Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

Domask seemed to create really well, loved whenever he had the ball in his hands.

That's kind of my problem with this team ... I don't want Domask at PG ... I want him on the wing with TJ ... I hope Domask gets more comfortable with the ball in his hands but I wish he didn't have to ...

I watch RayJ at Baylor ... Alexander/Ashworth at Creighton ... Dajuan Harris at Kansas ... Kolek at Marquette ... And there is NO reason we do not have a kid like that ... We haven't had one since Trent walked out the door ...

Given some of the absolutely doodoo basketball I'm watching in this Kansas-Kentucky matchup, I am absolutely baffled at the tears over this one.
Marquette had an absolutely unreal game out of Kolek.
That kid is gonna make himself some bank.

Too much Tyler Kolek and too many mistakes and empty possessions down the stretch. Not going to beat anyone. much less a top 5 team playing the kind of low IQ basketball we did in crunch time.

Marquette is a very good experienced squad that played like a team that's been through a lot of battles together vs our squad that's still trying to integrate a lot of moving parts 3 games in. Yes the lack of a PG is something that will stick out like a sore thumb all year long but it's something we're going to have to live with and find a way through it as the season progresses.

I'm bummed but not mad.

Marquette is good. I'm probably in the minority, but I think they're a little overrated right now. But still a quality, experienced team. No shame in losing a hard fought game to them.

It's just disappointing because we had a chance to steal that one and the reasons we didn't were largely in our control. Whether we improve upon those things will be the difference between a good and a great season.

I am worried about Coleman though. I've defended him on here since his sophomore year but he's just kind of a liability right now. I feel bad for him. I've never seen our crowd turn on one of our own players like they did with him tonight. Hope he can turn it around because we need him.
Hard to say they are overrated...when we can beat #1 Kansas but not Marquette

The effort was there. Most/a lot of the time.

But so were the random lost possessions and terrible shot selection (see: desperation 3s).

We didn’t look too bad for most of the time against #4, but were bailed out by some hero ball shots - not necessarily good offensive.

In fact, our offense looks like just pickup ball. Too much standing around on the 3 pt line. Set defense was good. Great at times. Transition defense was bad. Terrible at times.

I’ll close with: what is up with Coleman? Stop worrying and whining about every call and just play basketball. He’s way too in his head. Just score the dang ball. Do you only shoot 3s now?

P.S. This wasn’t Dainja’s type of game. DGL was trying a bit too hard. Need more Domask.

Please stop using the five out offense. It's bad. It's worse than @Lord Voldemort. We needed Dain down low to implement some sort of pressure and inside out game.

Other than that, we played a top 5 team close the whole game and had a real shot. Clean it up, if we can. I've always been on the Coleman Hawkins train, but I'm hopping off now. Terrible attitude. Bad decisions.

I think this is where the angst is coming in. Lost of the same problems popping up that we were hoping would be solved. Although we hit our free throws.
Exactly what I was just thinking. Losing plays down the stretch.
Virginia, at Maryland, at Iowa, at IU, at Purdue, PSU in the BTT, Michigan at home (despite the win). All very winnable games in which we simply don’t execute at critical times while our opponent does. I’m just not seeing an answer this year either. TSJ still no feel for game tempo. It shouldn’t be his job….
That one possession where it was out of a timeout, Coleman gets it up top and crosses up Shannon with the pass on the wing (he caught it, albeit very awkwardly) - that was still part of the motion that you JUST DREW UP in the timeout and the second and third guys to touch the ball aren’t on the same page. This is their 40th game together.

Hawkins still very frustrating to watch. Both teams had a ton of effort but massive differences in basketball IQ.
Yeah. Domask looked how I expected him to be and I think he will end up being the secondary scorer this team needs and Goode actually shot the ball well on some volume which is good but someone else needs to show up.

Guerrier did a Damonte Williams impression on offense. Hawkins is still playing like tall Curbelo and nobody else stepped up. Really need more offensively from Harmon or DGL.

Good game (mostly) against a very good team. Nice to see Goode arrive, and the Domask we saw vs Kansas.

I don’t agree with all the “no-PG” hand wringing. I thought Ty was fantastic. I did think Coleman did too much point-forward, which is any at all.
Coleman needs to start being a dirty work type guy instead of being a focal point of the offense. That part of the offense needs to be reworked.

