Wisconsin 25, Illinois 21 Postgame

Paper. Thin. Depth.
And honestly, it doesn't seem like that's going to change any time soon. Question for you guys that are in the know...is our recruiting at a level that can legitimately change our depth issues? I'm not an expert, but it sure doesn't feel like it is. Feels like next year has the potential to be worse than this year. If that happens, gonna be really hard for Bielema to get this program on a path to consistently winning. Sucks to be an Illini fan sometimes.

The ball control nature of grinding out wins is stupid.

When was the last national champion a team that grounded you out and beat you in a close game? NO ONE in the SEC plays like that. Michigan and Ohio State do not play that way. TCU did not play that way last year.

Auburn? Florida State? Seriously I can’t think of a National Champion, hell any participant in a BCS game that played ball control.

Playing not to lose….. gets you beat.

Y’all really have to stop with this. He screamed for every touchdown of ours I believe. They’re very passionate you just don’t notice it for our side Because …. We don’t do anything worth yelling about.
He did scream for our touchdowns too. But otherwise the commenting was egregiously tilted waaay toward the badgers. If we made a good play they talked about what Wisc did wrong, and when they made a good play it was all about how awesome they were.

Had a chance to talk with some well respected Illinois high school coaches tonight. They were collectively pissed off at some key play calling, obviously in the 4th quarter. We lack discipline in every aspect of the game, players and coaches.....ESPECIALLY the coaches. It is not going to improve. We will have maddening Saturdays like this with this regime. We are Illinois. We will never be Michigan, Ohio State, or Penn State. We will have the occasional great year every 12-15 years, then regress badly. There is a documented history.

Time for basketball....
The shame is that this is the year to make a move. We'll not see a schedule this easy for the foreseeable future. We miss both OSU and Meatchicken and the west division is unusually weak.

Yes it was. But the Illini received a lesson today from their Neighbors To The North about winning -- and how to win. When Wisky got down they did not panic. Nor did they let the Illini get further ahead when they could have done so. Wisky then methodically played their way back into the game. And then -- when they had little time left and a long way to go down the field -- they just went ahead and did that. No excuses. Did the zebras help them? Maybe so, but bad calls are part of the game and you have to get past that if you want to win.

That's a lesson in how to win football games. When the Illini watch the game tape - they need to get past their frustration of losing and pay attention to what and how it all happened today.

Teams like Wisconsin have developed a poise over the years and a type of confidence that the Illini have yet to develop. The ability to close games is essential for any good and winning football team.

And this lesson also applies to the roundballers, too. The Illini have to have that ability to lock down leads late in games and also the ability to execute when there is little time on the clock when they've got to either have a bucket... or stop the opponent from scoring in final possessions. Like an Ayo.

Who is the 'Ayo-'type on the football team? Which guys can develop this kind of way to take over a game when you have to?
Sorry, that is an entirely new staff with a lot of new players. It’s not Wisky winning because they’re Wisky. It’s our coaches getting out outcoached and because they have way more talent than we do.

Got home from my son’s hockey game earlier. My son had a monster game in a 6-2 win. Came home and watched some of the recording and then went to dinner while we were still up 21-7, feeing pretty good about this weekend. Came home and watched the rest. Just finished it.

The wife (also an alum) suggested we skip to the end and save ourselves the pain. But we watched it, blindly hopeful like always. She asked, “Are you going to check the forum and see what people are saying?” Read through the post-game thread and told her it’s exactly what we’re thinking. Abject misery.

Luke needs to learn to throw it away when it ain’t there … And also when it’s 5 seconds left … Sling. The. Dang. Ball.

I like Luke … He’s certainly our best option … But we’re watching him go through his growing pains right now … We’ll see how he comes out of it …
He’s 8 games in, though.

IMO, that should not be an issue in Year 3 of this regime, with access to transfer portal.
To be fair, he lost how many players to the NFL last year, plus a Senior QB. Unless you're Ohio State, Penn State or Michigan, you just can't reload to that magnitude. They have first year guys stepping in to some of those roles.

At the end of the first half, and as the 4th quarter progressed, the Illini became much more passive and played not to lose, instead of playing to win. That strategy blew up on us against a poor Indiana team last year, and again today. This team is playing better overall, but lacks a killer instinct when we clearly have another team on the ropes.

I could never figure out what Bret was upset about, but there was something that happened in the 4th quarter on the east side of the field that had him furious. He was in the zeebs' ears for a while right after that, and then a couple of times again after that. I don't know if UW had 12 men on the field or something else, but he was clearly going after every official he could to make his case. I haven't listened to his presser yet, so don't know if he brought up specifics.

On the other hand, this was one heck of a football game for 45 minutes. The crowd was great and really into it, far more orange than red in the east main (although still way too much red), a great homecoming crowd, honors for the 83 team that played in the 84 Rose Bowl, and the Marching Illini again proved they're the best band in the land. I'm ticked about the loss and the playcalling, but still a magnificent afternoon in October where Illinois football was competitive.

So which is it? He screamed at all of ours....or we didn't do anything worth yelling?

Because he absolutely did not scream at anything Illinois in the same manner he did at Wisconsin. He sounded completely normal @ our successful plays.
If I tuned it out...I'll wait to hear proof.

And as far as "Y'all", as I said...I don't normally participate in this. Today it stood out. And I fully expect the Gus Johnson antics. This was both announcers.
Well we coulda just left this alone but since you asked for proof, watch this YouTube video with time stamps.

1:03 - about to c*m over Luke’s scramble.
1:56 - real juiced about an IL strip
2:09 - great run by “FEAAAAAAGINNN”
2:30 - unfortunately they cut it short since the TD was overturned but both guys were very enthusiastic for a good minute over the Isaiah TD. It felt very biased, wish they had that one in full in this vid.
6:43 - Aiden Laughery screen pass and run. Very enthusiastic.
7:35 - sh*tting himself over an Altmyer scramble.
7:52 - yelling for a TD Illinois.

Yes, they were much louder for the Wisconsin touchdowns and stuff later in the game but that’s because they were down 21-7 and pulled it back for the win in very clutch moments. You’re upset that you didn’t hear them yelling for Illinois nearly as much but newsflash our offense is anemic and we make loads of boneheaded plays on defense. We give away games we have no business losing. We aren’t worth yelling for and this dude tried his best.

I loved it. Anyone who had a problem with them has a failure to recognize their job to maximize the stories and momentum of the game. Get over it.

That shouldn't have been targeting on Newton. It's crazy how video can show 1 thing and people interpret multiple occurrences. He made a conscious effort to lead with his arms.

Secondly, why can't we defend shallow crosses? I feel like our guys are never open as other teams on those routes.

Lastly, why are not mixing it up on third and longs????

I haven’t read all the comments yet but unloading. That call against Johnny was everything. Personal foul, fine. Targeting cost us the game. It was a death sentence ☠️. I called it then and there with my buddies. I said the game was lost (I’m by no means a pessimist). He was just as such a huge presence and Fickel smelled blood and attacked hard up the middle. Allen had little resistance after Newton was out. We didn’t have an answer. Sure the offense wasn’t productive but that call changed everything. I’m still raw about it.
