There's not really a guarantee that next year's team will be better. We are likely losing our three best players, and you never know with the Freshmen/Sophomores.

We cannot lose anymore of the Freshmen, those should all be 4-year Illini. If we were Purdue, I'd have no question about it. But we're Illinois, so it's always "someone" that leaves. If those 3 and Dainja comes back, I'm not too optimistic on Melendez but Brad has kept giving him chances to Start even after the team rules supension, so hopefully... and then Goode back. That's a good 6-man foundation with Number 55 and Number 121 Freshmen joining as well. But still questions of who is going to replace all the Production and no matter what it's right back to the Portal.

Rewatching the game. This was right before the dagger three from Funk that sealed the game for PSU. Clearly a complete defense breakdown. How could you leave Funk that open when he hit a three just a moment ago. Gotta give it to Shrewsberry, very well designed play and floor spacing.
You are a deranged person to rewatch the game.

Amen, pru.
If the team was as weak-minded as some of the posters, we wouldn't have come back to beat UCLA, or Texas or Northwestern. The game threads and post-game threads after a loss on "Illinois Loyalty" make the name of these forums an oxymoron. I can now look forward to the NCAA tourney, and if tradition holds, Illinois will lose its last game and I will be disappointed (as will the fans of about 352 other schools).

But hey. Things could always be worse. You could be a Michigan fan.

WOW , bingo !!!!!........very valid thoughts .........kudos to you .........

When i was a sales manager for "" apiece of the rock "", I did it for over ten years and i usually had a staff of around 100 peeps to manage on an average year......it didn't take me very long in the early years of my career to determine that out of those 100 ,peeps that 20 of them i didn't have to worry about .....they were mature , responsible employees who took their job seriously and performed to the best of their ability and almost all of them made over 100 K in new business commissions.....needless to say , as their career's blossomed , their income increased 10 fold b/c of the renewal residuals in addition to their new business.....

I also learned that around 20 of that 100 peeps i would have to fire b/c of poor work ethics and being to immature to realize the opportunity at hand........I laugh when i think of those peeps and wonder what became of them and their lot in life.......

I also realized the strength of my staff depended on the remaining 60 peeps and what i could do to help them and in the process help myself ....Not being greedy at all , it's just reality smack dab in front of you.........

Seems like here at good ole loyalty we have similar percentages that smack you right in the face........20 % that are mature enough to handle the ups and downs of a season of sports and the accompanying highs and lows related to games won and lost.......

you also have 20 % that are so negative that even if we would win a natty their response would be " what took us so long "......
The internal soul of a sports fan has to adopt a handling of the ups and downs that come with being a fan and cheering for your favorite team..........In baseball , if you hit .300 then you're a star......that also means you failed on 7 out of 10 times at bat.......

and so on and so on ...........................As for myself , i just can't be down on the Illini no matter what season we have in BB or FB.......
I'm not built that way.........glass half full is a tried and true way I reason how i want to live my life......

i would assume that the most vocal debbie downers are not happy with their life in total and put all their displeasure into rooting for a team to lose themselves in and forget the reality of their life as it really is .......I have sympathy for those folks who think posting crap aboot the Illini will make them feel better and really even feel bigger in their role in this life.....

sorry , but it doesn't work that way......i have to decide how far is too much and how far is not enough......it's a slippery slope that I have failed in life many times , but i have also learned from my mistakes and try not to make that said mistake again.....

Only you can change your life .....being an armchair analyst and bringing up all the bad in sports you cheer for should get old after a period of time.....at least it would for me.......

well , i'm just an old fart who talks to much sometimes , but lord god , why peeps post such hateful stuff is beyond me .........

it's time for my meds and some food , then maybe a snappy movie on HBO MAX or Prime Video for me ..........

see you all tomorrow and have a joyous evening everyone......

Well, we are what we are. The players (mostly) hustle and give it there all (much of the time). They are likeable (mostly) and I root for them totally. But as it has been said on this thread today both objectively and hatefully, Illinois is a good team with major flaws. All season all this board has said that the team lacks a true playmaking point guard (Skyy where are you?), starts games like zombies and are WAY BELOW AVERAGE at the three point line and the foul line. Weak lower tier performance for a Division 1 team.

Tonight's game? Same old flaws killing us. We played hard enough to keep it close for most of the game, but Penn State's "elite" All American took over the game at the end. And BTW, we got Funked big time. Looking forward to the NCAA Tourney we could, maybe I hope get to the second week, But the team has too many flaws to make a deep run. JMHO. Virtually every player including Mayer (really, check the video tape) made great defensive plays in the second half, but it wasn't enough. BTW we got Funked big time. I disagree with those saying that the refs were terrible or Coach Brad is terrible. Underwood is a good coach, but this team proved that they are frustratingly hard to coach (not very coachable), And oh yeah, Penn State's speedy and accurate passing was AMAZING all night. Good Night.

Are you serious? Right now it looks like we’ll be worse next year. We’re likely losing TSJ, MM and Hawk. While those three all have frustrating moments, they are nevertheless our three best players.

While I like both Rodgers and Harris, they just don’t give you much offense. Yes I know they may improve, but it would need to be pretty dramatic.

Big problems:

Luke Goode and RJ Melendez were supposed to be our shooters. Goode missed too much time and Melendez lost all confidence in his shot.

Coleman Hawkins and Terrence Shannon worry too much about showing off for NBA scouts than playing smart to win.

Gave the entire keys to the Point Guard position to an overrated Freshman that got cut by Kentucky, who ended up sucking and then quitting, no backup plan. Some of us (like yours truly) mentioned we really should go after a Mid-Major Point Guard transfer, but I guess we needed to keep a scholarship open for Zacharie Perrin to enroll mid-season.

Due to no Point Guard, doesn't matter when we play bad defensive teams, our offense isn't one that knows how to take advantage because we don't really have much of a set offense.

This is an NIT team that will probably get in due to a couple wins that look increasingly more and more like flukes, and an overall weak At-Large field, but at the same time they've done enough to give the Committee reason to snub them if it comes to it.
Sheesh! This is the finest use of 20/20 hindsight I've ever witnessed.

Not a loaded question.

Go back to last summer, knowing what you know now, and pick a trio to be on this team

Group a
Podz
Omar Payne
Jacob Grandison

Group B
TJ
Mayer
Skyy Clark

That said, we get a good draw and win a few in the tourney it changes everything.
… Group B. By a million.

We NEED to poll: Rebuild or Reload

I prefer to Rebuild.
That's essentially what this year was. It's why Underwood planned to rely on two freshman at PG instead of getting a vet. On that note, if we do get a "vet" in the transfer portal, doesn't have to be the starter. I'd be fine with a mid-major type to backup Epps who will have a year in the system under his belt.

There really is an option in between...which is what we will/should do: maintain some of the young talent and reloading with transfer pieces as a complement along with a talented recruiting class.

A rebuild in college would be along the lines of coaching change, and I want no part of that.

Nope.

Reload: get talent that (hopefully) provides immediate results. Use the portal and NIL to maximize the potential.

Rebuild: get talent with a focus on developing the talent and not on immediate results.

We tried the prior last year when we had the option of the latter. Nothing to do with a coaching change.

I thought the game turned after Shannons injury. After he twisted his ankle seemed like he got switched off of pinkett alot

The team should be much better next year with what is coming back. We just need to add some shooting. The lack of a consistent three point threat is killing this team. Goode can be that and he's shown more recently but we need more. Good news is shooting will be coming via the portal along with a veteran point
Pretty good big added also if the name I am hearing is true.
