Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

No moral victories.

In saying that, we looked really good for the most part. Some really dumb mistakes and TSJ/Coleman did not have their best games.

Overall, this team is good enough to be a top 10 team this year. Some things to clean up for sure though
can I ask what you see in this team that makes you think we can be anywhere near the top 10? that would mean we're better than every Underwood team besides 2021.

We need Hawkins to get the mentality , confidence and ability to play smart like Brian Cook did. He has the ability but after 3 years I am not chucking that Kool aid anymore. We will have his moments but we need that on a consistent basis. I think TSJ and Domask are the only 2 I expect that fro.
It’s all between the ears with him. At this point, he is who he is. I don’t think the lightbulb is going to switch on. Gonna be grateful for his good moments this year because we all know when he’s on, we can play with anyone.

Gary A gave us nothing on the offensive end. Was hoping for a little production, he and Hawkins missed some wide open 3’s. why Hawkins won’t take the guys that he has in the paint and shoot over them, I Don’t know. A lot of time he has it there and is the best option to shoot but he passes out for a worse shot at the end of the clock. Plus he and Shannon’s passing left a lot to be desired tonight. A lack of a pg tonight did not lose us the game. Carelessness with passes was the main culprit plus not getting loose balls. Missed layups, no help defense or not getting back on d in the 1st half were killers.
I would prefer Hawk to play to his strengths and take open shots and not go one on one. He us a career 42 percent shooter and 27 percent from 3. If he plays great D and makes quality passes and takes open shots then thats what I want from him. He is not a high percentage back to the basket scorer. He just isn't. Domask is our #2 and we need Ty and Hawk to play to their strengths and not force things. Quincy, Domask. and Goode didn't play perfect but they played well and didn't force things. If we do that as a team we will be fine. Quincy was 0 for 3 and DGL was too but only maybe 1 shot from DGL was a bad shot. Ty didn't take any bad shots he never does..missing a shot is one thing but taking a bad shot or dumb pass is another. Its clear who does that most often

When you consider how some of our best players played today (Hawkins and Guerrier mostly), I’m pretty encouraged from the macro outlook of that game.

I still think if Ty takes that layup this game had a real chance to end differently. That was extremely frustrating.

Fun game. Goode & Domask probably can’t play much better than that. Shannon & Hawkins are what they are. Everyone knows the roster hole that limits this squads ceiling. Jay Wright called it out at halftime of the IL v Arky game explaining that you can’t win big if your leading assist man is your 6’10” big man. We will see how far a roster replete with forwards can advance. Should be fun to watch.

Our top 2 guys had fairly bad nights(10 turnovers) and we played them close. No doubt, Marquette is a better team, but we hung and will get better.

It seemed to me that only TSJ was quick enough to defend against their quick guards. When they got a step on our guy, it opened up a lot of easy shots and passes to score. The ball handling of our guards seemed pretty good. As someone mentioned, why won't CH elevate on his man and shoot it on those 10-15 footers?

So shooting 2 for 16 the last 11 minutes doesn’t worry anyone?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this was a good game despite the outcome. My college group chat is crazy doom and gloom about the loss. But we played 17+ competitive minutes against the 4th ranked team in the country and a few bad plays reversed and the outcome is different. I’m happy with this game and am excited to watch this team this year

Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda! So glad this game wasn't in March. But we know we could have won this game. Marquette is a very good team, but we can compete right there with them if we can get our act together. Coleman has got to get his head right. He acted and played frutrated most of the night. I love what he brings on D, but he cant be such a headcase. He avoided the huddle most of the night and seemed to be pouting. We need him to be more of a leader. Second, I know guys will have off nights, but Shannon jusr didnt finish well tonight. If he did we win. Domask and Goode were solid, just wish we could set them up better. When we rotated the ball well and hit them in the corner it was lethal. I loved Ty's play but wish he was more of a shooter. Zero points from Guerrier isnt helpful either. Thought the crowd and the Crush was very good, but hats off to Marquette as they played legit. We saw a very good team tonight. No real complaints about the refs. Lets hope we learn and grow drom this. Go Illini.

It’s a crappy place to spectate. Half the seats are benches, it’s a death trap in a panic situation, and there are way too few toilets. And it’s ugly and it’s in New Jersey.
Yep I walked around that floor when my daughter registered at RU 10 years ago and was unimpressed.
I can't believe they still play in that dump, it's not a BT level place IMO.

Haven’t read through the thread, but have a question. On Dainja’s goal tending call, as the ball clearly was not going to hit the rim, if he’d grabbed it instead of swatting it, it would’ve been a clean rebound, right?

Just finished the game (step kiddo had a choir concert but both my folks got elite seats for the game so 🤷‍♂️).

Quick hit thoughts -

Marquette is better than Kansas by a lot. Extremely disciplined and nasty on defense. They will destroy a lot of teams this year if they stay healthy on that starting five.

Kolek is a beast. Full stop. So smart, such a good player for his size around the rim.

A few bad shots here and there cost us. I really wish Ty (or TJ) had gone for the gimme instead of the whip pass out to Domask late but it's a what-if.

Coleman is a damn menace as a help defender and facilitator.

TJ wants to be POY and it shows. He is just next level this year.

Our ceiling is higher than Marquette. Some discombobulation in the first half killed momentum but we are deep, way more unselfish than last year, and we had some atrocious luck on beautiful open 3s.

He's a high percentage back to the basket scorer but rarely ends up in that position.
And wow Domask has a lethal turnaround from the ft line. If only we could get him iso'd there more.

the FAU game is a borderline must win imo. I don't see any way we win at Tennessee and I don't think there's gonna be that many opportunities in Big ten play. a lot of teams look bad.
I would agree. Crazier things have happened, but winning at Tennessee will be very difficult. So, I guess splitting those two are crucial, along with beating Mizzou. Otherwise, it feels like we will have the label of not having a "signature" win with the way the B10 looks right now. Only opportunity would be taking one from Purdue. Like I mentioned earlier, this was a lost opportunity. But a few remain.

I think even pinning it would've been a goaltend the second it hit the backboard but 🤷‍♂️

No he is not. Hawk is a 42 percent shooter from the field. Kenny Norman or Deon Thomas was but Hawk just needs to stick.to what he is good at and get better at what he needs to. That's what I admire about Rodgers. He us getting better in practice before he try to do what he needs to do better in games

It's on my bucket list but only because I already suffered through the barn in Minnesota. That place is a smelly butthole of a disinterested fan base.

What would Sencire Harris on Kolek have looked like?
Maybe something like this??
