Please also incorporate the "counter-steering" feedback mechanism in your modeling and explanation so this trip down memory lane from my controls class in the M.E.B. 36 years ago this semester will be complete.

Oh, and please deploy the term "dashpot" in the process.
Well I did say that donors' desire to not burn money acted as damping, i.e., the dashpot.

Presumably if I could reasonably model this as a dynamical system I would likely be paid a lot more for my services by Wall Street.

Schools can reduce transfers by altering the terms of the NIL agreements. For a freshman, it could look like: We will pay you X/year in NIL. There is an additional 4X bonus if you graduate from UIUC. (i.e. 50% of the pay is for staying)

If nothing else, it would take a bunch of the sting out of transfers. The question is whether the students would accept the contracts, or take lower value contracts elsewhere that pay more up front.
Not true. Schools absolutely CANNOT be involved in the setting up, instigating, or follow through of a deal. However, in January the NCAA came out and basically said, if a collective that gives money to your athletes does something wrong, the school is “guilty until proven innocent.”

Therefore, a lot of school are involved in the information loop, and can voice objections to deals, but at the end of the day, can’t stop it. But, that gives them the option to say “we objected to this deal.”

Come to think of it, the Portal Times do feel a bit like a couple of crazy guys in trench coats grabbing Dan Rather and pulling him into an alley to interrogate him.

(And I'm chuckling to myself wondering how many young'uns in the thread have any idea what we're talking about. Google is, in this case if not not others, our friend.)
Yes…to all of that. What a bizarre event that was.

Total Random Tangent: speaking of REM…Why doesn’t the Orange Krush use their tune Orange Crush? Seems like a no brainer to me. Micheal Stipe lived in Collinsville in HS years. I feel like he would likely give his blessing…I 🤷‍♂️ just a thought…

I'm immediately reminded of the scene in Margin Call in which Demi Moore's character is interrogating Peter Sullivan regarding his graduate work in propellant combustion ("So, you're a 'rocket scientist'"). I'm in need of a GIF but at the office, however, and bereft of same.

Like other jangle pop tunes, Orange Crush isn't much of a banger.

If we are now using the language of dynamical systems...

I agree, and I think the situation we find ourselves in now is one where we've overshot the more stable equilibrium and will see the system move back toward something more sustainable.

I think of it like a mass-spring-damper system. Previously it was held in an unstable position with the spring stretched by NCAA rules. When the NIL dam broke, it moved toward a more stable situation but overshot. Donors' wishes to not dump money down the drain will act as damping and cause.the system to tend toward a more stable equilibrium, but it's going to take some time.

(Sorry, I'm about to go teach a class that involves mass-spring-damper systems.)

🤓
Nice analogy. I'd also add that NIL and the transfer rules currently in effect are actually "free rolling" on the scale, causing wild swings away fro the desired equilibrium. If the NCAA can stabilize one of them, there is much more likely a possibility of some sort of equilibrium.

One too many. Another wing would be a replacement for TSJ if he stays in the draft.

And there might be more PG targets than just Tyger and RayJ

(Jalen Cone! Can we get a Jalen Cone going in the chat?)

Non athlete students can transfer whenever they want, yes? If that's the case, NCAA will have no grounds to restrict transfers of athletes. That's what kicked the NIL door wide open.
If a non-athlete on scholarship wants to transfer, they are certainly free to do so, but have to find a way to continue to pay for college, as the gaining university is not likely to offer a scholarship for academics.

Student athletes are not restricted from transferring to another university. They can change every semester if they wish. However, they can't transfer to play basketball (or football, or any scholarship sport).

ON EDIT: I se that nichi beat me to this . . .

This is 100% where it needs to head IMHO. However, that still doesn't take away the fact that it's no longer about the name on your jersey and more about the car you are driving and the parties you are going to. Wondering what alumni reunions will look like in the future as well. Will players have the emotional ties to a school anymore like many of our legends (dwill, dee, ayo, etc)
I think the problem with that concept is that schools don't control NIL, they don't issue the contracts between the private entity and the student.

I guarantee that everyone is on the same page from the admin to the coaches and those actually dishing out NIL. Bad deals are bad for the brand, and everyone understands there is only so much to go around and you need to maximize how far it stretches. No one gets a NIL deal without school approval.

Fair. It isn’t Maiden or Motörhead. But it’s less jingle-jangle 80s college rock than most of their catalog. I mean…It rocks harder than Neil Diamond or some of the other tunes you’ve hear to death at games for 50 years.
(Yes, I like Sweet Caroline. I’m not a heartless monster.)

Anyways…I get what you’re saying. Orange Crush isn’t the perfect stadium rocker…and I’m not a super big REM fan by any means. But it’s sorta cinematic in a way, it builds, and it has a fairly catchy chorus with Orange Krush in the title. 🤷‍♂️

Okay…I’m way too tangential on this one…Sorry everybody.

I love the song, I just think it's just lyrically dark AF for a student section song...which is unfortunate because otherwise 🤷‍♂️

You would be wrong.

The University has nothing to do with NIL$. The legit part of NIL$'s still comes out of DIA of course, The bigger portion of NIL$ still comes out of the bag drop and very very few people know that trail. Keep in mind that the Wild Wild West has gotten enormous. Where this all ends is anybody's guess. But it's safe to say that the days of the amateur student athlete are long gone. Go Illini

When you lay it out there like that.....it's depressing. Nothing can be promised at this point.

Gotta hand it to Louisville raking in over $7 million in profit per win!!
Lol. In all seriousness, I have always had a sort of soft spot for Louisville. They're second fiddle in a small state, and their incredibly impressive history/tradition will always have to live in the shadow of the greatest program of all-time in Kentucky. For them to be as good as they have been historically and have such incredible fan support is impressive.

Ah, but Sweet Caroline is infinitely shoutable by the entire stadium, so it earns bonus points for that.
