Absolutely. As pointed out by another poster, every coach in America's 2 pt. Decision chart shows that you go for two when you are down 5, especially in the last 2-3 minutes of the game. And the last attempt was 100% necessary to try and tie the game.
There were multiple times this season where we went for 2 early ish in the game and it turned out to be a mistake based on how the game played out.

Yesterday isn’t an example of the 2pt problem. But it was an example of the other concern I had. And that was using timeouts erroneously.

I agree with the conservative play calling being disastrous nearly every time (it’s been that way for the entirety of Bielama’s tenure here). However, I don’t think there’s a coach in the world that would agree with this take on 2-pts.

Yes, it’s unfortunate that in a couple games this year, being down by 1 or 2 hurt us after failing to get a previous 2-pt conversion, but going for 2 has been the right call every time we’ve done it this year. We just suck at converting them it seems.
Disagree wholeheartedly on this. Again, you’ve got to understand the offensive tempo. In a defensive struggle, it might be the right call. But when the offenses are humming, there’s so many future mathematical possibilities. Obviously they weren’t the right call yesterday because we didn’t kick the extra point twice and lost by two extra points.

That last attempt wasn’t the issue. Of course you go for it there… no one’s arguing that. But going for two on the first TD of the fourth quarter (which succceeded) did not take into account there would be 5 more scoring drives the rest of the quarter. If, on that score, you take the one instead of the two, Illinois could’ve ultimately been in a situation where the final drive would’ve only needed 7 points instead of 8, based on how the 4th quarter scores unfolded.

Now obviously, you can’t know exactly how they’ll unfold, but you can be aware of the offensive tempo and recognize that, in a high scoring game, an early fourth quarter score will likely be followed by several more.

I cant believe that Toledo might be our only ranked win this year
Not like there were many opportunities for ranked wins. Of the 12 teams on the schedule, only Toledo, Penn State, and Iowa are ranked. During the season, the Illini only played two ranked teams (Penn State and Iowa). This was a very soft schedule, and 5-7 is an extreme disappointment, especially considering the B1G West had three new coaches (Illini lost all of them). It will only get harder moving forward.

I believe Maryland was ranked when we beat them, not that it matters now.

Maryland was actually never ranked this season. They got up to #26 in both polls the week they played Ohio State (week prior to Illini game).

Most amazing, Iowa only faced one ranked opponent all season (Penn State) and got spanked around the field. The B1G West is without a doubt one of the worst divisions in football. In the B1G West, only one team has a ranked win (when Minnesota won in Iowa). The conference overall is downright terrible this year. The infusion of the west coast teams will make the league much stronger.

For the most part I'm a bit more optimistic about next season. I still see 6-8 wins looking at next year's schedule, but it is based on a lot of the good part of "what if." Assuming we don't lose a bunch to the transfer portal, we're returning a lot of guys, some who of who showed flashes in the 2nd half of the season. Defense needs the obvious improvement, and some of the o-lineman that Bielema nabbed his first two recruiting classes are going to need to step up. Running back should be a strength next season, but wide receiver will be a big question mark if IW leaves. I don't know if any of the current guys in the room outside of Elzy (who vanished for poor play) has the breakaway speed the group needs. One guy who could help is Iowa Central CC and Illinois commit Mario Sanders won his conference's(?) award for offensive player of the year. https://www.ictritons.com/sports/fball/2023-24/releases/20231124wsfmhj

Wilcher is pretty fast. Also calil valentine the RB commit is someone they could think about trying at WR and I think he ran like a 10.8 in track

// PLAYER APPRECIATION //

This season didn’t go how many of us expected. After last year‘s surprising 8 wins, most of us expected a bowl at minimum this year and a lot of us, myself included, wanted to see 7/8 wins.

So of course I’m disappointed in this seasons outcome, especially the outcome of the final game. We all are.

That being said, even though I’m disappointed as a fan, I feel crushed for the players, especially the seniors who just played their final game.

These guys fought their asses off all season long and I’m damn proud of them. Nobody wanted to win more than they did.

I don’t know if any of the players ever read this board, but if they do, I just want to say:

Thank you.

Thank you for being an Illini. Thank you for representing the orange & blue and busting your tails off for our entertainment.

Even though we didn‘t get the final result we all wanted, this will be a season I’ll never forget.

Casey Washington, you’re a warrior bro.
Johnny Newton, can’t wait to watch you on Sundays.
Isaiah Williams, you turned into a damn fine receiver and I hope to watch you again next year.

For my Illini brethren, the future is bright.

