Illinois 30, Toledo 28 Postgame

Offense:
From what I saw, Kreutz and the rest of the line weren't on the same page when it came to timing as all our players looked slow off the snap. So either something was dodgy with our snap count or our players all got a step slower with regards to reaction time. My best guess is Kreutz was jazzed up and snapping a little early. If that's the case, this could be fixed by next week. Hard to tell much else as Toledo seemed to know our snap count better than we did.

So again, no excuses, but just my best guess at what went wrong
You've got me thinking on the snaps. Perhaps it was communication between Kreutz and Altmyer. I'm no expert, but I believe our linemen are going on the QBs voice. The defense is probably looking at the ball? Is the center is getting a physical signal from the QB (pressure on his a$$ perhaps) that tells him the next call is the snap? Perhaps Kreutz is anticipating it too much? Or Altmyer (inexperienced) is too slow?

Anyway, it would be nice if this very fixable item was the problem.

I've been an Illini football fan / watching games for 40 seasons. When Luke dropped that dime to Casey a split second before he got leveled by that freight train of a lineman I thought to myself: "We just witnessed a truly historic Illini offensive play." Not to exaggerate but it reminded me of watching Jeff George take us down the field in the Coliseum to beat #5 USC on Labor Day evening 1989. LA has the chops to move the ball like no one we've had under center in a long while.

A lot to clean up after Week 1. The difference c/w prior seasons is that BB is in charge and I have faith that he and his staff can adjust, inculcate and inspire the players. I'm rooting for Aaron. That's a heavy load he's carrying as DC and father of twin newborns.
To throw a perfect 30yd dot on the sideline from the pocket while a defensive lineman has a completely unimpeded line to the quarterback into the tightest defended window imaginable is mindblowing. Most of the QBs who can do that are starting on Sundays. Just sheer willpower to get that done in your first game no less.

I'll say this- if before the game you told any Illinois fan Toledo was going to put up 28 on us, the overwhelming majority would have said we lost. It is a testament to how well he played that we didn't. Some of the best qb play I've ever seen in an Illinois uniform. If he does this all season, we are beyond blessed

LA was the great unknown coming into this game, of course. If he can move the ball, and our O-line can open up a bit of room for Reggie and Josh, LA will keep us in a lot of games this season. Tommy D was a warrior for us last season but there's no way without Chase breaking open a couple long runs that the final drive last night ends in anything but disappointment if it occurred a year ago.

My main concern: the O-line needs to protect him better. When he had time to throw last night he was surgical, and opportunistic with the run. Those slants to Isaiah (on 4th down) and PB (for the score) on the TD drive late were beautiful and tight. Only one poor decision all night.

So pleased that we've got him for three seasons.

if he indeed has the college career we hope he does , I do have a hard time seeing him stick around that long .
I love your enthusiasm, but we should pump the brakes. If he has the career that we hope that he does, he'll be the #1 pick in the draft...says every team in college football. I'd be more than happy with 3 years of uninjured Tommy Devito production.

The questions before the game were qb and the db’s. They showed up but the strengths were not so strong.
That is what makes me excited. If the strength of the team lives to expectations, the QB and DB play is good enough to win a lot of games. This team looks like another 7-9 game win team. That is what is exciting!

I remember last year reading about early season timing issues with our brand-new center, and then things started clicking a few games in. Hoping it's the same learning curve with Kreutz that will level out soon.

First five minutes of the game we controlled
They pretty much controlled the remaining 55 minutes

we really rarely seemed to be in sync on either side of the ball . it was weird .

it’s a solvable problem just weird that Toledo dictated the flow of the entire game after our opening drive

I am 75 years old and a proud Illinois alum ('73.) I have been watching football - grade school, high school, college and pro for about 74 years. I have never seen such a weak, passive, regrettable performance as our defensive line did today. Bad tackling and NO PASS RUSH. DL is one of our strengths??? SMH.
You started watching football when you were 1?

all kidding aside, the defensive line performance was concerning. They need to bring extra pressure id that was the extent of our pass rush.

I think people had the right to wonder about this team. They looked brutal in the first half. No other way to put it. I had remind myself of what happened last year when Illinois lost to Indiana. They didn't look like a real good team at that point either, but turned it around. We will know a lot more after the Kansas game.
Am I on the basketball page? Hmm, poor first half, come out better and pull out a Win.

Kansas coming up should tell us more.....

As I reflect, Toledo played a good game and really is a solid team. But, if we eliminated half of our penalties, we win going away. When we were clicking, we were clearly the better team.

What I’m trying to say is, IF we clean things up, we can win 7+ games this year. That said, if we keep beating ourselves, we’ll be lucky to win 4-5 games.

I think we pull a close one out at Kansas, BUT it’s going to be an emotional night on the board.

I guess I just don't see it that way. I'd say they were in a lot of control from about 5 minutes in until about 4 minutes into the second half (about half the game). And even then, we created a lot of self-inflicted wounds within those 30 minutes to allow them to be in control. Outside of those 30 minutes, we outscored them 30-10, and 7 of those ten came courtesy of us shooting ourselves in the foot again.

The more I talk about and analyze this game, the better I am actually feeling about it and the season. All of the problems from last night are fixable. Some easier than others, but definitely fixable. It's better than other problems like "oh crap... our QB stinks" or something like that. It definitely wasn't all doom and gloom, and I'd go even further to say we should be pretty excited about what we did see last night in a lot of areas of the game.

Just curious, how did the Toledo fan section stack up? It was a terrific stadium and concourse set up. Very odd not being able to see the section above us. It was intimate up in the higher sections of 110 with the overhang.
It was hard to tell numbers because they brought the band, which takes up the first 15 rows of section 110. It was fuller than other teams, though. They were not the rowdiest or the loudest section I've witnessed in my years sitting next to the visitors. It was nice to see your fans also struggle with "when do we make noise" vs. "when do we be quiet". I found it funny when there were obvious times Illinois fans should be loud, and Toledo fans should be quiet, Toledo fans seemed louder than ours. It didn't help that the cheerleaders kept holding up "Make Noise" signs at the worst time 😂

At one point, like 5 minutes into the second, your fans started chanting "overrated", which was odd, since we are neither rated, nor was the game close to being finished. I'm glad Illinois won, though, or I'm be afraid the fans would have been insufferable. That touchdown late in the 4th made me so nervous to hear whatever was going to come if we lost.

Really? You don’t think we were in control during the stretch of play where we rattled off 20 straight points to go from down 12 to up 8?

Right on. I think the 15 or so students who came did the overrated thing. Dumb. Always a hard ask for the parents to get loud when they don't have a connection to the university, just their kids. The 30 to 40 year old crowd experienced the only real lul Toledo has had in 3 decades and those fans are where the noise should come from. The 60somethings can only do so much.

Ha I beat you to it! Also, I took this for you. It’s from about 20 minutes before the game kicked off. I eat my words today. The students came out in force and stayed until close to the end. I’d say the same section empty here was the first part to leave towards the end, too.
And when the band took the field for pregame less than 5 minutes later, only the very top corners were empty. The thing to be weary of tho is that this was a night game which means Block already happened. I'm still worried in 2 weeks for Penn State there will still be way too many students with tickets skipping the game to go to block.

Is there an obvious game I'm missing where we were manhandled like that up front in the Bielema era? I can't think of one, @PSU in 2021 and @Michigan last year we certainly were not.

And that was Toledo. Yikes.
I wouldn't sweat this quite yet. We were definitely out of sync, which can be fixed with practice. It seems the O-Line struggled a bit in the first couple games of the past 2 seasons - remember how we couldn't punch the ball into the end zone against IU last year?
