I’m predicting this is our squad for next year:

PG- DGL
SG- Domask
SF- Goode
PF- Hawkins
C- Dainja

Bench- Rodgers, Hansberry, Harmon, Moretti, Harris

A lot depends on DGL being able to play a minutes right away. Even if you get a low to mid major PG or JUCO to come in I don’t see the ceiling being raised much. Gonna need Goode/Domask to each shoot 37+% from 3, Dainja to be a consistent low post scorer, Hawkins to be a rim protector. Harris to be a lock down defender. Rodgers to improve all facets. A collection of role players coming together to be greater than the sum of their parts which was the opposite of this past year.

I think we will struggle athletically playing Goode/Dainja/Domask together. Hawkins will need to cover up ALOT which he’s capable of if his mind is to it.
The hype on dgl is amazing… with the importance Underwood places on defense I don’t see him playing much, let alone starting…

He may not redshirt but if he’s playing major minutes and handling ballhandling duties this year, we have some major problems.

No one’s trying to push the kid away, but he needs some time to develop and work with Fletch, just like Moretti does. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Also, we need to worry about winning, not whether we are going to run kids off if they don’t play. Coaches can’t coach that way. The portal era gives kids the opportunity to move, but with these kids that need to develop they are going to have to start getting realistic about their ability level and the opportunity to develop or that they can easily be replaced by someone from the portal who’s already developed and ready to play. It just is what it is. It’s ok to sit a year and develop.

DGL put up impressive numbers at OTE playing against high major players and future NBA picks. He has a gear that can push the pace.

I think he’s the best option at this point given what is out there. If all your eggs are in the “RayJ Dennis will pull out of the draft and attend his 3rd college in 5 years” basket I don’t think that’s realistic. If its “bring in ANY veteran mid major or low major PG” say a Lance Jones caliber for instance- don’t think that has much upside either.

Painter saw enough in him to think he could play. He could be a surprise like Braden Smith was.

Upset that we won’t get Tyger but still plenty more available guards

With the way Brad/some coaches operate, some freshmen will be more motivated to transfer. However:
1. They are probably going to transfer anyway.
2. You are in a disadvantage if you don't fill some spots with transfers.

So unfortunately, screw the HS recruits, we do need them to at least temporarily fill out the roster though. (They are probably cheaper, too.) /s

I like the spirit of what you're saying.

My problem is that DGL is a combo scorer. So is Justin Harmon incidentally.

We absolutely have to have a true PG, and experience there is helpful.

There's at least 2 more guys if not more coming. If Shannon is gone, we will be adding 3 more transfers. 0 chance DGL starts next year, and Goode/Domask will be guys who come off the bench and play 15-20 minutes

This helps our decision making in a way, if true.
people, entering the draft does not mean much. Tyger will not get drafted.

He enters his name, he goes through the steps. That allows him to get direct feedback from the NBA on what he needs to work on. He gets to go through workouts with the best players and top notch coaches. This is simply doing his due diligence as a player. If he were to say I'm going to Europe, that's when he's off the board. Pursuing the NBA when you won't be getting guaranteed money is really a nothing.

Yes, this to an extent. You still need them and there are still going to be some guys that come in and contribute right away, but there will be a balance.

The damn-the-torpedoes approach to burying all the players with remaining eligibility on the bench is shortsighted, I think.

Shannon and Hawkins offer continuity and leadership for that group, they are entitled to those spots. If they leave, I don't think one-and-done ball-heavy mercenaries are the right replacement options.

He may play in the G League or go the undrafted rout. Look how much money Fred VanVleet makes. The issue with Tyger or anyone in his age is hardly anyone wants to play a 6th year of college when they could be playing pro ball anywhere

I guess we will see. I never said anything about “bring in ANY veteran mid major or low major PG” at though. It seems like you’re a professional scout though so I should probably just listen to you. It’s not like the insiders on here who have access to the program have already said what I’m saying.

I don't know what you are smoking if you think that young man is going to come to Illinois to not play this year!!!

Smoking straight facts … He’s gonna play less than Buck did this year …

Kid is talented but he needs Fletched… The easiest way to ride the pine is not being able to defend … And that’s not exactly a strength of his …

We don’t need him to score … We’ve got proven scorers … So if he can’t defend … Can’t create for others yet … Isn’t strong enough to guard bigger guys … Where do you expect Brad to put him ?

Now the kid is talented and will he be a piece for the future ? Yes - if he stays … But is he ready now ? Absolutely not … And if you told Hawkins and TJ that DGL was the starting PG next year … There’s a 0% chance they come back …

Tyger is nowhere on draft boards passing up a big NIL deal would be pretty crazy to do IMO

He’s not an idiot … He’s gonna tell everyone he’s all in on the off chance it may help him get better feedback from teams thinking he’s really, really considering it … Then he’ll realize he can make way more in CBB than in Spain B League and announce he’s returning to school and entering the portal …

I'd say that there is no way he won't be back if he is told that he won't be drafted, unless he just wants to play pro ball and doesn't care where. Now he can be paid like a pro in college, so why leave?
I would think joining a team that's willing to pay you handsomely in NIL and happen to be playing in Spain this summer to showcase your skills to international scouts might benefit someone not on any draft boards.
