Notre Dame is not any easier of a job than Northwestern. Notre Dame isn't a basketball school and his vision helped renovate their arena. You think he's going to be able to outrecruit Duke, UNC, Miami(with their NIL money)? You think he can outcoach Tony Bennett? He's got a better chance of thriving in the B10 than in the ACC. What is so wrong with building a program for the long haul? Randy Bennett has done it at St. Marys, Mark Few at Gonzaga, Mike Brey at Notre Dame, Ed Cooley at Providence. None of these are the sexiest jobs in America but some coaches like to build a legacy rather than skipping town anytime the next best opportunity comes along
Saying NW isn't a harder job than ND is a silly sentiment.

ND has basketball tradition that NW completely lacks (9th all time in tourney appearances).
ND academics are great, but not as restrictive as NW.
ND athletic department revenue is 4x's NW, meaning better amenities, better assistant salaries & NIL potential.

These all make it a more appealing job. Particularly since it's pretty unlikely that NW's basketball success is sustainable.

Perhaps they have more tradition but you don't see too many of the top recruits wanting to go to Notre Dame. Sure, they've produced some NBA players like Troy Murphy or Jerian Grant or Pat Connaughton but with NIL, I think they can't compete with the blue bloods in that respect. I'm not saying it's a bad job but I would think Chris Collins would be very selective with the schools he would want to go to if he were to leave. To be honest, Porter Moser is a better candidate because he's actually had sustained success in the NCAA tournament and built up Loyola to be a perennial powerhouse for multiple consecutive years. This is Collins' 2nd good season in 10 or 11 yrs at Northwestern. So, he has more to prove as far as I'm concerned.

So question on whether ND is a better job than PSU. I agree PSU is along the worst jobs in the BIG but with the emergence of 2 super conferences and the massive TV money flowing to those conferences, are we trending towards a world where the worst BIG/SEC job is still better than any other conference due to the $$ differences?

It certainly seems to be trending that way for football. Just wondering if we get to a point where PSU can throw more money at its basketball program than a non blue blood non SEC/BIG school.

In the last 20 years NW has had 16 RSCI top 100 players, ND has had 68.

You don't win with 'top recruits' in either location. But you do get way more top 100, and the occasional top 50 Troy Murphy or Jerian Grant.

I think the ACC will continue to be a better basketball conference than the SEC (time will tell), and Brey has has some success since ND moved from the Big East. 2 EE appearances is nothing to sneeze at, and ND has tied for 2nd in the ACC twice since 2017. It's a far, far better job than PSU or Northwestern, with a far, far better legacy than either one of them.

How many top 100 has Illinois had in that time? 68 sounds like a lot, and more than I would expect from nd.

Does anyone else think that Chris Collins will use his team's success this year to upgrade to a "better" coaching job?

68 top 100 recruits in 20 years? At that rate, their entire rotation would have been top 100 players.

Their NCAA tournament resume for the last 20 years:
9 misses (+1 covid)
4 R64 exits (Seeds 6,6,7,7)
4 R32 exits (Seeds 2,5,5,11)
2 E8 exits (Seeds 3,6)

For comparison, our last 20 years, which start with the NC championship game and includes the dark years:
10 misses (+1 covid)
2 R64 exits (Seeds 5, 12)
5 R32 exits (Seeds 1, 4, 4, 7, 9)
1 S16 (Seed 5)
1 NC exit (Seed 1)

I had no idea ND was ninth all time in the dance appearances. Learn something new everyday. I probably should have paid more attention when Digger was pontificating.

But they’ve only made it to the Final Four once, and never to the championship game.

Not sure what your point is?

ND basketball & IL are comparable and both historically better than NW? Because..yes?

$$$. High profile College Coaches make a lot of it.
I don't understand your point here. Beard was winning &recruiting at a high level so it's not like they were looking for an excuse to get him out.

They presumably are going to sign another high cost/value coach and there's no guarantee that they still won't have to pay Beard something. So....?

I guess? It's his fiancee so she's entitled to nothing in terms of marital assets.

If we're assuming the worst possible intentions, which is super dark btw, she could conceivably sue for defamation if that was solely what she was interested in. This seems like a different situation.

Either way the point is that UT is untying itself from this messy situation and have plenty of quality applicants.

The ND basketball results were comparable to what we consider the dark times at IL. During this time their teams were made up (almost) entirely of top 100 recruits. To me that says the coaching staff at ND is significantly underperforming.

The "dark times" lasted almost 15 years, so at some point we are who we were...which was comparable and slightly inferior to other regional powers.

The original point was that ND isn't an upgrade over NW or PSU. I think NW it's pretty clear, PSU I think get's interesting but is still in ND's favor. Shrewsberry would be a helluva hire for them.

I think their point was just that those numbers (68 for Notre Dame and 16 for Northwestern) seemed dubious.

I looked up the RSCI lists beginning with the 2002 High School graduating class (Dee, Deron, and Augie's class) and ending with 2022. This includes only incoming Freshmen to each school and doesn't account for incoming transfers:

Notre Dame has had 17 freshmen ranked in the Top 100 in their respective classes, and Northwestern has had 4, so your point still stands that it's a lot easier to recruit Top 100 talent at ND than NW.

Just for fun, in that same time frame, Illinois has had 35 incoming freshmen that were ranked in the RSCI top 100.
