Teams like Toledo always bring the A++++ game, it's big feather in the cap if they whack a major like Illini. These teams all seem to have a super incentive to play hard.
I think the Illini will match or exceed Toledo's intensity, mid majors advantage vs. power 5 is the go for broke, nothing to lose factor.

easy easy.. not trying to stir the pot but after 15 years of going to games he was on the sideline for first win I ever saw in person vs. WMU CC: Lovie, Moeller, Valek
All good, I was just joshing. I have the opposite experience ... my family and I drove 4 hours to Champaign to watch Louisiana Tech absolutely throttle us at home in Beckman's third game, lol.

they kicked our arse the entire game iirc
it was a Sat night game correct ?

I've been to probably 95% of Illinois home games since I was 6 or 7, so 1995-96. I've been some terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Illinois losses. That game was by far the most embarrassed I've ever been to be an Illinois fan

I am so pumped for this year's Illini team, minus the new uniforms 😆. If Luke can keep interceptions down and pass accuracy to 60-65%.. I believe we will win enough games to get to Indianapolis.
I love our OLine and of course our defensive front 6 or 7. What also gives me confidence is even with all of our Db's skipping the bowl game against Mississippi st. The youn men/ back ups in the 2 deep played great. Will Roger's is legit.
Plus, we got a freshman All American from FAU and don't sleep on Gabe Jacas! Nicario Harper, etc. Our running backs Have to Step up. The offensive line will do their job. Go Illini

I'm "nervous" for this one because Toledo is a good football team, but not in the way I would be truly nervous in years past ... I have no doubt Bret and Co. will have our boys ready to play and will not take Toledo lightly in any way, shape or form. We have a tough trip to Lawrence coming up six days after and a massive home game against PSU a week after that, so I think everyone knows how important it is to start this season off strong.

Illinois 31
Toledo 14

I also hope we can give the staff and the team a nice gesture by having over 45k in the stands. While having below 55k or so for the home opener is still well below "big boy program" levels, it takes time to reengage the fanbase, and 45k would represent a very big (nearly 20%) increase from last year's crowd vs. Wyoming. Not sure if our boy @IlliniInBuckeyeState has seen any movement on the sellout tracker, but it looks like as of now the west side will be pretty much full, East Main will be decently full but will have splotches of empty areas, the Horseshoe will be full at the bottom and empty in the last several rows and the East Balcony will be quite sparsely populated. For reference of where I feel we should be getting back to as a respectable program, here are past home openers vs. non-Power Five opponents:

2022: 37,832 vs. Toledo
...
2016: 48,644 vs. Murray State (Lovie's first season created an uptick)
...
2011: 45,154 vs. Arkansas State
2010: 52,217 vs. Southern Illinois
2009: 62,347 vs. Southern Illinois (above current capacity but not quite a sellout in 2009)
2008: 60,131 vs. Eastern Illinois (see above)
2007: 48,301 vs. Western Illinois
2006: 45,444 vs. Eastern Illinois (for a 2-10 Illini team that was 2-10 the year before)
...
2004: 46,106 vs. Florida A&M (for a 3-8 Illini team that was 1-11 the year before...)
2003: 56,304 vs. Illinois State
2002: 46,258 vs. Arkansas State (pretty bad showing coming off Sugar Bowl season)
2001: 45,674 vs. Northern Illinois

So, moral of the story I guess is that while it will take time to reengage even more fans and the nature of attending a game vs. watching on TV has drastically changed in recent years, even a bad Illini team should be putting 45k+ in the stands every game. There are just too many people in the C-U area, Central Illinois and at least SOME able to travel from Chicago, St. Louis or wherever not to have that many in attendance (i.e., it just speaks to apathy and nothing else). For years where we have a bit of hype like 2008 or 2009, it seems we can easily get above 50k.

