pretty, pretty good

lots of things to work on. and they will. hard. I love that the team is all in, and winning ball is paramount.

when Ty fully gets his offensive game down, look out. he doesn't need an outside shot: just drive and dish, go to the hole or shoot from 15' in. I'd give him a C+ today, but I think he's close. his decision making is a weapon and most teams don't have the athleticism and size to hold him down. his free throw form looks better (low bar, but still).
Yup, it became pretty obvious early that KU couldn't keep Dajuan on Ty or it was gonna get ugly. His ability to get downhill. And then muscle guys around the basket. Elite.
If Ty starts hitting jumpers, oh baby.

Here's a little gloom. You ain't gonna shoot 41% on 3s on the road, so get ready to play Dainja more than 9 mins.
This reminds me of the enthusiasm after we beat UCLA with TSJ going off from the 3 pt line. There was no way he could do that consistently and when we reverted to the mean on 3 pt shooting all the blemishes were apparent. So I’m going to remain cautiously optimistic. Let’s see how we fare when the outside shots aren’t falling.

i look forward to seeing the freshmen getting some minutes in some of the early season mismatch games. We need to keep those freshman connected so they come back next year.

Yeah, i know, sometimes you can play freshman and they still leave. Heck, Adam Miller started every game and left. But hopefullu we can keep the freshmen feeling like they’re invested in the future of the team and maybe they’ll be sophomores for us. But who knows. I guess it just depends on each individual.

The biggest differences I saw to last year: 1) Smart, heady plays when things got tough. Like QG taking the ball to the hoop to get fouled over and over. 2) Better ball movement, driving, and cutting. Really liked seeing Ty as a driving PG. 3) Experience and more of a team mentality. Seemed like a much more coachable group. Love to see the new guys bringing so much to the table and they all seem so humble.

I think Domask and Guerrier are going to be fan favorites by the end of the year.

Also. Love how hard this team plays but hope everyone is okay after today. I winced at some of the pileups and TSJs drives this early in the season.

The Illini are so talented and deep that there will be stiff competition for playing time. Turn in a few subpar performances, like Luke and Dain did tonight (both will presumably show better as the season progresses), and you will find yourself moving further down the bench. This competition will only make us better. BU and staff hit a home run with roster construction.

I love that we won, but that game was very similar to last year. If we made threes, we won. If we didn't, we lost. We got dominated inside and made threes and free throws (not well) to make up for it. I like all the options and depth, but I would like to see us getting to the rim more to hit the high percentage shots. Leaning on 41% shooting from three isn't going to cut it. I hope we can do more 8nside.
Very similar to my thoughts. Tonight I learned that the floor for this year’s team is likely the success the team had last year. That’s not a bad thing, and hopeful they can improve upon that. Certainly can see them being better, but the team had some very nice nonconference wins last year too.

On the plus side, TSJ and CH look like they could be better than last year. Love Domask’s game and he could be huge, and the other two transfers did some positive things.

On the minus side, I thought D was pretty bad overall. I didn’t see much to indicate that the worrying about the PG situation during the offseason was unfounded. Ty did some good things in first half, but his second half play left a lot to be desired. Goode had a rough go of it tonight. And of course there is the FT shooting.

Neither a plus or minus per se, but all the talk after first half about playing 12 and all our depth was a tad amusing. Second half BU went with more of the rotation we’re likely to see outside of the games against cupcakes. I will say that none of the freshmen looked overwhelmed during their limited time. And Harris like he seemingly has since his first game in an Illini uniform brought the energy.

This is a better “team” than we had last year, and I think will be far less frustrating than last year’s edition. Whether that means better results than last year, we’ll just have to watch and see. Looking forward to that.

Insiders think Domask will be the main backup PG on the year??

IMO, he looked fine.... but I think its highly likely after the season, we are talking about our lack of PGs. And I love Rodgers, BTW.
It seemed strategic today to avoid having whoever Dejuan Harris was guarding bring the ball up. Basically if he's guarding you, you go to the corner, stand, and wait for the ball to be brought up. In this case he was rarely ever on Domask, so he happened to bring the ball up often.

For me, if we would have lost by 7....the most important thing is still what's on film. Are we going to be ranked 15th because of the win?
Beating #1 should always move the needle, especially where you are ranked already. Maintaining? That’s another story. They controlled the tempo almost the whole game and deserve a pretty good jump. Just keep winning!

I think Lville was actually Domask's biggest hype man. I really like Domask in our closing lineup alongside TJ, Coleman, Guerrier, and Harmon
It's also 5 dudes who know how to knock down free throws late, which is refreshing.
Edit: turns out guerrier isn't as good a FT shooter as I thought. His shot looked pretty good.
