Underwood reminds me a little of Coach Eric Taylor from the Friday NIght Lights series.

Coach Taylor won himself some of those nice Big Trophies. Let's hope that also rubs off on the Illini.

And Coach Taylor was known to yell at his players sometimes (Oh, the Horror!). But his players always knew he had their back. Well, most of them.

And truth be told, he had a guy leave on him a time or two. But as the old saying goes... 'Sometimes Elimination is as necessary to The Body as Assimilation'.

The possibility of Coleman and TJ coming back are higher than they have ever been. TJs mom might’ve prematurely leaked some stuff as well. Not saying it’s a done deal or will happen but $ talks. Brads A ok if the only guys who return are Goode, Ty, RJ along with Coleman and TJ and the incoming freshman

Tells me that Brad was hoping to keep RJ. Replacing his production in the portal will be easy. I think he is a real loss from a chemistry perspective though. One of our few remaining pieces from the BIG championship team. A real blow to the everyday guys. Sorry to see him go.

The opinion is not an opinion. Eventually they will both go if healthy. Whether or not it is now or later remains to be seen. I hope they come back just like you do. I have been a fan much longer than you have and DO have a right to my own opinion.
Doesn't this statement go along with every single player that enters our program? Whether its the NBA, Overseas or what have you, at some point, every player leaves.....

RJ canceled nil deals. he's gone.

RJ Meléndez is the latest Illini iteration of Curbelo... a guy who flashed occasional brilliance on the court but whose overall game somehow ran off the rails after a promising start and has not yet fulfilled a potential great promise.

But we still wish them well and thank them for wearing the Orange colors for a time.

How much of his struggles this year were due to his shoulder injury? I fully expect him to shoot 40% from 3 somewhere else next year. Oh well, next man up.

[EDIT: Oh, my. That will teach me not to read an entire thread before responding. And me, a GIF aficionado, completely missing the boat. OK... my post below can be recaptured in the following GIF:]

I saw them in August '07 when they took a spin through Canada and I was living in Ottawa. (Is that a foreign country?! Yes. Yes, indeed it is! Seven years in Canada teaches a man to hate :ROFLMAO:)

They played the reigning Canadian National Champions, Carleton University, and won in overtime. It was helpful, if depressing, to see that game and realize that the ensuing season would be a long one. I was so desperate for hope that I actually thought there was a chance that Steve Holdren (whom I believe was the leading scorer that evening) would be dropping daggers on the BT from the perimeter all season long!

Pretty cool to see the team in a gym that seated fewer than 1k, however, sit a dozen rows behind the bench, and chat with boosters afterward. (One told me that Jamar Smith, who was still suspended during that summer, was shooting the ball like no one he had ever seen. Alas, I don't believe Jamar ever stepped on the court for the Illini again.)

The Canadians also mercilessly heckled Jeff Jordan.

Go to Spain to see the team if they go this summer. You won't regret it.

People all have their players that they don't want to leave. Probably weighing 2 games too heavily, but RJ is that guy for me. Looking at those S16 type tournament teams, they all have 2-3 long lean guys who move like RJ. Perhaps not coincidentally, RJ has also played well in both tournament games he has played. The long lean athletic types are where basketball is going for the 2-4. Hurts to lose one.

I officially hate the transfer portal and what it has made college athletics. I realize it doesn't matter because it is here to stay (as is NIL). But, I hate them both.
The transfer portal has gotten out of hand, though I still do believe in a few more years it will settle down a bit as players realize that the grass isn't always greener and a certain number of transfers get hosed.

Student-athletes retaining their NIL rights, on the other hand, is a good thing. There is absolutely no reason that someone should not retain the rights to their own name, image, and likeness just because they happen to be a student athlete. Any other student not governed by the NCAA is not subject to those restrictions (e.g., cheerleaders monetizing their social media). How the NIL system is implemented, on the other hand, needs some work, as it's the Wild West right now. But again, I think that ecosystem will mature over the next few years as well.

I've got to say I am really starting to worry about all these transfers out. Michigan St, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Purdue still all have none according to the Sports Illustrated portal tracker. Only Minnesota and Penn St have more than us if RJ does leave.
All that means is that players from other B1G schools haven't entered the portal yet. It's way too early to compare numbers and/or to claim a dumpster is burning. Time will tell.

Doesn't matter if RJ finds the best possible fit team for him, whether it's us or someone else. Bottom line is he's gotta improve his handles. That's the main thing that's been limiting him basketball-wise.

Not sure anyone knows what RJ is going to do including RJ. So no he's not staying nor is he gone yet. Time will tell
If RJ is being recruited over I won't blame him for leaving. Last year he showed he is not a good at catch and shoot 3s which limited his effectiveness and resulted in chemistry issues when he was on the floor with TSJ, CoHawk and Ty. If those 3 are core players next year there are more issues ahead for RJ. However I think Amani and Dra would be better fits for RJ's game so i hope he stays and gets court time with them.

If you enjoy parity and every team having a chance....NIL and the transfer portal is for you. The traditional powers are going to have to rethink high school recruiting. No longer does the team with a huge recruiting class tower over the field. It's the team that's got 3 seniors and 2 juniors starting that does.