So - getting close to 50k for this opener would be a pretty meaningful statement that our fan base is fully behind this staff and team!
Having 10,000 new season ticket holders should go a long way towards filling the stadium, assuming those are real-people tickets and not resellers. But it the resellers buy them, they're doing so on the hope of making money. I hope they do.

I can understand you angst... however in my mind, nothing (repeat: NOTHING) can be more embarrassing than a 0-0 tie against Northwestern with Gary Moeller as head coach... JMHO

I haven't been this excited in the offseason for an Illini football season since I want to say, '02.
You must have missed the hype going into 2008 season. Truly a letdown season after going to Rose Bowl, especially the debacle in Detroit vs Western Michigan.

I expect the team to have fire in belly this year and avoid the feeling we had that year.

Wasn’t even that level of success mostly due to one of his coordinators at Toledo?
Campbell OC, Candle WR.

Campbel took Heacock with him to ISU. Candle tried Beckmans D guy for a couple years (didn't work at all). Then hired Vince Kehres, D3 HC of national title Mount Union where Candle played... Also son of legendary coach Larry Kehres. And now the group is humming.

Both will be P5 coaches in the future. Candle enjoys his time in the 2nd cheapest city in America and has turned down OC spots at Miami in 22, and 23. As well as the ND OC job. Candle is a gem.

And to add insult to injury, after the game, Moeller said he was "proud" of his team.

Not sure how many additional tickets we can realistically sell in ten days, but this is what ticket sales are looking like just from eyeballing it:

West Main: Probably packed ... vast majority of tickets sold.
West Balcony: Mostly full ... "low" availability. Side note, this section seems like a steal! Amazing seats for only $25?!
East Main: Mostly full ... "low" availability in most sections and singles in some. Which means the visible seats will be mostly full.
East Balcony: Pretty empty? Although maybe the fact that the top rows are even available on the website means we are doing decently well with sales.
Horseshoe: Looking about 60% full right now, but I swear that section is full even during our crowds of 35k, lol ... so a little hope there?

I know my obsession with attendance is a bit old and it simply takes time to build up the fan base again, but what Bret has accomplished so far here is nothing short of amazing, and I am not sure the attendance uptick reflects that yet. Again, these things tend to lag, but I wish we'd put a few more fans in the stands. If we can beat Toledo and then take our chances with KU, we should have a great crowd for PSU, though.

Beat Toledo!
Here is the updated Sellout Watch for Toledo:

I won't include the screen shot here, but Penn State is currently sitting at just under 46k tickets sold.

I’m a season ticket holder for the first time. I’ll also say I care wayyyyyy more about basketball than football. But the lower prices and just the momentum from Bret and company has got me completely bought in. I have 4 tickets in the horseshoe and for any games I don’t attend, I plan on giving them away for free. I want the seats filled so I hope others either sell them cheap or give them away as well if you’re in the cheaper seats.

Toledo is so good that one of their former water boys needs to come on to their opponents message board and demand that they are good. Then says that if given the opportunity he will disrespect our coach to his face because they beat a 3-9 Arkansas team. Have you guys heard that Toledo has actually had NFL players? Cmon man… the insecurity couldn’t be more obvious.

Most Illini fans are worried about the week 1 match up v Toledo.
That's what we do.
Indeed. If there's been one consistent thing about our program in the 21st century that isn't being one of the cellar dwellers of the B10, it's in the rare instance of us having success, us doing a season of full faceplants in front of our finally excited about something/anything fanbase the following season. This season feels different to me, I really hope so at least.

My favorite post of this thread.

By the way, I'm in the small group that is actually very concerned about this first game versus Toledo. I have no idea what our running game will look like.
I think most Illini fans are approaching this game with the appropriate amount of concern. Toledo's a good team that can surprise someone. Having said that, Bert and staff are going to game plan appropriately and we won't be surpised. Toledofan's assertions that the staff is "looking past" Toledo because they're using practices to game plan for several opponents and not just the first is--unsurprisingly--the mental gymnastics typically seen in little brothers with inferiority complexes.
