I just got home from the game--really good crowd despite the relatively low turnout. Krush was in full voice and was letting Dickinson hear it all evening long. A few takeaways--
1. Several bad look 3s early, but it settled down
2. Our ball movement was great. I had to look to the sideline to see if Norman Dale was over there.
3. Dickinson is a very bad defender. He got blown past so many times I lost count. While he got his points, he went 9-20 to get them.
4. Refs don't seem to call illegal screens when the screener swings their hip out while the defender is going by. Hunter does this a lot.
5. McCullar is very, very good. But we have a Shannon
6. KU's uniforms looked like pajamas from section 201. I'm more than happy with our home whites compared to that look.
7. We've got some good new pieces, I'm very excited to see how they develop. QG in particular looks like he has a pretty complete game
8. We had no made FGs for the last 2:35 and won the game

I think a lot of that you could live with because we did a very good job of running them off the 3 point line, and well, because Kansas is way too talented to not get theirs in the paint. But at the same time there were too many breakdowns and we allowed way too many easy paths to easy layups and yeah, that has to be cleaned up.
Coach Underwood in his interview after the game said that Coleman Hawlins' defense on Dickenson was elite.

lots of things to work on. and they will. hard. I love that the team is all in, and winning ball is paramount.

when Ty fully gets his offensive game down, look out. he doesn't need an outside shot: just drive and dish, go to the hole or shoot from 15' in. I'd give him a C+ today, but I think he's close. his decision making is a weapon and most teams don't have the athleticism and size to hold him down. his free throw form looks better (low bar, but still).

One more thing:
We won the first half by one point on 44% 3-point shooting, and we won the second half by six points on 36% 3-point shooting. So I really don’t think it’s fair to say we’ll only win when we’re hot from three.
Price check needed. But, the difference in percentage was just one make. The halves were more disparate than that, so your point still stands.

IF this were true, our record would've been abysmal last year
We shot 35% or better from three 7 times all year, and 3 of those were against monmouth, lindenwood, and minnesota

THe other 4 games were an L against IU, wisconsin (who we beat by the exact same amount when we shot 50+ from 3 as when we played them and shot 30%), Tx, UCLA

I think the shot selection on 3s was WAY better in this game than most of last year. LEss 1 pass full speed transition 3s, stepbacks, random off dribble 3s guarded, etc.
We do need to shore up the paint, but to be fair we were forcing them off the 3 pt line which opens that up down low and we were up against one of the best interior scorers in the league
Yes, I guess that is correct. Maybe a better way to put it is we beat GOOD teams when we shot well from 3 and looked like world beaters....like tonight. But it was a much tougher game to win when we didn't shoot well, which was often. After that first loss to Indiana, we only shot over 0.318 once the rest of the season and had a bunch of crappy losses and crappy games.

It's no secret Illinois was one of the Worst three-point shooting teams in the country last year (340th in the country). I'm happy we won, and apprehensive about the way we won. Reminds me a lot of the UCLA game. A LOT.

He also needs to improve some decision making and not being careless with the ball. He had a couple time where BU was upset because he tried to dribble into defenders instead of kicking the ball out. Still I loved his ability to get downhill.

I agree with this.

Seems that we still rely on the 3-pt shot a little too much. And Coleman and TSJ aren't going to hit them at a 50% clip all year long. In fact, Self pretty much said as much in his post-game presser.
I am on board with the over reliance of the 3 ball.

Still 0-0. Last year we could beat anyone. Now can they do it night in and night out. I think we are a better rounded team with more experience so we should be more consistent. Beating KU has to help the confidence of the team. I Rather this been a game that meant something and have a huge resume builder
