Assessing one's options at the end of each season and looking at every new season as a new project sounds to me like a coach who is well plugged into the reality of the current landscape and the current player.

You can't be mad at Underwood for staying abreast of the marketplace, that's ridiculous, that's not a standard anyone should be held to in any job.

Coaches – just like college players today – are Sole Proprietorships (if not proto-Corporations) looking for security and their best business opportunities. Expecting any human being not to always look out in their best interest is fundamentally unrealistic.

Fans hope to find players and coaches that are (at least) temporarily aligned with a mutual interest. Creating sort of a social contract between them beyond the legal one. But fans always look at this with their collective hearts while coaches look through other lenses. Often, everything BUT their heart.

Sometimes coaches ‘break’ that social contract when fans might think the coach is being disloyal or prematurely looking to exit. But fan bases also break that social contact when they call for a coach’s head or otherwise try to usher him out the door before his legal contract would provide. Or when the coach is being unfairly blamed for a team's struggles.

In short... egos and motives clashing. Always an ongoing conflict. Coaches have their egos... and fan bases collectively have theirs. And when (likeable) coaches start to look around, the fan ego gets a beating.

In a perfect world, a coach would truly love a Program (for whatever reason) and a given legacy and a fan base and makes that their priority over ‘everything else’. Some places and people over the years have had a hint of that. But that’s certainly never going to be the general business model in the era of super big media dollars... big coaching contracts... ongoing poaching of coaches and players... and increasingly restless fan bases who all want IT NOW.

It does make the Offseason at times as interesting as the season on the court.

Chester could potentially be a candidate for the job
Why is that cause for concern? If we want to be a big time basketball program, that usually means we produce assistant coaches that are desirable for head coaching positions. As far as I'm concerned, that's us moving up in the world.

I hope he gets it, succeeds, and makes a name for himself.

Oh, Whitman is aware … Brad and his agent go poking around at jobs every year … Last year it was K State (which Whitman understood) and then we gave Brad the bag and now he wants to go flirt with Texas ? In Whitman’s head - he’s given Brad everything he could want … If he’s not happy still then so be it, thanks for everything and good luck wherever you go …
Okay, didn't figure to wake up to 20+ pages of BU coaching speculation. (Still have about 12 to go lol.)

One question: If Brad is 'flirting' with other schools, how short of a leash does he have? Seems to me that another first/second round loss might push Josh to change coaches. I can see staying with someone through rough tournament records when they are totally bought in, but to someone who is looking? One thing for sure, I'm not offering more.

Wait a minute....you're telling me that Larry Brown and Jerry Colangelo were in Mahomet Illinois for lunch today??? WTH....Monicals...Jimmy Johns...or DQ???
I guess people gotta eat but that’s surprising and incredibly random. Lol

DQ had a 🔥
Don’t Forget Arby’s, The Hen House, A Mexican restaurant that escapes me, a Chinese place, and new pizza place that went in where El Toro was

I would have gone with Project 47.

His agent might have burned up the end of the rope already with all this job searching he’s been doing

Does anyone else get the impression that the NLs may actually be sports teams and not actually Ls?

No reason for concern. This is simply the beginning of many dominos to fall

Now imagine if BU was zooming portal players during the tournament to his new coaching destination like allegedly Ed Cooley did with the Lampkin transfer to Georgetown. That would really cause some panic around here....

Every year of his career, my husband has entertained headhunters to see if he can find a better gig. If he finds a better offer, he decides if it's worth asking his boss for a counter offer,
Telling your current employer that you have a better offer and therefore need a raise to stay is usually a sure way to get canned as soon as your current employer has found a suitable replacement for you.

So no more searching and stick to the program he already has? Or are we already at a point of no return? It's hard to read all the different tea leaves.
Well we aren’t gonna fire him. But I don’t think Josh is going to try and keep him if he has a deal in place at another school if that makes sense. Josh has money ready to go for the replacement and it’s more than Brad makes now soooo

That's not a problem if you actually had another offer. And if your employer won't pay you what you're worth and someone else will, why would you want to stay?

No one, including me, likely cares what I think.

But.
1. I would choose Miller over Underwood every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
2. I think Underwood should absolutely be looking to maximize his position at every point.
3. If this is much ado about nothing and Underwood stays, totally cool. But I need a S16 man!
4. I understand that if the constant job feelers from Underwood gets old for JW over time
5. Weird parallel with Self doing the exact same thing under Guenther, and Underwood doing it with his padawan JW. Arkansas involved each time too!
6. I have much more confidence that if JW said "fine, go" vs yet another raise/extension he would have plan and vs Guenther being... well, Guenther and not really even once trying to keep Self here.

I agree…more often than not.

Unless we’re talking about some seriously in-demand specialized skills.

And, in this case….a D1 coach with a killer resume…that wins in March. It’s a fairly small pool. There’s a lot of good ones out there off the radar tho.
