Coleman playing the 5 spaced the floor on offense. It brought Hunter out to the perimeter to create driving lanes.
Yeah, there ya go. I’ll buy that. (Except when Michigan switched to zone several times….so there wasn’t too much pulling him out to the perimeter at those points.)

I do think what you’re saying is probably pretty accurate but the inverse is also true. The unit he had in later, was very locked-in and were guarding ball screens better.

It’s pick your poison with Hunter.

I understand Dain sitting much of the late game situations here -- although I may have thrown him in for a minute or two for a different look/breather for CH -- but I found myself concern about his expression and body language on the bench.
Early in the game, Dain posted HD up and dominated and manhandled him with an easy layup; it reminded me of Kofi. Would love to see more of that from Dain, who definitely has the talent. Just apply the determination more often and good things will happen.

Rewatched and what a slugfest. Hunter had a huge game. Some random thoughts:

Hope Jayden is getting better
Love how Ty is progressing
Was so impressed with Coleman's defense. He passed up several 3s, which the team needs. Ok for him to take one or two, but I thought he was judicious.
Definitely some bad calls
RJ coming along.
Shannon with the 4-14 stat line and an insane 21 points. That's shows you he was in attack mode for over 40 minutes.
Really entertaining game by 2 tournament level teams. Michigan's gonna need to make some noise in the BTT to get in though.

- I've never had a love/hate relationship with a player like I have with Mayer. He makes plays and looks like an NBA prospect one minute, the next he starts playing hero ball and jacking up multiple contested 3's
Mayer is the best on team at creating his own shot. Jayden is problem be second.

My beef with Mayer is his horrible defense. He either is dropping off his man or trailing on cuts by a couple steps. Sometimes he gets a block but it is usually from behind. In order to pressure the ball you need all 5 defenders playing tough defense. Mayer unable to keep up with his man and Dainja in drop coverage stops us from playing great D all the time.

I love the Rodgers-TSJ-Sencir-Coleman- RJ lineup for pressure defense. Unfortunatly it is offensively challenged.

I hate seeing RJ just stand in the corner on offense. They need to get him involved - you don't have to shoot the ball everytime you touch it. He can set picks, run the baseline, crash the boards. His man just sags into the lane and helps on RJ drives and doubling Dane.

Tacomallini

Washington State
Kudos once again to Lieb – although he was a -2, but came in and held his own with Hunter at a time when the team needed a big to just play a solid 2 minutes.

I thought Conner Serven was a senior. Glad he’ll have a chance next year if he chooses to come back. It’s always tough to see a player end their career injured. Plus, he has the best NIL deal, as one of NCAA’s most rested players.

TSJ just absolutely willed the Illini through that first overtime. Both he and MM are players with flaws, but they showed up last night and died hard, like seniors should. Tip of the cap.

Illini Inquirer talked about CoHawk's possibility of coming back for next year, in yesterday’s postgame pod: https://247sports.com/podcast/illin...llinois-fighting-illini-athletics-podcast-22/
I was listening to it after the game but fell asleep, so I’m not sure exactly which minute it was at. Basically, Werner and Piper seemed to think CoHawk will test his feet with NBA teams for feedback, while the new ICON NIL collective will be prioritizing an enticing NIL $$$ package for him, to try and lure him back for another year.

Also thrilled about Ty’s play, CoHawk's 49 minutes, RJ having a solid game, Goode, attacking the rims, and catching such an EPIC Illini game!

Ayo may not be #1 but it only took him 3 steps from half court to the rim.

Absolutely. Dee didn't have the long stride of Shannon or Ayo but was just a blur. Talking in terms of dribbles needed rather than steps, Dee could go from half court to rim with only 2 dribbles. All 3 were/are fantastic at full speed.

I’ve been saying it all year … Ty Rodgers is going to be a PROBLEM in this league …

He gets a jumper … He’s unstoppable … Both ends of the floor .. Elite rebounder … Elite teammate …

I had an NBA scout text me tonight and said “If the Rodgers kid had a jump shot. He’d be a lottery guy for us. We think he’s that good in all other areas.”

He is the X Factor for this team going forward IMO …
I wonder if Ty will end up being our version of TJD. He was someone who year after year scouts said needed to develop an outside shot, but he never did. He just kept getting better and better on both ends of the floor though and is now a NPOTY candidate and back on most draft boards.

On one hand, Ty developing a jumper would make him essentially an All American talent, but obviously he would be leaving U of I sooner. It's harder to predict than someone like Ayo because Ty's shot needs A TON of work. So happy to see the contributor he has become though.

I will confess to not being a huge fan of CH. It’s not like I’m not a fan of his — I am — but between being too passive on offense, careless passes and jacking up some bad 3s, he more than tried my patience. But I think the last 6 to 8 games he’s really upped his game. He still does things that make me shake my head in a bad way, but he has become much more aggressive on offense and getting to the hoop.
Been calling for this type of play from CoHawk for two years....and now we are finally seeing it. But why not sooner? You are absolutely correct in that he must stop throwing passes to the Krush, stop shooting line drives from the arc (too many of which hit only the backboard...which should NEVER happen), and start taking shots in the paint with purpose and not thrown in the direction of the basket.

And now we are seeing all those things come being done...or attempted much more often. For this team to reach its potential, that has to happen. And it is!

The most befuddling aspect of this team's play for me is why things that hold this team back and produce poor performance have not been addressed and improved far sooner? The only answer I can come up with is time.

Free throws for instance. An hour with a coach who knows can improve the team % by maybe 15%...or more. And yet more than half of the rotational players shoot line drives with excessive movement in all directions other than the only one that is a must....vertical only...and after the eyes become stationery. Consistency in those two fundamentals would improve team FF% immediately.

But the bottom line is this team needs to hear some unconditional support from Illini fans just as much as some tough love. Most of the time they play like the Fighting Illini which is paramount to why we love to watch them play. We all certainly admire CoHawk, TSJ, and Mayer for what they can do, but they are still kids learning to use their skills and most of the time those are considerable. But also, we all would love to see them play with consistency and competence and perform closer to that line of perfection in both...knowing it will never be reached. Last night, the whole team performed closer in spite of some inefficiencies....at acceptable levels...but it was a team performance in which they should take great pride.

no offense, but I think far too much is made of a player's body language, expression, whether he's cheering as loud as the other guys or as much as we think he should be.

I’m really not trying to stir the pot on this.

But it’s awful funny what a victory and (I guess the perception of a better game plan) …will do for the psyche of this place.

We had another dude go off again and get 31 on us…and this board has said less about it than Harpo Marx. If that had gone the other way…I suspect we would of heard it this time too. Lol
