Yes and No. Just from what I have heard, Ty has blown everyone away so far and looks to be really good.

I don't know about MPG for DGL, but he has an absolute gem of an opportunity in front of him. This staff's PG fumble means he can definitely have some say in his playing time.

I for one hope he Trent Frazier's the f#$k out of it, and Bezhanishvili's it out of the park.

I've seen a few posts in the recruiting thread suggesting that Ty isn't a PG, and while true, based on what we saw last year, didn't he play point for his high school team? I mean, I know he was a stud in high school and probably not facing B1G defensive guards, but it seems that he had the mentality to play point at least in high school.

Ty played point his Senior year in high school. With his ability to penetrate and find open shooters, he could be very good.

What kind of leap are we looking for from Ty and Dain this season? Could they both be all-Big 10 caliber players this year?
I know I’m probably in the minority, but I think DD may have the better year. He already has tremendous post moves. Put a jumper together with some better free throw shooting, he can be all B10. Ty will be good due to his hustling style but I’m not seeing him being a superstar…. Not yet anyway.

I am getting kind of old and senile, but iirc, he would lead the fast break a lot. Very adept at dishing or kicking to open teammates. He could also finish with either hand through contact.

In the half court, he would often bring the ball up. He could then dribble drive, or pass it off and move to a wing or go inside and post up

Guess I have a different view of PG. more important to take it to the basket so the defense collapses and opens up threes than just shooting them. Size also important to see over the defense. Doing video work also important to recognize defenses and know how to attack them. Painter mentioned in an interview that Trent knew all their offensive plays and knew what to do defensively. Reason frosh have trouble is not skill but the mental part of the position. Don’t know if Ty has these attributes but believe they are much more important than shooting threes. Andres Feliz shot .270 and .274 from three and was a very capable PG.

Feliz was amazing, truly. Undersized body, huge heart, real warrior. Stayed within himself but played the game really hard.

With Ty's freshman shooting, it's really hard to imagine he could create good spacing for shooters. We've had limited shooters at PG before, so it's doable, but man, that's a tough limitation to have in a college, guard-oriented game.

And put me in the camp that refuses to get excited about practice reports. If I watched practice every year, I might know enough or be dialed in so well that I could tell whether a team was special or not. But as a fan, all I know is we get off-season hype every year, and some of it translates to games, and some of it doesn't. All that said, I'll get excited once the season starts --some good talent on this team, and I really enjoy watching TSJ in attack mode.

Feliz was a total bada$$. True leader.
No way we lose to Loyola if he was out there.
That team in 19/20 was Underwood's best.

I don't think Freshmen have trouble playing PG any more than any other position. The mental part of the position is usually something one either has or doesn't have. Like a QB in football. You can't just take a player at another position and try to make him a QB.

We've had plenty of FR PGs who were studs right out of the gate.

The main key aspect of point guard, or any position, is experience. Trent didn’t know all of Purdue’s plays by seeing them a couple of times. He had five years of playing against the Boilers to gather that intel. Certainly a player can come in an be effective as a freshman, but there’s a reason why Brad wants to get old and stay old.

To bring things full circle … maybe Ty will have a Podz-style breakout sophomore year!
Hope Ty has a breakout sophomore year. And looks less like Goode (unfortunate injury) and RJ.
