Purdue 83, Illinois 78 Postgame

I love Ty but he can’t be on the floor with Edey when we rematch
I don’t know. I think we had some good action with forcing Edey into a PnR, might work better with TSJ. I think Domask just works better in iso vs PnR.

I’m just shocked that we couldn’t get stops or rebound with Ty out there. His +/- is going to be ugly but I’m interested to see that impact chart that’s been hitting the home page

Frustrating game to watch. Know Illinois is better than they showed
Game score was closer than the game felt
Great fight
Domask is very very good
Quincy played good
Hawkins played pretty good but always leaves fans scratching their head like End of first half 3 point foul, travel call down the stretch
Unfortunately that is the type of defense the big 10 is going to play with Rodgers in the game
Didn’t like Hawkins constantly switching onto smith. Most times they didn’t need to switch
Horrible officiating that benefited Illinois down the stretch with the flagrant 1.

Question for the board. I understand that Hawkins give us the best chance offensively, but should Dain had gotten a more mins? Especially in the early/middle of the 2nd half when Edey was getting going. If nothing else a bigger body to throw at Edey and I would assume he'd help much more on the boards.
Absolutely not, he looked bad

Honestly if TSJ can come back with enough time to get into mid season form and produce like an all American, the team having to learn to play without him could end up making them even more dangerous come March.

Didn't really necessarily show today but it's forcing Harmon to find his offensive role off the bench, plus see more from guys like Guerrier, Goode, and Rodgers.

I see a team with two primary scoring options in Domask and Shannon and then a ton of complimentary scorers in Guerrier, Hawkins, Goode, and Harmon that can create a ton of headaches for anyone trying to gameplan for them.
Shannon still has access to all team facilities, so he is still getting better every day. And without having to go to practices or games he actually has more time to improve than an active player would.

Especially against Edey I would have loved to see Ty have the ball in his hands off the dribble. Let him cross up Edey a couple times and run him in circles, make him work and maybe get a foul on him. Giving up the ball and sitting the short corner is playing exactly into Purdue's hands.
But Edey just has to stand 5 feet from the hoop. Ty isn’t going to have room to operate.

Ty should play when Edey is on the bench. But he is basically unplayable when Edey is in and guarding him. It’s just a bad matchup for him.

The F1 on Jones was an awful call ...

Someone told me that Edey had not even been called for a foul the previous 3 games ... He was called for 4 tonight ... And he should have had 5 ... That one in the lane on the Goode boxout that they called on Goode was an awful call ...
Reading the Purdue boards, they are complaining about the Zebras more than this board. The stripes were bad, but both ways.

So proud of this team. Just tough and gritty. So many would have given up after down by 20. These guys kept believing and fighting. Had a few missed calls (2 out of bounds calls) and got out hustled early. Also missed several bunnies in 1st half. Didn't really get any breaks until the last 5 minutes. The offensive rebounding by Purdue and the insane 7 for 10 from 3 in the 1st half was brutal. But get back to a 1 possession game at the end was very impressive. Loved how Domask shook things off and kept going at it. He's a great leader in that regard. And how tough is Guerrier? What a stud. Hats off to the Boilers. They're a really good team. But so are we. Go Illini!!

Rodgers is gonna be unplayable against Purdue/Edey. but im not too worried about him long term. teams are gonna drop off him, but no other teams have 7'4 behemoths on their team in conference, so he'll at least be able to shoot floaters/layups over other centers

On one hand: This was the #1 team at their place without our best player

On the other: I'm so tired of moral victories

I mean… easily could also be called a hook and hold on Luke. He literally has Edey’s arm with both hands. Yes there is a lot of contact there, but that amount of contact goes uncalled quite often in the lane.
I think he had his hands on Edey's arm to keep himself from getting hurt!

A few takeaways:
1) Those upset with the officiating are woefully mistaken. It is inevitable for there to be some bad calls, but the free throws were nearly equal, Edey did actually get called for some stuff, and for most of the game, they called it consistently. They are not why we lost.

2) Ty is insanely valuable to our team, but tip of the cap to Painter for exploiting Ty. Camping Edey in the paint hurt our other players more than it did Ty, as we couldn't get anything at the rim and it made offensive rebounding nearly impossible. I know Ty can shoot a midrange jumper, but he's gotta do it. 100% this is a confidence thing that he has been able to turn into a habit. Can we break it?

3) The score didn't indicate that Purdue rocked us for most of the game. However, I was impressed by our team in moments throughout the game.

4) Underwood will preach rebounding, and I will too. But much of the discrepancy was that we were doubling Edey. When you double, it's almost like being in a zone. It's SOOOOO much harder to find a body. It also leads to skip passes which if those shots are missed, they often go to the side of someone like Edey. The stuff that will piss off Underwood is some of the early effort rebounds we missed because Purdue just wanted it more.

BU just said on radio post game that Amani's back locked up before the game and he was unavailable for the game .....said we could have used him and his rebounding skills.........I wondered why he didn't get any tick..........

I will give my opinion about the refs and no one can change my mind......They were terrible......missed about 8-10 3 second calls on Edey........You can't just say the fouls were even up.....it's when and how they were called....Edey should have fouled out by halftime with the number of over the back fouls that weren't called..........

We got off to our worst 1st half start of the year.....That's NOT debatable.........We got lost on D numerous times and we all know we are a better D than the first half performance tonight.........Our offense in the 1st half wasn't much better..........

We finally caught our breath and after trailing 20-4 in the 1st half we outscored them 74-63.........I am going to watch the replay later on tonight and try to figure out what the hell went wrong starting the game off......

But to say the refs didn't affect the game is shortsighted at best and without merit at worst.......

I agree that all posters have a right to disagree with me and I will fight for that right........I just want other posters to respect my opinion as I do yours...................................

With TSJ , we win the game tonight.....no doubt in my mind..........With TSJ in the rematch at home , I say we win by double digits......TSJ is a first team All American........And we clawed back with hustle and heart to only lose by 5 , on the road , without TSJ and another inept reffing performance...............

As always ,. I love this team and their maturity and character.......We all should be proud of this team and the adversity they are going through right now without TSJ........

I am disgusted with the posts I read in the game thread and will refrain from posting or reading them again for the rest of the year.....that is my choice and opinion and no one will change my mind so don't try.......you're wasting your time to do so.......

The beloved played their butts off tonight , even when the cards were stacked against them and the odds were low that they could even make it respectable at numerous times in the game.....but they didn't quit.....And I won't quit either.....if you want to quit , then go ahead ....we won't miss you ..............not one little bit......

JMHO...................................

BROTHER. A hook and hold requires a HOOK (Goode's arms are straight up) and HOLD. Edey elbows Goode in the head then hooks around Goode's straight arm.

You could make a legit argument a hook and hold should be called on Edey here...

That would be 2 (TWO) flagrants in one play for the elbow to the head, and hook and hold... but instead Goode is called for a phantom foul.
