Really bad first half but a much much better 2nd. It's one game but I do think some questions need to be asked about the effort level tonight from some of our players in a season opener. I am really intrigued to hear Brad's postgame comments regarding CoHawk's play and Sencire not playing especially.

DGL, TSJ, and Moretti all had great games
CoHawk, Domask, and Harmon looked really off.

Overall winning by 28 while playing extremely flat for a half is a good sign, even against a really bad team, but I did not expect us to come out playing that poorly in the opener. Very strange stuff.

Maybe the girls team can come in and show the boys how to make free throws. This has been a shortcoming every game and is going to cost us wins if we don't improve.

To be fair, for all intents and purposes other than record, the KU game was the season opener. I can kind of understand a drop in energy after that leading into a cupcake game (even if I'd rather that not happen).

1. Depth paid off. When you are dealt 12 cards to 7...you will usually be able to put 5 together and win.
2. DGL played well in his first game at SFC and has an impressive vertical. If he is patient and works hard he may have a Darrell Griffith type collegiate future. He will have some talented, albeit young, bigs to feed to next year and needs to find ways to get them the ball when teams try to shut him down.
3. Free throw shooting is inexcusable.
4. Every team will suffer from horrendous starts like this one the llini had tonight. Defense can negate getting in a hole and should be the focus from the beginning but defensive blunders added to the suffering. So why did the Illini win? See #1.

If I could change one thing, I would like to have seen Hamlin play the game with only 2 fouls total and see what the Illini could do to counter. The inside game seemed to disappear when he was playing. Good for him!!!

Agreed, though I will add the caveat that if this is your senior season and you're looking to get conference awards and drafted, you can't come out in a season opener like CoHawk did tonight. He was playing like with such low energy and effort that I sincerely hope he was sick, because that's just unacceptable, especially for a senior. It's one thing to play poorly, it's another to play like you would rather be anywhere else.

Depth will be such an asset for the Illini this year.......................BTW , I noticed Sencire didn't play tonight ....Is he injured ??

DGL was fantastic all around with 18 points and great defense................
TSJ with 16 points , but was off on his FT's.....................
Hansberry is a rebounding machine and I was happy that he nailed that 3...............So was BU...............
Goode with three 3 pointers and a solid floor game..................
Gurrier is a tough dude and loved the dunk at the end............
47 points from the Illini bench.............that supports our depth which will be a bonus when we start the conference play.................

I have to ask ...........what was up with cohawk at that one timeout in the first half ??...........TA was trying to talk to him but cohawk was gesturing towards the huddle and not listening to TA............

waiting for BU and the post game radio interview............

slow start and no rebounding early on with lack of effort............
Domask was good ...............
Goode was good..........
DGL was great..........had a great week of practice................dynamic scorer but we have to teach him where the lines are for out of bounds...LOL
1 offensive rebound from our starters....................not good...............
Sencire is redshirting this year.......................answers that question..................
Hansberry with 8 rebounds in 14 minutes means he needs more playing time...................
we have a lot of depth and it shows.....................
Oakland will shoot a lot of 3's on Friday........Rocket Watts is on their team..................

NL # 3 and I enjoyed the game immensely and I immensely enjoyed her wearing her cheerleader outfit.......She's a die hard Illini now and loves every Illini game played no matter what sport........She really really does.....................

Illini start the season off right and now onto Friday for the next game...........

We will be seeing you then......................we really really will.........................

Any insight on what Hawkins was yelling about?
No. We were all kind of puzzled by that. During one time out a couple coaches had to pull him aside and calm him down. Seemed really strange and out of the blue.

The best soundbite I overheard was toward the end of the game as Goode was leaving the floor, BU laid into him pretty good for (I think) not closing out on his shooter. "I don't care! No excuses! There's always an excuse with you! .... You gave one up last game too!"

His teammates on the bench busted his balls a little bit over it but then he was fine and standing up cheering for his team again. Anyone who's played for a fiery coach before knows that's just part of it.
