There is no concern on my part who this team plays in any round. I just want them to play well on both ends. If that is not good enough...so be it. But I want them all to play well, enjoy it, and have some fun. They have played well lately, improving ball security some, getting CoHawk to understand how easy it is for him to carry the team if he just considers scoring in the paint, getting Ty and Harris to feel part of the team on both ends, getting RJ and Goode back to being RJ and Goode, and getting DD going early. Improve on all those a little and the Illini are tough for any team to beat, not Creighton, Mizzou, etc, etc, etc.
Hey Coach Underwood, what are you doing on here? You should be getting the team ready fir the tourny! Best of luck!

That's the spirit. Why not us?

The dream is still alive. If Penn St. wins tomorrow, it isn't out of the question that they could jump to a 7 or 8 seed, creating a possible 8-9 or 7-10 matchup with us.

Fool me once, fool me twice, fool me thrice... But not four times!

They wont put previous opponents together to meet in first round.

Sorry, but not possible (at least in the scenario you lay out). We would not be allowed to play them until the second weekend (Elite 8 given the selection rules, if I recall correctly). If you play conference foe one time during year, you can play in second round; play team twice.. S16, and 3 times Elite 8.

We could technically matchup with Purdue in second round.

The committee will do their best to avoid rematches in the first round, and even move a seed line if necessary. While I do think we will wind up being a 10 seed, if Mizzou is a 7, I think it's unlikely the committee makes that pairing when Arkansas, Creighton, Iowa State, Kentucky, St. Mary's, Miami, and FAU, who are all in that 6-8 range could be the matchup instead (As a side note, I think FAU is underseeded personally- No bad losses and winning record against Q1 with a 31-3 overall). Similarly they're not going to put us up against a B10 team in the 1st round.

My gut feel is we'll get Kentucky as there's a decent storyline and history there. However, if they wanted to do the underseeded midmajor 7 against the struggling power 5 10 seed, I could definitely see us getting Creighton or St. Mary's.

If you've got a time machine and already saw our first round game, feel free to use that sucker to go back and fix the season.

Just curious, what would your plan be if you could do this? Would you go back to this time last year and strongly encourage Underwood to recruit a point guard from the portal? Would you tell him to pass on Skyy and Perrin? What would your suggestion be regarding TSJ and MM? Honestly, I’m not sure I’d know where to begin.

But, while you’re handling all this, could you go back to 1989 and tell Nick Anderson to box out Sean Higgins just a little bit more?

Also to the poster who said we have had incredible luck this year, Kenpom has us as the 285th luckiest team in college basketball this year
I tend to like teams in the tournmanets who have gotten progressively stronger though-out the season.

Are we a stronger team now than when we beat TX and UCLA, or were just lucky those two games?

We haven’t been out of the first weekend in 18 years???? Is that right??? A high school senior has lived their entire life without us getting to the second weekend!!!! Man am I depressed right now.

Wow. That means if we make it this year, and i have to wait another 18 years for our next appearance, i will be 80 years old! That is a sobering thought.

Can someone explain why many on the board prefer a 10 seed for the Illini instead of an 8 or 9?

As a 10 seed, you play a 2 seed if you win your first matchup rather than a 1 seed if you were a 8/9 seed. Additionally, there isn’t much difference in skill level between a 7 vs. 8 seed team. However, this year the same can be said about a 1 vs. a 2 seed team.

We obviously are going to play a team very similar to us on paper in the first round

We should be able to beat Mizzery if we play anywhere close to our potential- we should beat any 7, 8 or 9 seed. It will mostly depend on us

Given how this season has gone it would be just like this team to go in a run in the tourny after a disappointing exit in the BTT- it’s been that kind of year

I don’t know about lucky, but I would be hard pressed to describe us as
stronger AS A TEAM.

I see growth among our freshman, but as A TEAM, not so much.

Big Ten 8/9 Games:

of the 'projected Bracketology on ESPN' - I do like the fact the Big10 has 3 opportunities to knock off a #1 seed in the second round (this will probably change by end of day)

its been a long year, but anxious to see the brackets as always

Let me help you reset expectations to avoid disappointment.

We have no point guard. We have no shooters. We are prone to prolonged scoring droughts. We tend to start games flat and put ourselves in an early hole. We turn the ball over at a high rate. We have several poor free throw shooters. We have no offensive rhythm or movement right now. Our defense is spotty. We often give up huge games to the other team’s top player. We can’t scheme to take advantage of our strengths or exploit another team’s weaknesses. And those are all our positive attributes.

I do like our future though. Our freshmen look good and have lots of upside. We have some good recruits incoming. Underwood has shown an ability to get what he wants in the portal, so maybe we’ll land a couple of shooters and a point guard. But for this year, prepare yourself for one and done. And life will go on.

Spot on evaluation. We can't run good sets cause we can't shoot. Too many guys can be played off of to clog driving and passing lanes. We need a high level ballhandler and a couple of good perimeter shooters. Those 2 things would solve a lot of problems.

I've watched a number of Creighton games this year. They may well beat Illinois, but I wouldn't hate the see the match up from what I've observed.
