Is he? Let's look at Fr stats:

Tyger - 30 mpg, 8.3 ppg, 5.0 apg, 2.4 rpg, 0.8 spg, 35.8% FG, 26.7% 3pt, 67.4% FT

Boswell - 15 mpg, 4.6 ppg, 1.6 apg, 1.6 rpg, 0.7 spg, 45% FG, 39% 3pt, 79% FT

Now granted Tyger improved his shooting a fair amount to where he's up to 40% FG, 33% 3pt, 79% FT for his career, but that's also my point with Boswell. Do we not expect Boswell to improve over time? His shooting as a Fr is much better than Campbell's, he's also physically bigger. To me it is clear Boswell has the higher ceiling.

If you doubled Boswell's minutes per game to match the PT Campbell got as a Fr, and just assumed Boswell's stats would double, Boswell would be better in every category except assists. One thing we know for sure, Campbell will be of 0 help in the 2024-25, or 25-26 seasons. Maybe Boswell would be in the NBA by then, but I still think the better choice is the guy that gives you more years. Especially considering we don't appear to have any big time PGs we're in good with in the 2024 class. Probably because we didn't think we'd need one. But that is just one more reason why a transfer with 3 years eligibility is better than one with 1.
Are we really comparing the stats of someone who has now played 3 more years since the stat line you gave? Tyger is without a doubt one of the best pure 1's, not just in the portal (well not yet), but in college basketball. One of our biggest problems this year was a lack of ability to start and run the offense because we didn't have someone capable of doing it.

Sure, boswell would be better for years ahead, but as we know rosters look very different for every team, every year. We may be lucky enough to have Coleman and TSJ for one more year, add in a pure PG like Tyger who is proven to be able to run an offense and our team immediately becomes much better than our team this year.

Caleb Love update: Down to 2 schools currently---Missouri or Michigan(both ewww)
Ryan Nembhard: possibly Arizona. Leaving Creighton b/c his family has concerns that Nembhard won't get to the NBA in Creighton's system.
LJ Cryer: Kansas St. and Houston seem to be the top 2 for now
Tramon Mark: down to Kansas St, Arkansas, Florida, and Texas A&M
Hunter Dickinson: Zoom meetings with Kentucky and Arkansas

Doesn't look like Cryer will be coming here

I wished he could have stayed and played, but I think Underwear had him slotted as a mop up time guy. He would’ve had a hard time getting playing time. He is a rare example of a good use of the transfer portal.
No, he would not have had issues in getting PT if we did not play Williams almost 30 minutes a game, Grandison 26 and Trent 34. We were a wore out banged up team because we only played 7 guys double digit minutes while only giving Goode, RJ and Podz 8, 8 and 5 respectively.

I watched most of the SIU - Cal Baptist game (full game is on Youtube:
). Some thoughts on Domask:
- You don't watch him and think "length"; almost feels like he's only 6'4". However, that could just be because he plays with a low center of gravity. Kid has ankles like a fullback. And the analyst (I think it was Tim Doyle ) noted that he stood next to Domask and believes he is every bit of 6'6". I remember when his coach Brian Mullins played in the tournament back in the late 2000s, Jay Bilas quipped that "SIU gets off the bus and you think your'e seeing the wrestling team, not the basketball team." I'm guessing coach has brought similar sensibilities into their current strength program.
- Not an above the rim explosive athlete, but again like a football player, has a good standing vert. Dunks one two-handed off a half-step with ease in the first half (as any 6'6" player should, but it was a bit of a surprise considering his otherwise lack of twitchiness). In combo with being tough to move, I think he can rebound at the high-major level.
- Lets the game come to him offensively. Despite those numbers, he really doesn't force much action. His volume is not as dense as some other high-usage guys. He doesn't come off the floor - over 35 mpg for his career is bananas. Also makes smart decisions with his movement - keeps defenders in spots where they can't cover two off-ball players at once.
- Defensively, his highlights are not going to feature a blocked layup on a player who has beaten him on the dribble, nor is he jumping a passing lane for a dunk. When off ball, he is acutely aware of where his man is. Impressive mental and physical stamina to not take a play off.

Mental toughness begets mental toughness. He could get 8/5/2 and he'd make our team better.

Let's go ahead and say none of those listed will be Illini. I'm interested in our insiders' thoughts on these players, though:

RayJ Dennis (highly doubtful)
Justin Harmon
Dalton Knecht (highly doubtful--maybe Indiana? Yuck)
Tristan da Silva
Kadin Shedrick (Hoosier-bound, also?)
Kalib Boone
Javian McCollum

Let's just start there. ;)

Yeah, think peeps look at highlights and see some unathletic dude that can shoot in a step down program. However, if you watch the games, you see a guy that can shoot, pass, rebound, solid team defender, high IQ, and can post some. I see a little bit of Tyler Wahl to his game with better shooting but not as much post and a little bit of Joey Hauser to his game, but better passer. The dude is a very good player and would be a great add.
I agree, has a bit of Hauser in him as his BBIQ is high. Doesn’t make mistakes on the court and he can get to the line.

