The main key aspect of point guard, or any position, is experience. Trent didn’t know all of Purdue’s plays by seeing them a couple of times. He had five years of playing against the Boilers to gather that intel. Certainly a player can come in an be effective as a freshman, but there’s a reason why Brad wants to get old and stay old.
Yep.

I sincerely hope we are able to do that in this era… and semi-consistently have a two-tiered approach…the development side -balanced with the portal.

We were doing some great things on the development side for a while…I hope we can have a little better retention and get that back a little bit. (That suits Brad’s coaching style better than the: “were gonna go out and get stars” aim. Plus, it’s not sustainable as we’re starting to find out.)

In other words, I hope we’re able
to keep guys long enough to develop. (That’s not a dig…it’s tough for everyone.)
I just hope we’re able to.

I don't think Freshmen have trouble playing PG any more than any other position. The mental part of the position is usually something one either has or doesn't have. Like a QB in football. You can't just take a player at another position and try to make him a QB.

We've had plenty of FR PGs who were studs right out of the gate.

That may be true, but given the responsibilities that PGs have late game, I think the freshman mistakes tend to stand out.

Was trying to tell everyone months ago that Ty is going to be a 12/7/5 type guy & no one listened. He really is THAT good, it was clear as day last year….
Not picking on you. But it isn't you (in general) against the whole board on certain issues. I see a lot of posts presented as if the OP is the only one who feels a certain way or EVERYBODY attacked the OP for their opinion. This is just not true.

As far as Ty goes, a lot of us think he will be a HUGE STAR and this year he will break out.

I just want to throw something out here:

I’m as excited about the football program under Bielema as anyone. However, the near unanimous positivity in those threads compared to the negativity here really shows just how high our expectations are for basketball.

Football is probably looking at anything from 6-8 wins realistically, we have an increase in season ticket sales that should get us up to the relatively low goal of 50k at many conference games and we now have a top 40 recruiting class after signing several 3-stars … and we’re on Cloud Nine.

Basketball is three years removed from a #1 seed, has hung two Big Ten banners in three years, we return almost everyone from a team that was up and down but got as high as top 20 in the rankings and showed real potential and our recruiting for the next couple years is still much better than football all things considered … and the fact that we don’t have a new PG that would guarantee us a top 20/top 5 seed type season has us in apocalypse mode.

I get why it is this way given the history, and I’m frustrated that the lack of an experienced PG might cap the ceiling of a team that could otherwise make a run in March … but I’m just sayin’. I think we have a right to complain right now a bit, but if you’re getting TOO down, just try to remember the reason we are so up in arms about a situation Minnesota/Mississippi State/Cal/etc. would KILL for is because this program has a storied history and has shown repeatedly how high the ceiling is here!

I think we might owe Underwood and these guys the opportunity to prove that last year was the aberration as far as Illini basketball goes. After cleaning up Groce’s mess, we have had three great seasons and one subpar one; the sample size should at LEAST cause you to reserve a small bit of judgment.

Okay, back to your complainin’. 😎

I also am amazed that so many seem to be thinking BU is on the 'hot seat' for missing the second weekend of the tourney. If that is the standard, then about a dozen teams in the B1G should be firing their coaches about now, Most of those teams went to the tourney once, if that, over the past three years. The conference is made up of high profile, very well funded teams with top notch coaches. Some schools may have more money, less history , but coaching ranges from very good to excellent., and funding runs from 'haves' to haves more' And nearly all would love to have our recent record and our team going into the season.

Whoa, whoa, WHOA! There you go, injecting a realistic, logical post in a Loyalty thread! Is that allowed?
