Completely agree. Having Friday, Monday, and Thursday games in 7 day span was a tall order when I initially saw schedule, especially with IU having 5 days in between games.

Will be nice to have a more rested squad than OSU Tues. I expect a more polished Illini product and victory.
I mean I get it, but 3 of the last 5 games were at home and two of the teams were short handed and weren’t playing well at all. MSU was a solid solid effort and win. The two road games were as easy as a road game gets with a total laugher at Neby. I’m glad that stretch came now rather than the end of the season and it was one of the softer parts of the schedule. It’s time to get rested up and decide what this season means to them. The effort has been uneven and we need that to change if we’re going to make a real run.

and not Nebraska
going to need some of these if dribbling instead of driving and crisp passes goes forth. been shouting at the tv - box out and keep your feet on defense. lately it is move the ball and move without the ball is what the tv hears

I’ve given up on truly expecting consistency from this group - not THAT unfair for a team of mostly transfers and freshmen… - but you just got embarrassed at home and you’re hosting a team on a skid who’s desperate for a win. If you can’t come out with focus and intensify here, it’s essentially back to after the NU loss.

Focus and intensify hits the nail on the head
Sometimes one gets the feeling that this team is playing together for the first time or having and end of the week scrimmage in practice
Obviously not every mintue of the game, but the missed layups, lack or coordinated movement, missed free throw and the lens one is using to watch the game seems out of focus at timea.
Not easy to explain.

IU has not played well at all since the turn of the new year and are missing two key players. But let's not forget that they were projected to win or at least be near top of B1G this year. They have a lot of talent, even missing a pair of top players. They pummeled Wisconsin at home on Saturday and then had 5 days to rest and prepare for us. We had an emotional Friday night home game against MSU and a Monday evening game in MN, followed by a game 3 nights later. This always felt like a game to worry about.

My Dad had my tickets for the game last night, and he texted that "Illini's legs look shot...". Mix in possible sickness for a key player, it is simply a recipe for disaster. It is one game, and since we were not in position to win B1G regular season, it is not that big of deal.

I expect a bounce back effort on Tues. I will only worry then if we come out flat and lack execution.

That's the thing, though. It's not a one-off. It's a repeat of the Northwestern, Penn State, and Missouri games. Games where we appeared to be listless and not well prepared.

Not played well at all? They came in last night after beating Wisky by 20 at Wisky... I thought that would have gotten their attention.. but it didn't..

Need to win our next three going into Iowa. Would put us at 16-6 (7-4), which would be solid. Goal should be to try and get to 21/22 wins and then get hot and make a deep run in march
Looking to me like were going to need to win a couple of games in the Big Ten Tournament.
This team needs "to show up every time."

I totally disagree. We turned them over whenever the energy was there, like in the first minute and a half of the game and initially after we threw the press at them.
Unfortunately Indiana had the gas in the tank to play hard for 40 minutes. We had about 10.
Maybe OSU will be tired then after our 5 days of rest
I'll be ok with that.

I disagree.
We didn’t jack up a bunch of contested threes, turn the ball over constantly, & foul nearly 30 times, like the NW game.
We got buried by a brutal stretch in the first half where we couldn’t get the ball through the hoop no matter how good of a look we got.
IU had an All-American caliber playing lights out. You can criticize the strategy against him if you want. I think that’s fair, but guys were trying to do their jobs. I didn’t see apathy, I saw ineffectiveness. I think that’s an important nuance. It’s one that I can live with as a fan. Sometimes it’s not your night. The B1G schedule has given a few hard lessons to every team in the league. (Purdue being the lone exception) We got one last night.

Not played well at all? They came in last night after beating Wisky by 20 at Wisky... I thought that would have gotten their attention.. but it didn't..
1) I think most would agree that IU had not played well at all in the new year, until the last two games now (they lost their first three games of the year and got wiped out in Happy Valley prior to the Wisconsin game).

2) It might be semantics, but IU crushed Wisconsin at home by 18, not away, and then had plenty of time to rest and prep for the game in Champaign (for a rivalry game...even if they claim otherwise). This is a distinct advantage for IU, despite the fact that they are down a couple key pieces.

3) My general argument: IU is not a bad team, regardless of what their record and play was in the new year. You probably did not read my statement after word six if this is your conclusion. There are no real gimmies in the B1G this year. Tired legs may be an excuse; but if you watched the game, it looked like the Illini were a step slow and not due to laziness or discombobulation. This loss felt and looked much different than the PSU, Mizzou, and NW losses, IMO.

BUT if you feel that Illini treated this game as a cakewalk, then no reasoning will ever change your mindset.

Ideal scenario:
Ohio State beats Iowa tomorrow. We don’t want a team coming into our building on a 6 game skid.

I still don’t understand the level of pessimism. It’s college basketball. It’s January 20th. We’re going to make the tournament. Get it right, get rested, get focused and use the next 1.5 months to get even better. We’ve proven many times this season we can hang. It’s a puzzle that is close to being complete, one game doesn’t really matter. It just doesn’t y’all…

We will win this one.
I sure hope so.

Hopefully Mayer is better. And hopefully we get good Hawkins. He was MIA against IU. He really needs to catch and shoot. No more pump faking and driving into turnovers or bad shots.

We need a couple days off … Got guys sick … Legs are a little dead … Brad NOT a fan of how the calendar shakes out this year …

Wait....so we don't "suck"...we were "sick"!!?? Stupid letter/s.

I wonder if the guys followed the coaching staff’s scouting report at all. I said multiple times on the game thread that it is obvious the team lacked focus based on the observation of multiple missed layups and free throws.

The scouting report on TJD is to take away his left hand. DD, from what I could see, didn’t even attempt to do this. Instead, DD was a practice body for him.

I agree, we looked more than a step slow, however, on offense, we didn’t make IU work at all outside of the last 3 minutes of the first half, and that is why the deficit was cut to 10.

One play that was really telling was the 3 on 1 fast break with Epps having the ball. He chose not to pass it or throw the Oop to RJ, instead went up for one of his many missed and contested layups of the night. Everyone was looking for “theirs” instead of running the set or the spread offense.

IU’s confidence was building coming out of the Wisky game (at home) and the last time IU played our Illini they did beat us and clamped down our offense.

This was a repeat performance for IU against us in the BIG Tourament last March, this time, we didn’t have Kofi and Trent. Instead we had Epps and DD. TSJ had a big game and it wasn’t even noticed because of how bad our Illini play with a lack of team ball on offense.

I could keep going, but the Jekyll and Hyde personality of this team is daunting. When a team wants to punk us, they do and they have. With little to no resistance. Not the calling card of a normal BU team.

I have never seen a player with CoHawk's size and shooting ability pass up so many easy shots within 10 ft. of the basket. I begin to wonder if he has any credibility in making a jump hook from 6 ft. or a jumper from 10. Opponents are giving him that opportunity about 30 times a game. Instead, he will drive to 5 ft from the rim...turn...and throw it to Epps at 30 ft. away. No better shot in the game than a straight on jump hook from 6 ft. Defenses will guard Mayer or Dainja hard and physically in the paint, but when Hawk gets there, all they do is let him shoot and try to get in the passing lanes. If he is on the floor with Rodgers, defense becomes pretty easy.

He is the most frustrating Illinois player in recent memory for me to watch given the physical tools he has available and his repeated refusal to use them. I wish I understood his thought process out there.
