These type of QB transfers could be interesting to the staff depending on (a) if they bring in a one-year starter like Armstrong and/or (b) does Art come back. A one-year start and Art moving on could lead to the staff bringing in a guy like Hornsby with the hopes he can win the backup job in 2023 camp and then have a chance to win the job in 2024 camp. Could be a worthwhile risk for the right staff (coaches on the hot seat) or right situation (hypothetical above) because they either were well-regarded preps behind established starters (Hornsby) or injuries have limited their opportunities. I don't consider Card in this group because he's played enough at Texas to show he is successful, just not successful enough to unseat Ewers.
Definitely agree

Card is a real talented young man that will have his pick of schools. Ewers on the roster he saw the writing on the wall before Manning even committed to Texas. The appeal about Card is having a few years of eligibility. First concern is always have a competent QB. The "wish list for me" would be to have a QB that could play more than one season instead of switching in and out each season. Illinois will definitely have some QBs transfer out if not this year, than next year. It happened before the portal and will at multiple positions. The main difference now is we are adding more quality recruits and depth.

If TDV is trying to get an exemption, wouldn't that be a damper on recruiting a transfer? Why would a top guy entertain us if that situation is up in the air?

Do we know he is actually pursuing that?

The staff is moving foreword as if DeVito will not be here. Which is smart
Thank you, I figured as much. I was just wondering as far as perception to these transfers. The conversation going something like. "yeah, we're trying to get an exemption, but it's probably going to be turned down" I would think that still would leave a little doubt in these transfers minds. Of course if the appeal is declined quickly, it becomes a moot point.

I asked the question poorly. Are quality QB transfers willing to look at us with our current projected receiving corps then?
I think both the wr corps and quarterback could definitely use a upgrade.its like the chicken or the egg you upgrade either position at it will make it more attractive for the other.just my 2 cents

They haven’t even discussed another year with DeVito. Nor have they applied for a waiver.

0440,

Does DeVito even want to come back ?

I would say if he does chances have to be slim he gets the exemption.

sorry was a little late on the post

Does this imply that Elzy is not coming here??
Nope have no info on Elzy(sure hope he comes!) Just on what we already have in place and the fact that a great transfer will only help make the room stronger until we recruit the QB's we need.

Curious if any on this board have solid insight into how competitive the NIL deals for Illini FB players have been in comparison to other BIG schools. I’m sure this varies widely from position to position, but I am wondering whether the $$ truly is there to compete financially for some of these top skill position players.

I am not down on the WR position at all. Main concern would be if top guy or two would transfer out for some reason. Williams, Bryant, Hightower and Washington are decent core than you add on a number of young guys from the 2022 plus any possible transfers. Majority of those 2022 guys needed to bulk up. If Illinois can add Elzy he is ready to play when he steps on campus.

Wait and see who lose to portal/draft and who else we add onto the roster....we have spots to fill in this class and through the portal

Fan since Kiwane Garris
I am intrigued by QB Jeff Sims from the portal (and Georgia Tech) because he's got the arm, size, and legs of a future NFL QB. Two years of eligibility remaining.
Add some run-read-keep options to our shotgun look...
If our program could help him thrive...

It was implied on Illini guys that we do not. However, we aren’t competing for 5 star guys so we may well be competitive with the next level programs. I certainly hope so.

Jeremy Werner posted the same thing on his Twitter about being PWO. Had few low Division 1 offers and PWO offer from Wisconsin
I hope he turns into an All BIG player. May be the first one with an offer from Bemidji State. Sounds like a kid that has a ton of talent that blossomed late.
