I know what you mean but this did make me laugh. Their payroll is #17. They are more than $10 mil below the league average. Still if they are maneuvering to go after a big fish on the FA market having more room is a good thing.
Less of team payroll for this season and by trading say DeJong you aren't paying him $12M next year if you used the club option. No excuse for not adding SP through FA/trade this offseason when Montgomery and DeJong(and others) money lands you a $10-20M pitcher. Not saying it will happen like that at all but yeah was just all for example. I can be critical of guys like DeJong, TON, Matz, etc but I have nothing against them. Weaknesses get noticed more when you are paying someone $5-20 million a year and the cheap guys in pre-arb and arbitration years making a fraction outperform them.

Cardinals have Mikolas and Matz inked for next years rotation. Matz has been steady the past few starts but it also comes down to where the organization values them in the rotation. If the Cards value Mikolas as #1 starter and Matz as say a #3 starter next season than we have some major problems. "Cardinal Way" will likely land Matz at #4 and cheap in system pitcher at #5 spot next season.

If you had told me in 2019 that we would end up dumping him for a couple of meh prospects, I would have thought you were crazy.

Hopefully Donovan's issues won't need surgery or turn into something more serious.

Likely why Cards held onto Edman. Play Edman at SS until Winn comes up. Edman is perfect insurance policy for Winn/Donovan.

yep. I had hoped he would be the Cardinals "no doubt about it SP1 for 10-12 years". *sigh* 2019 was the only year he put it together for the whole season.
Had a few of those recently. Wacha, Martinez, etc. Been awhile since we had a prime Wainwright or Carpenter type that you can count on for years.

Tink Hence, be that guy. No pressure.

At least we don't have to suffer through the C.B. Bucknor home plate antics this series........

Edman did have the surgery today but he's expected to be ready for spring training. He preferred to do it now rather than at the end of the season as he didn't want to spend all of spring training next year rehabbing.

Jim Hayes asked MO on the pre game show about the open 3 spots for 2024. Mo ducked the question

Edman has two years of arbitration left. My original thought awhile back was they are keeping him around until Winn takes over at SS sometime next season. Never know how guys adjust to the major league level. Not sure if Edman is in long term plans but I would rather see Cardinals stick with Winn and Edman at SS/2B (both can play either), Gorman mainly DH while also playing 2B, Donovan can play multiple positions and OF. Not sure how long Goldy will play but Donovan could fill in on off days at 1B/3B plus 2B and OF. Might need to play Donovan at 1B and give Goldy a few extra games at DH next season for rest.

Mo never shows his cards.....or at least that is what he wants everyone to believe

I am not saying the cheap way because there are ways to get players. I wouldn't be surprised if they sign one starter through free agency, trade for one in the offseason and promote a random contract already in the system. Long time away so all just fun and games. If they would do that than one of the guys acquired needs to be the #1 guy. Mikolas at #1 spot is a joke. Problem is they need inning eaters at least in the 1-3 spots. Matz is max 5-6 inning guy on a good day and #5 starter is usually the same way.

Wishful thinking but I would love to see them acquire two top end starters. Mikolas at #3, Matz #4 and random inside organization at #5 I could live with for sure.

I agree with what you say. My issue is that ownership and management were apparently oblivious to the pitching issues. They certainly did not take necessary steps to fix the situation. In my view this did not just happen this year. A short 2 years ago the Cardinals were dead in the water until a 17 game winning streak pulled them out of the abyss. The subsequent lack of success in the playoffs in 21 and 22 points to lack of pitching in my view. Mozeliak is on the record in the last 2 weeks saying that management expected Dakota Hudson to be in the rotation this year. I guess that appraisal will now come to fruition.

No doubt

Two main things happened over the past few years....Cardinals got complacent with pitching and the price for pitching went through the roof. Management used the next man up routine for years and it worked. Wainwright ran out of gas towards end of last year, no gas this year, etc. The whole thing backfired this season and management is aware of the problem. It is time to tinker with it and pressure is on management which is good.

I don't buy into the Cardinals are cheap method like some fans on here. Cardinals overpaid Wainwright and Yadi for years yet fans would be irate if management let them leave. Cardinals have developed position players to mix with stars, same can't be said for effective top end pitching. Literally been since probably 2021 at the earliest that a ton of teams are throwing out insane contracts(majority of time don't work). Team payrolls went from $100-150 million to $150-170 million is league average over the past few seasons. Mo has not developed anything close to an ace pitcher since he took over in management. SP drops off huge after Ohtani in free agency this offseason. Not dived into it yet but my guess Julio Urias will be the next decent FA guy since he would only be 27 on the market though only having a so-so season. All rumor mill until the offseason....until than we added some prospects and tryout season for 2024 the rest of the way.

I hope this rain doesn’t crash the party. 4homers in 3innings of play. O’Neil, Walker, Noot and now Burleson’s 3-run homer. This is fun baseball. Glad the team is backing up Hudson.

Cardinals have a 4 run lead with 1 out in the top of the 8th and I'm nervous still.............Pallante instills no confidence in my thoughts regarding closing this thing out.....Now Pallante just hit a batter , so 2 on with 1 out....................