It better be. Throwing together a free agent team every year has never worked no matter how great the talent is.

The best teams this year - Houston, Purdue, Alabama, Kansas, UConn, FAU, Miami, San Diego State are all well built programs with continuity.
During the NCAA tournament I thought it was said that 19 of the 40 starters in the elite 8 were transfers.

Yeah he's only listed at 6'3 on his 247 recruiting page. Would not be surprised if he's 6'4 without shoes.

Good post!! The game I saw him play vs SLU, I was shooting the game on floor level, the dude was not afraid to take it right at Francis Okoro.

I’ll trust the staff on whatever they do with Tyger Vs Boswell if that becomes a possibility. The Domask dude is interesting. I think I’ve become more married to my theory on the portal tho

1. Multi year transfers who were semi successful or better from power 5s are the best option. They are talented if they’re p5 guys to start, they’ve proven a little bit if they were semi successful or better, they can’t transfer again (atm) so they’re gonna have to buy in to your culture. Probably the new version of the incoming freshman.

2. Multi year transfers who were very successful at the mid major level, for the same reasons as 1.

3. One year rentals from mid majors have something to prove, and are better than one year rentals from high majors looking for a pay day or to improve draft stock. They absolutely have to look out for themselves, I’d just prefer they don’t do it with us (unless the staff knows they got the guy locked in for sure, which again, trust them).

Caleb Love to Michigan btw. Anyway..where were we

Wow … Took less to go there …

Hope he enjoys never beating Illinois … 😂

Side note … But for all the people who are messaging me saying I don’t know what I’m talking about and my info is bad … If you wanna call me out on the board it’s okay, I can handle the criticism … I’m sorry that my info on the 1300 kids in the portal and where they’re going isn’t 1000% accurate since they’re 18-21 year old kids that change their mind every other hour and I don’t have the time to sit here and update you guys on it … But be my guest at keeping track of all this stuff and talking to hundreds of people every day … Me, and others on here such as @illini0440 & @DB11Headband & @LvilleILL and many others that know who they are give you guys info for free … We aren’t getting paid to be here … So please just enjoy the info as we get it instead of being critical for the few things we do miss … Thanks!

I mean we're really digging into the analysis on 2 guys, neither currently in the transfer portal, but what I'm saying is you get 1 year with Campbell. You want your PG to be a master of your system. We know Campbell won't be a master on day 1. How long does it take to get there? Can you do it in 1 season? I certainly give a 5th year guy with Campbell's resume a better chance than most anyone else to do that in 1 season. But we are just coming off a season of seeing a 5th year struggle with the system (possibly by choice).

So when we look at the stats to see is Tyger really on a different level than Boswell, my answer is in terms of shooting, definitely not. Boswell was a significantly better shooter as a Fr than Campbell was as a Sr (except FTs). In fact, if you look at only the last 21 games where Boswell was getting more consistent minutes his FG% went up to 49% and 3 pt% went up to 45%.

So all taken into account, for 1 season Tyger will certainly bring the better intangibles. He's led teams to a conference title, been to a Final 4, been there done that. However, if he comes in next year and we end up 3rd in conference to Michigan State and Purdue and make the Sweet 16, was that worth it? Do you have to bring home some hardware to make a 1 year player the right choice? To me yes, otherwise I'd prefer a guy you can develop so that they can help bring you that hardware in the future. Others may say, no I'd rather have the best team possible every year and more experienced players make the best team. That's fine, no rule that everyone has to think the same.

Don’t worry about what a few ignorant people are saying to you, Indy…. the rest of us all really appreciate what you and the other insiders do for this forum. I just don’t get why some people can’t be more appreciative of you guys…. because like you said, you definitely don’t have to do what you do……

First of all I did not even know you could message people individually on this forum. Someone needs to show me how to do that or I need to have my 16 year old daughter take a look at it and figure it out in about 5 seconds.

Second, why in the world is anyone actually messaging you to complain? Why are they on this forum to begin with? If you are an actual fan of the Illini, you should be completely grateful for people like Indy, LvilleILL, illini0440 and DB11Headband. They are the reason you come to this forum. For intel on your team.

Please stop messaging them complaining. Please leave the forum. I personally don't want to lose any of them. They are the main reason I waste 30 minutes to an hour every day on this forum.
