Offensively, there are some issues. We're not able to push the ball off rebounds and get into our phoenix offense (6 seconds or less). It's largely due to our inability to actually rebound (outrebound 34-27). Then in our halfcourt set, there's a lot of standing around, letting the shot clock get down, and having to hero-ball a drive into a congested paint. We play best when our bigs (relatively speaking lol) are picking, rolling, and sealing for our quick guards to get to the basket. Bostic and Peebles did more of that in the second half, but it's nowhere close to where it was a few games ago.

Even still, Gen had the huge three with the shot clock low in the final minute. Cook hit her free throws with 4 seconds. Peebles had 9 huge points. And KB did what she does with the wildly efficient 16 on 8-10 shooting, 13 rebs, 2 ast, 3 stl, 3 blks.

Good points. The rebounding this game though was an oddity. We actually lead the league in rebounding margin thanks, of course, to Bostic.

I’m not informed enough to know what they
normally do. (I haven’t seen enough of them this year) But, how many would you
say they send to the glass on defense? offense? Coaches have different preferences for total number they send of course. (Definite trade-off which ever way you go.

She’s an aggressive but still conservative minded coach. I bet she would ideally, like to send 3, maybe 4.

I dunno how it is ideally supposed to piece together when it really gets cookin’ with their break. I don’t know much of anything about their Phoenix Offense. Might be an execution thing. I dunno. I’m not second-guessing coach. I’m just a nerd and I’m curious.

Defensive rebounding is the fulcrum for what SG wants to do. At Dayton, they were a top-25 defensive rebounding team 6 years in a row. When we are at our best, yeah, 4 women are crashing the glass, while one is going for an outlet. The Phoenix offense is what the Suns did with Nash and D’Antoni (hence the name). 7 seconds or less. It's simply getting a good shot as quickly as possible. Grab the rebound and push the transition. If the layup is open, get it. If not, pass it back out to the open three-point shooters spaced along the perimeter.

Today, because we weren't getting rebounds, we weren't able to get out in transition and get easy points. Unlike a lot of teams in the conference, Northwestern isn't drastically bigger than us, so it's kind of surprising because like BRucks mentioned earlier, rebounding margin has been a strength. Honestly, a lot like the stagnant offense I complained about in our halfcourt set, I wonder if it's an issue of a long season taking its toll on a team with a short bench.

In a game where we were not shooting well and very off on our FT% you might say our D saved us. 21 points off turnovers. It often feels like we are one pass too
short on a lot of our possessions. Our guards try to weave their way into the lane with the shot clock winding down and we end up with crazy shot attempts. I felt early in the season the ball was going back out to open shooters for threes. So hats off for working hard on defense and creating turnovers. We took a couple hard shots to the chin from NW screens. Two important home games next. Looking forward to WBB Alumni weekend and the game against Sparty on BTN.
All road wins are good wins. Go Illini!

I appreciate your clear explanations of the offense and defense. Thank you.

Ok…I see what ya mean. Pretty simple.

Not that the more traditional breaks like for ex. the Carolina Break weren’t also simple…BUT this looks especially…”hey, let’s just get it and go” Pass Ahead Lay-Up/Dunk > Drive & Kick for 3 > Button hook, Drag Screen by the 5…

That looks like the main progression for thecore of the offense about 65% of the time, as run by Nash & Co…but Undoubtedly there are wrinkles I am not allowing for.

I like the sound of being a perennially impressive rebounding team. Noice!

Yeah, I have no doubt someone savvier could do a full breakdown, but that in no way is my strength. I have just listened to most of SG's press conferences, watched a decent amount of our games, and remember loving that Suns team back in the day.

Question. The start of the game was delayed because some of our players were wearing mismatched headbands. So, apparently, the headbands must be consistent across the team? How far does that rule go? Must socks match? Shoes? Leggings? Hair ribbons?

All players on a team have to wear the same color headband. It can be black, white, beige or the dominant color of the jersey. Same goes for wristbands, arm sleeves and compression shorts that reach beyond the hem of the uniform shorts. Shirts worn under the jersey must be the same color as the dominant color of the jersey. Braces and scrunchies can be any color.

It was raining heavily as we arrived. A young mom was in line in front of us with three little girls. As she passed through the metal detector the attendant called her out for a pair of binoculars (those small opera glass kind). Said that she could not enter with them and she'd have to take them back to her car. She asked if he could just set them aside and she'd pick them up on the way out. She didn't want to trek back out in the pouring rain with three little girls. She was denied. I attend athletic events at the university constantly. Never been told that binoculars were not allowed and use them regularly at Memorial Stadium, the Armory and Demirjian. Never tried at the Assembly Hall but I was surprised. Any clue why they are not allowed?
I think what we are talking about here is exercising a little common sensa... I'm leaving now...

I love me some Adalia and Makira, but like the men's team what they are going to do has become predictable.
Adalia McKenzie passed up 4 shots at 3 to drive into a packed lane and missed the layup on more than one occasion.
It's time to swing someone over to her side so she has a place to pass back to, kinda like slim Jake was always so good at.
Gotta add something they know we love the middle and our guards play big but are little.

Agree! Very aggravating to see them force a shot at the rim with 4 defenders aroungd them. Pass it out
