It may be necessary to point out what should be the obvious:

Just because someone played a position at the college level does not mean they will be able to coach at the college level.
agree
and I generally am skeptical of hiring people just because they played for us.
he might be worth a call for a LB position coach spot , if we need one , only because his success as head coach as Loyola and his connections to the ILL HS Coaches - he possibly could be a great recruiter if he was okay being on the road alot at his age. He might now want that now

Obviously Holocek isn't going to step into a DC role in a power conference. But it would be interesting to see if he has any interest in a assistant role.

I've always assumed he had a job outside of coaching Loyola. So chasing coaching at the next level wasn't important to him and certainly not more important than raising his family.

It seems like the vast majority of coaches get GA jobs and do that for a couple years before getting their first position job. But a few have gone from high school.

One interesting one is Barry Alvarez who had two HS gigs over five years before becoming the Iowa LB coach.

Here's a few others stories. HS to College Coaching

I think it bears mentioning that Holocek hasn't put in the long years in HS because no one wanted him but rather for other reasons.

Further, I have no idea how good he might be. But the record sure is impressive.

It’s basically been said, but Bret had to have known this was coming for quite some time. To me, that’s key to this whole thing. Maybe some names are now available that weren’t when the initial plan was set, but this isn’t some out of the blue hire away that would cause a scramble.

To me, a calm and well planned Bret is a heck of a weapon to throw at a coaching search.

So we all know it’s Kane but we just can’t help ourselves with speculation right? He would be getting a big raise and his new contract would need to be approved before any actual announcement, correct?

BB knows this business and he plays chess while our previous coaches barely played checkers. He is not surprised by this and has various courses of action and won’t be caught fly footed

The only X factor in this is which players/recruits leave for PU. I think that is so much harder to judge

The other obvious point is that just because someone coaches at the high school level doesn't mean they wouldn't succeed as a coach at the college level. Either the person has expertise in motivation, training, etc., has the desire to put in the work, and has the requisite football knowledge or they don't.
By the logic of some on here it seems that Trent Dilfer will be a failure at UAB because his NFL and high school coaching career is trumped by the fact that he didn't "put in his dues" as a QB coach or OC first.