Should have listened. I said Toledo would go 11-1 and be a top half team on your schedule.
Toledo played its 2nd best game of the season against you guys, and I think the Illini gave a top 5 effort of their season vs. UT.

The Rockets are likely to not be in the CFP rankings this Tuesday. It's a shame because there's no proof of how to Soundly beat Toledo, unlike SMU. Tulane and Liberty have better resumes so it is what it is. I hope Toledo to get Rutgers, NW or Wisconsin in the Detroit bowl. Minny sucks and ending a teams season to finish 5-8 would probably make Toledo look worse honestly.

And if it wasn't for Minnesota making a bowl at 5-7 the majority of teams in the division would not be playing in a bowl.

Just a random example again of how being on the right network is essential for good TV ratings (and good TV ratings are essential in today's landscape!!). This is Illinois vs. Indiana TV ratings with some variables

OVERALL AVERAGE
Illinois: 993k viewers
Indiana: 1.26 million viewers

AVERAGE EXCLUDING OSU/MICH/PSU
Illinois: 770k viewers
Indiana: 396k viewers

AVERAGE ON BTN/FS1
Illinois: 650k viewers
Indiana: 396k viewers

368K VIEWERS FOR ILLINOIS/INDIANA ON BTN
Illinois: 43.4% lower than Illinois BTN/FS1 average
Indiana: 7.1% lower than Indiana BTN/FS1 average

Notice how the last two are the same for Indiana, lol ... they only got off of BTN/FS1 when they were playing Ohio State (CBS), Michigan (FOX) or Penn State (CBS). If one were to just pull a list of average viewers per team, Indiana would look more valuable than Illinois to the Big Ten. And yet the most surface level analysis reveals that Illinois is very clearly bringing more "base" viewers in our "ratings floor," if you will.

Additionally, take just two examples of some of our better ratings once you exclude OSU/MICH/PSU, and it is clear that we are not just "mooching" off of other teams' fans, either. Below are our ratings vs. Nebraska and Maryland and then what they drew in comparable TV times...

1.36 million vs. Nebraska (Friday night on FS1)
- 900k vs. Michigan State on FS1
- 560k vs. Northwestern on BTN

1.14 million vs. Maryland (NBC)
- 665k vs. Charlotte on NBC

I really do believe Illinois has immense potential as a valuable asset for the Big Ten when it comes to TV ratings. Like anyone else, we rely on being on a good channel at a good time, but we are in no way, shape or form a "drag" on any programs that already get great ratings, and we hold our own vs. other programs who theoretically "should" get better TV ratings than we do given how bad we have been in recent history. I would truly love to see how those numbers would change if we could ever string together winning seasons, lol ... because I think the fans are there, they're theoretically more than ready, but they're hesitant.

I have already moved on to BB. Just like I moved on to FB after the ARK game in March. But, looking at the year in review one final time, I am laughing at the fact that the winning/losing margin in 8 of the 12 games was; 2, 6, 3, 4, 1, 3, 2, and 2. I don't know what that means? But, how the hell did Purdue score 44 points on us? I made it to 2 games, PSU and IND. The PSU game told me that the defense would be OK is the offense didn't get them killed. I got to see the stadium record of 500+ yards passing in one of the most exciting games I have ever witnessed. I can put this on my memory shelf of being present at that game along with Howard Griffith's 8 TD rushing game and the ILL-NU 0-0 tie. These fit nicely with the BB comeback over AZ inthe Regional final. So I got that goin for me. Which is nice.

And the last 3 losses against Wiscy, Iowa, and NW were by a combined 8 points in games that all went down to the wire. Flip one of those games and we would be bowling.
It's such a conflict of emotions. The floor has been raised, we are right in these games, we aren't far off from an 8 win team, we really are probably building a program the right way. At the same time, so many frustrating shots in the foot, self inflicted wounds, why can't we just tighten the screws up and things would be that much better.

A lot of parallels between this team and the basketball team. Things have improved dramatically, still lots of frustrating underachievement. But I wouldn't dare trade things for what is in the mystery box. (Unless we are talking Indy's boy Sean Miller...)

I have been seeing this "build it the right way" since Lovie was here. What does it mean? To me the right way is winning, I don't care how you get there

Was anyone else impressed with how Iowa adapted after DeJean went down before our game? They held McCarthy to 137 yds passing and MI to 213 total yds last nite.

Contrast that to how we had difficulties when Johnny was not on the field and replacing most of our back end. Need to keep stacking classes, developing the talent with a consistent identity, creating depth and a winning way of doing things. The Ws will come....