Shannon, Domask, and Rodgers are capable of facilitating. Don't need tall Curbelo playing point forward. Also, Harmon and DGL should be capable of facilitating so there shouldn't be a need for it with Coleman unlike last year.

Game was lost at the 8 minute mark when we walked back on D and MU scored another layup. Brad called a TO and we never sniffed the lead again.
Great post my friend. I was sitting at that end of the court and couldn't believe how four Illini fell asleep
and let the Marquette player get behind them. Great teams don't make those kind of mental mistakes.

Man, I will be happy if we never see Kolek again. He's a great player but we made him look like he's All-NBA... like Good Curbelo on steroids.

We worked so hard for our points and then we let them score easy baskets time after time... we seriously have to do a better job guarding the pick-and-roll and guarding in transition.

Still, happy with the effort. Luke and Domask and Shannon had pretty good games. A lot to clean up but Marquette is a good team and we've got a great chance again coming up soon for a quality win against FAU.
and Tennessee who has beat 2 our big ten brethren 1 in which was preseason in Michigan state

It's almost unbearable ... He can point fingers all he wants but he has been a problem so far this year ...
So far he is playing his way down the draft boards. I don’t think NBA scouts would be impressed by the tape so far. I know he has the talent, but the maturity and self-control aren’t always there. Still love the dude.

My #1 issue ... Do we have anybody who can truly go get one besides TJ ...

I am sitting here watching Creighton and think why do we not have a couple guards like they've had/have ...
The one hope of this on the roster is DGL (MAYBE Harmon since he played on ball some at Utah Valley but not sure I see it with him). I hope Brad continues to give DGL run. We could really use him with some experience under his belt come March

It seems to me with Brad putting Hawkins out front away from the basket it would open up some opportunities for Quincy to get some post ups. With how strong a rebounder he has been I would think with his size he might be able to pick up a few baskets down there. Of course we have to get him the ball down there. Domask made 2 or 3 good cuts to the basket that only once someone saw and that was a terrible pass that got stolen.

I'm going to be real for a sec- DGL is raw. Very raw. It is extremely difficult to come into the B10 as a freshman and have success in conference. Yes, you can look good against directional non-con opponents, but I think the people who are expecting a lot from this season are overly hopeful for something that is fairly rare. He seems to have athleticism and drive and that can certainly take him far, but based on what we've seen from him thus far, he's probably going to need a year and an offseason to cook.

DGL has a super high ceiling but tonight was a good heat check against a phenomenal experienced backcourt. I don't have a huge problem with most of his shots but we could've gotten better ones on those possessions. This isn't a loss that is going to hurt us in March, so I think those minutes were worth it.

Last year ... Between Skyy and Mayer ... Coleman kind of got a pass from me but it is year 4 ... He is not mature ... He never takes responsibility ... He chucks stupid shots ... Tries to hit home runs instead of singles ...

I want to see more Hansberry going forward and less Hawkins if he continues to play like this ...
Coleman just is who he is. When you have somebody exhibit the same behavior for three years without showing much of any signs of growth on that front, it's just hard to expect them to do so in that 4th year. Fans like to say he has all the tools, and physically he does have many or at least parts of many, but the mental side is just as important and he's missing that part. And it's not even that uncommon for this to happen- Matt Mayer falls in the same camp. Or if you want to go extreme, someone like Jereme Richmond. It's just how a person is wired. Coleman's Coleman. So like him, hate him, there's just not much one can change about him at this point.

Not to play devils advocate here, but if we had Sincere on Kolek for even some of this game…. I think we see a different result.

What’s Coleman’s role on the team? I think one of BUs problems is his ”system” requires players to excel simultaneously at too many roles. What would make everyone happy with Coleman? He’s already a great defender, and rebounder. He was top 10 in the B1G last year in 2pt FG%, and assist %.

He’s frustrating because he’s been put in a role that requires him to have PG skills while also shooting 35% from 3. It’s an unrealistic expectation.

These are his ranks in BIG10 last year:
13th - rebounds
12th - offensive rebounds
17th - defensive rebounds
15th - assists
19th - steals
9th - blocks
8th - 2pt FG%
7th - Defensive win shares
14th - defensive rating

That is a great player right there he’s just being expected to excel beyond his strengths. Its on the coaches, imo.
