SAN DIEGO — Matt Carpenter agreed Tuesday to a $12 million, two-year contract with the San Diego Padres after reviving his career with the New York Yankees in a season cut short by injury.

The agreement for the infielder/outfielder could be worth $21 million over two seasons if he has 550 plate appearances in each year.

See, at that price I wish we'd brought him back. He really fixed his approach and with the restrictions on the shift he could really be good as a lefty DH/bench bat. $6 million/year is not much even by our standards. We gave Dickerson $5 million last season.

Best of luck to Carp, hope he can continue to build on what he did last season before his injury.

Dan Caesar
For the first time in 18 years, the Cardinals are shopping for a lead play-by-play announcer.
Telecaster Bally Sports Midwest and the team are seeking a successor to Dan McLaughlin, who departed last week after 24 seasons in the booth and 25 overall on the television broadcast crew. It was what was termed a “mutual decision” following his third arrest on a drunken driving charge in a little more than 12 years. The latest, with a felony charge for being a “persistent” offender, occurred Dec. 4 in Creve Coeur.

BTW , can someone start a new 2023 St. Louis Cardinals thread........................

That's the hope. If not him, then I could see Mikolas or Montgomery being that. Montgomery being a sinker-ball lefty fits perfectly in Busch Stadium.
It seems like we've been missing the bulldog ace that can shut someone down in a big game since Carpenter retired and Waino has gone from an ace to a solid pitcher. Not a knock on Waino, he's good, just not a number 1 at this point.

Jack is the guy with the ceiling to battle to be a shutdown pitcher. He has shown glimpses. If he does, then things should be looking good for us as most of our pitchers are suited for Busch. Also, if he is an ace, it makes the lack of noise this off season easier to digest and we can utilize the trade deadline as the true end to roster movement in this cycle. Sounds crazy to think of the upcoming season trade deadline as an ended for offseason movement, but that is how I view it. See what we have, are we in it or not and make your moves, splashy or subtle.

Another thing I’m curious to see how it impacts this team is the pitch clock and how it relates to our players on base. We are a team that runs a bit. How strictly are they going to enforce this clock and how effective can we be on timing up when a pitch has to be delivered. Should see more action on the base paths.

Seems like the big effect it's had in the minors is increased steal attempts and efficiency. Should help Tommy. Makes me wish we still had Bader. Before his injury he looked like he'd finally figured out stealing and looked like he was on pace for 30+ steals. TON is the only other guy currently on our roster that's a true SB threat.
