In an NIL would you need to be kissing the butt of those rich donors and their 3rd cousins. Especially at a school like Purdue that already has had publicized issues with NIL.
I would doubt his race had as much to do with donors apprehensions as he was not the first choice. They wanted someone with head coaching experience. There have been a lot of hot coordinators that can't hack it as head coaches. There are also head coaches that can't make the step up, but you feel more comfortable with a guy with more experience.
If I were Purdue I would have wanted Jeff Traylor, and you would assume he would be attainable for a Big Ten school. Though maybe he sees Jimbo on thin ice and says 1 more year and I can get that Texas A&M job?
I am not a Jimbo guy but someone really soiled the sheets at A&M when they made his contract. There is no offset clause so it is fully guaranteed. Here would be his buyouts after each season is completed....

But he's such a combative in-your-face warrior, I think the draft process is going to allay those concerns more and more the closer scouts look.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if he goes in the teens. You just can't play much better at corner than he did this year. He probably does have particularly high stakes for his athletic measurables at combine/pro day though, that will be very meaningful either way.

His similarities with Sauce Gardner are also going to help Spoon a lot. Gardner is bigger and longer, but people will see that physicality and bravado on tape and think "oh, he's like the guy all of us wish we had drafted last year".

I don't disagree with your take but think it has more to do with the website rating him low is all. Maybe they didn't update the rankings but having him rated as the 11th best CB is crazy. Think they had Sydney Brown as 19th ranked S.
Spoon was probably 160 with a wet t-shirt coming out of high school. He is probably around 180 give or take a bit now. If he has game at the professional level a NFL staff can add 5-15 lbs of muscle onto his frame without slowing him down. Best corners I remember watching growing up were all 6'1 or shorter and had random frame sizes. Deion Sanders, Charles Woodson, Champ Bailey, Darrelle Revis, Ty Law, Aeneas Williams. Darrell Green was a beast at 5'9

Oh yeah, he's miles better and will be drafted ahead of most of the guys on that list, I hadn't clicked.
And Spoon has good (not elite, but good) length for a corner, he is long-armed for his adequate height. So it's not a question of comparison to short guys.
But yeah he's just really, really skinny. I do not have these numbers, but I would have to imagine he might have the lowest BMI in the league next year, and probably the lightest player above 6 feet.
I raise that not to question his NFL potential, but we're sitting here talking about him going in the teens, which is where I suspect this is headed if his athletic measurables in the draft process are what he's capable of. Begs the question then, why doesn't he go 4th overall like Gardner did? Well, because it's not a prototypical body, and non-QB top 10 picks are for prototypical bodies.
Right, Vontae was thick, almost a bit stumpy. Very different body getting to elite CB performance in a different way.
Both Vontae and Spoon are hall of fame trash talkers though. I lived in Scott Hall with Vontae his freshman year, one of the biggest personalities you'll ever meet.

I have never said Spoon was/wasn't the best CB. My original post was that he was ranked 11th best CB by that one site. Also stated that he went from popping up in the 1st Round, to 20s to teens possibly over time.
I have not looked at many mock drafts but my guess is Spoon is picked between the 3rd-6th best CB coming out and placed accordingly. That really could put him anywhere from teens to early 2nd round at worst case scenario. Draft number is just that, a number. If Spoon has the talent at the next level his frame will be fine because he will add onto it. Lucky for him he just turned 22 in the last month, unlucky for me my added weight now is not muscle

One big plus countering his slight frame is that Spoon lays the lumber at every possible opportunity, and I can't remember him ever missing substantial time with injury.
