Given the way his relationship with Fletch helped him get his body and his career pointed in the right direction, I'd be worried for Dain if he transferred, I feel like that would be a shaky decision for him.
Can he transfer without a waiver though? He transferred from Baylor to Illinois, doesn't that use up his one freebie?

How much of an impact did Luke’s injury have on this team and BU’s ability to instill the type of offensive continuity and on the court culture he wanted? Luke’s grit and understanding the importance of running the offense and his role would have been a nice option to have to sit players who weren’t playing within the flow of the offense.

I'm definitely encouraged by the growth of our freshman from this season. I'm also excited to see Dain next year because he showed some awesome footwork and skill this year. I was disappointed by the defense of guys that were upperclassmen and consistency, which was unexpected. The new guys coming in seem to track along with the freshman we had this year. Tough and gritty players. We need to add some shooters that can create their own shot and attack the rim too. We let teams off the hook far too often this year shooting 3"s.

When can we expect to start hearing news about who is leaving/joining the program?
The deadline to enter the Transfer Portal is May 11, 2023. Grad Transfers can enter later than that. The NBA Draft Early Entry Entrant Withdrawal Deadline is June 12th at 5 p.m. ET. So expect movement from now until then. For context, here were the key dates for Outgoing and Incoming Illini last year.

Andre Curbelo entered the Transfer Portal March 28, 2022; committed to St. John's April 15, 2022

Omar Payne entered the Transfer Portal April 2, 2022; committed to Jacksonville April 13, 2022

Skyy Clark committed to Illinois as a HS Recruit April 7, 2022

Brandin Podziemski entered the Transfer Portal April 12, 2022; committed to Santa Clara May 6, 2022

Kofi Cockburn declared for the NBA Draft, and was not eligible to withdraw due to being his third entry April 20, 2022

Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk entered the Transfer Portal April 27, 2022; committed to South Carolina May 11, 2022

Coleman Hawkins announced he "plans to come back" but left the door open April 27, 2022. The deadline to enter the portal came and went May 1, 2022

Terrence Shannon Jr. committed to Illinois April 29, 2022

Matthew Mayer committed to Illinois May 28, 2022

Jacob Grandison entered the Transfer Portal May 31, 2022 as a grad transfer after withdrawing from the NBA Draft May 29, 2022; committed to Duke June 11, 2022

He sat though, so was it a freebie?

He didn’t sit a whole year not sure how the timing works on that.
He was a mid-season transfer which is why he sat, technically under the old rules he wouldn't have been eligible until one year following the date he transferred, so he would have had to miss a few games. Those who recall Former Illini Savior (tongue-in-cheek there) Alex Legion who transferred from Kentucky, may remember his first game was the Illini's 11th of the year.

It would be especially shaky because he's used his one transfer with immediate eligibility. Transfer again and he has to sit a year, and he's already seen how he handled that with loss of conditioning and weight gain at Baylor.

Is it my imagination that pro and college teams have very different management structures? In pro you have advance scouts, pro scouts, international scouts, college scouts, gm's, and coaches. In college it seems like the coaches do everything, scouting, recruiting, and coaching, even though these roles all have different skill sets. If the pro's have these large staffs, couldn't a Big Ten or SEC team with large resources develop a more pro model? Hire multiple scouts good at scouting to scout, have assistant coaches whose expertise is coaching and strategy, and have a head coach/gm as recruiter/face of the franchise?
It seems like when a pro team tries the college model of coach/gm like chip kelly, urban meyer, or nick saban it flops, so wouldn't the pro organization be superior?

I'm no insider, but I happened to bump into someone today who is close to Dain. Asked if Dain is coming back next year and he said Dain and his dad are discussing that now. The look he gave me didn't inspire tons of confidence.
thanks for sharing...................the looks Dain was giving the last 5-6 games especially when spending a lot of time on the bench didn't look inspiring aboot coming back to me either.............But with dad being involved maybe he can counsel DD on all the options and maybe enhance the decision to come back to the Illini..................

I agree, Dain did not look thrilled to be on the bench a lot of the time. However, he still started every game down the stretch, and was playing during crunch time against Arkansas.

His dad could have interesting insight, he spent a year at San Diego State and then transferred to Minnesota where he spent four years playing for the Gophers. So I wonder how he would feel about Dain moving to his third school in four seasons. Dain getting into much better shape with Fletch is another interesting aspect into this decision.

There are certainly more variables for someone like Dain than someone like Podz or Adam Miller in recent years.

Based off what the transfer rules say, Danja has used his one time immediate transfer. He can’t transfer again unless he gets a waiver from the NCAA. I could be wrong though.

It’s a smaller flatter structure than the NBA, but there are more people involved than the average fan realizes.
