I second this comment!!Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you Dan.
As far as I know the only rule for NIL is it can't officially be tied to performance - so could we say "$100K first year, then it doubles every year after that, that you remain on the team"?Our NIL deals need to start being heavily weighted to subsequent years.
I would be doing multi year contracts with performance incentives and personal expectations. I realize they can't but that is a way to start controlling it.Our NIL deals need to start being heavily weighted to subsequent years.
My understanding is the contracts are not between any university entity and the player, but rather third parties, who control the contract language. Therefore, trying to impose a multi year deal on the players may not be in the best interests of the parties writing the checks . . . .I would be doing multi year contracts with performance incentives and personal expectations. What do you do if a student walks away from the program despite the contractI would be doing multi year contracts with performance incentives and personal expectations. I realize they can't but that is a way to start controlling it.

Hello Hal , how can I help you today ??
View attachment 26721
Well Dr. Chandra , I wonder why the loyalty board has such great disdain for Mr. Underwood lately ??
View attachment 26722
I've been wondering that myself Hal.....Do you have an opinion on this subject ??
View attachment 26721
Well , it seems to me that the Illini Nation doesn't appreciate the last 4 years of play by the Illini............

Well Hal , welcome to the world of human misgivings and reservations relating to reality.....The carbon unit brain has serious flaws related to enjoying anything good going on without the natural Homo Sapien behavior of something bad is just around the corner......Does that make sense to you.........

Is this a correlation dating back to their hunter-gatherer history and worrying about their existence for the immediate future ??
View attachment 26722
yes , that's one way to look at it .......another way is the belief that the human brain can't stand success without the similar existence of their extinction lingering in the vast recesses of their mind........
View attachment 26721
OK , I think I get it ........it's been forecast that a carbon unit only uses 10 % of their brain ..............right ??
View attachment 26722
That is correct Hal , but when it comes to sports and the active duty of being a fanatic about certain teams that all reality goes out the proverbial window........

I'm glad our windows are only for looking out Dr. Chandra.....................

NIL funding for student athletes by 3rd parties is uniquely purposeful for having that athlete be at a specific university, so I don't see an issue here with 3rd parties as they know their role in this. I think multi-year contracts are the future here and it probably won't look all that dissimilar to most sports contracts, maybe a first appearance premium that acts as a signing bonus, and escalators built in based on loyalty to make backloaded contracts. My understanding is the contracts are not between any university entity and the player, but rather third parties, who control the contract language. Therefore, trying to impose a multi year deal on the players may not be in the best interests of the parties writing the checks . . . .
Mad props, Pru. As an ardent 2001/2010/Clarke/Kubrick fan I'm all for these metaphorical references. (BTW, I re-watched Interstellar last evening for the umpteenth time. Big Christopher Nolan fan, too. Perhaps we can enter a black hole, speak to Mr. Underwood last April from our Friday morning June 23 QB chair, solve some sort of gravity conundrum communicated via Morse code through an old wristwatch, and salvage our PG recruitment, thus saving humanity.)View attachment 26721

To you, apparently. It's a big tent here.
Can he start this fall and form a rivalry with his brother?this would be good:
FWLIW, I doubt this guy has inside info
sidenote: can we keep the Podz stuff on the NBA/cottage cheese thread, please?

My more succinct answer to your question "I wonder why the loyalty board has such great disdain for Mr. Underwood lately ??"
The human tendency toward "What have you done for me lately?" And the axiom that, like nature, the Board discussion, abhors a vacuum.
As I've noted regularly, I have nothing useful to add to the various opinions about Mr. Underwood's recruiting acumen, temperamental volatility, and alleged mulishness and general uselessness. We'll see where we are in mid-November, and again in January. And then early March. The world is not static.
I'm a glass-half-full guy. Not interested in making the best the enemy of the good when intangibles have yet to be priced into the value of Illini basketball stock. Or, worse still, time-travel back to 2015.
Perhaps we'll end up next February sorely disappointed. Or perhaps, per Dave Bowman, as he enters the star gate, we'll exclaim: "The thing's hollow.... it goes on forever and... oh my God!... it's full of stars!"
Life, after all, is glorious mystery. Peace out to my Illini brothers and sisters; kind wishes for a pleasant weekend.
It seems like we are in a great spot with Fears. But given he is a 2025, would it be wrong to fear, even if he does commit, that the recruitment isn't really over?this would be good:
