the past
gonna be a process and experience won out today
we are counting on 3-4 frosh
today was a speed bump
all Bennett talked to BU about before the game was how many Illini fans at the games
we have very very intelligent fans

and that's a wrap

GO ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really liked the effort today and terrific experience. VA limits possessions and so you have to value each one, which we didn’t do late. Not surprising, as I imagine most of our freshmen have never played in a game like that. Think our immaturity showed and I don’t mean that in a bad way.

But the film should be solid gold. Our possessions from about 8 minutes to 4 minutes where we came back and took the lead. Working the ball in and out, hockey assists for open 3’s. The last 3 minutes, too much hero ball and low percentage shots.

Never satisfied with a loss but this loss might actually not be the worst thing long term. Had we won today, probably get a top 10 ranking and not sure we are ready or mature of for that either. This loss should get everybody’s attention and let Brad really “grind” them, as Brad likes to say. Looking forward to watching this team grow. Go Illini!

Lot more positives than negatives in the weekend. So much room for improvement which is where you want to be 5 games in with a big neutral site win under your belt. UVA is maddening to play against. Bennett is an exceptional coach and tactician.

I don’t, Brad always loses to defense minded teams

All in all a good weekend for a very young team. Inexperience showed up the last 3 minutes. Starters didn’t shoot well and Shannon off today and tried to do too much. Free throw discrepancy was killer. Playing great overall considering they only have 5 games played together. Come March we could be REALLY good. Gonna be a fun year.

Good tournament overall. Got a split against top 25 teams, which will not hurt resume at all. In addition, this team gets much needed experience against top tier competition who have more experience. We will be a better team as a result.

Much rather have these types of non-conference losses than the ones we saw pre-Underwood.

This game is the equivalent of the MSU game in FB

A THUD game

BUT, fortunately very early in the season.

21 point from the free throw line.

Plenty of time in the season, play the games, and please stop talking about NT, etc.

We are capable of the likes of the FB game at UM

Just play teh game
Free throws definitely the difference. We did not get calls at the rim they did for some reason. I hope Shannon shows a little better free throw shooting and ball control at home this week. He need to live at the rim and the line

It's not like they deliberately tried to slow it down on offense. Unless he put the team in a position to get locked into a blowout, I think that's perfectly fine in November. See what they can do.

I was in the second row. The refs didn't cost us the game. The three pointer that Skyy fouled on was questionable and a game changer with us up two and had the board but they attacked the rim more than the Illini..
Virginia has a team drove and attacked the basket much more than our team as a whole so they got to the line more often and made them. Epps and Shannon attacked the rim but not like they did.. We had good looks from three especailly in the first half just did hit like vs UCLA.
