Reeves averaged 1 assist last year. If that’s the starting PG next year, that’s not ideal. It’s still a really talented team, but still no true PG unless DGL surprises us. Reeves is a good 3 point shooter though.
Tough for me to understand this recruiting. More like Groce unbalanced recruiting. Like bringing a knife to a gunfight even though it is a bright shiny sharp one.

You know, we’re all operating under the premise that, to add one more player, as has been suggested, one must go. But that’s not necessarily the case.

Now I am in no way suggesting this is in the works or that it would even be considered, but what’s to stop an NIL partner from offering, say, Coleman Hawkins $500k, PLUS cover his tuition, books, boarding, etc, thus freeing up a scholarship? At some point, some school will test this premise. Might as well be Illinois.

Knowing nothing about running a D1 program, I’m curious how IL staff would’ve vetted Williams’ health situation and readiness to play. I think (?) we would’ve read about it here if he was on campus for workouts/visits. Would staff go and have him workout wherever he resides before signing? Serious, knowledgeable answers appreciated. Smart aleck responses expected. And appreciated, if funny.

Unbalanced or undertalented? Getting too many wings was a problem. Getting wings that couldn't dribble and shoot was a bigger problem.

I could be wrong but I believe Arkansas has been openly doing just that this off-season and I don’t think anyone has tried to stop them

How about we stop giving scholarships to players that have no business ever seeing the floor? I don’t think the number of scholarships will ever keep us from recruiting but I don’t see the benefit of adding some of these obscure European kids when there’s always a chance of getting a mid year recruit these days.

Honestly (I’m supposed to say that right?), was this the outcome I was looking for? No, but I wasn’t sold on RayJ either. Guy was playing at Toledo, you can’t tell me there wouldn’t be questions with him also.

All the self-proclaimed experts on here can worry about not having a PG, but at the end of the day, while the staff isn’t infallible, they have more expertise than you. If they think Williams can fill the PG role, then I’m going to trust them until the season starts and I can see.

None of us know how this will work out. I’d guess a lot of throught Skyy was going to be amazing and didn’t expect a lot from Andre Felix. I’m sure I’ll get roasted for this post, but I don’t see the point of freaking out and making judgements before we’ve seen how it will work out.

We all know the PG position was a disaster for us last year. If the roster stays as is, do people feel more confident about our PG play next year than they did going into last year? I think people were excited about Clark and Epps as PGs more than they are excited about what is going on now and that scares me.

He's very likely going to get it. Did not step on the floor last year
I understand the argument.

But two things:

1. It's the NCAA and we're Illinois

2. Nobody is blind to the reality that Williams went to ISU for cash and is now coming to UI for more cash, exactly what this transfer crackdown is aiming to mitigate, kids just packing up for the highest offer every year.

I don't think the rule will hold long term, but this is what they're trying to prevent.

U Conn didn't have some elite PG. They had guys that could pass, set up others, play D and drive the ball. I think Williams, possibly Harmon, and a late season DGL may step up. I do agree i would like to add a PG that can do those things and shoot if we can get a good one. Otherwise you take Reeves.
To further your point, UConn had a PG who *checks notes*

Is 6’5 and transferred from ECU (a known basketball powerhouse)

He shot an electric 32.4, 26.2 and 33.3 from 3 before transferring to UConn. His overall FG% was even more earth shattering at 39, 34.8 and 43.5

But we are spending pages upon pages poo poo’ing getting Williams because he “can’t shoot.”

Maybe you’re right. Maybe that’s the strategy that will win out…the way the wind is blowing…who knows?

I’m not sure what Euro guys you specifically have in mind…but I don’t think I’d wanna say: never-ever to Europe. I mean Giorgi was certainly a success story. Matic Vesel and Perrin not so much. The latter two…certainly had the makings/potential of being something. They’ve been a mixed bag…but you can see the thought process there…with both at least. And know Moretti too. HUGE upside IMO
I don’t know what the answer is. But it wasn’t long ago that this staff proudly talked about putting emphasis on the developmental side of the program.
Which I thought was great. I don’t think you wanna lose that…at least not completely.
