So the judge really just said "The previous play is under review, and I'm gonna take a couple days to think about it. We'll resume this game next week sometime, whenever I feel the time is right."
Which means that the suspension is the "call on the field" and she needs clear and indisputable evidence to overturn it? I know the football team's luck with reviews, have to hope it's better on the basketball side.

The number of first round NBA picks (let alone lottery) who didn't play the last half of their senior season (or comparable if they're overseas) is probably very limited. I didn't find anything useful online and nothing is popping in to my crappy memory.
Michael Porter Jr missed virtually his whole senior season at Mizzou after back surgery. He played in two postseason games, coming off the bench for limited minutes. Was taken 14th overall

But there's no guarantee additional games this year increases his draft position. There is probably a negative correlation between college games played and draft position (for drafted players)
Correct. Will be a difficult case to win. Case within a case, similar a legal malpractice matter. Would require a battle of experts.

Well, 4 of the top 5 picks in last year's draft didn't play college at all...

pretty much, except she is saying, I want to take more time to review and give a detailed Order. This is very common in a case as complicated as this one and in a situation where the judge has only had a few days to review the pleadings and case law not to mention hear arguments just today.
Even though this is the only case before our most honorable Illiniloyalty Board, it's not the only one she and her staff are handling.

Yea and was also the #1 player in his class, the highest rated NBA prospect before the season, and one of the dirtier HS mixtapes to exist.

Not necessarily bad news…
A small victory, actually. I thought there was a very good chance she would rule against TJ from the bench, given the weakness of the Title IX argument. It is at least possible she sees something in the alternative counts that gives TJ some tiny chance of prevailing.

Not gonna bet on that, but the light is still flickering, however faintly.

It is extremely common for federal judges to read the written submissions, hear oral argument, and then “take those under advisement” before issuing a written opinion days or weeks later (I would expect days in this situation given the urgency).

I am sure that all of the IAALs on here would be FAR more interested in hearing about any questions that the judge posed to the lawyers, or any comments she made, during the 90 minutes of oral argument — those often provide some insight on the way a judge is thinking about the issue.

Does anyone feel good about this?
Kind of what I would expect. I don't think these issues are clear cut. And the judge will want to confer with her team and reach a well reasoned decision. I'd think the written decision will come next week given the nature of the relief sought. The longer it takes the worse it looks for TSJ at least for the TRO phase. Hopefully the judge has some U of I clerks helping out.

there is just no comparison for a 23 year old who went back to school to improve his stock compared to a 18 year old phenom
It's the only situation I could think of where a player didn't play most of his senior season and got drafted in the first round

I wouldn't take "she's considering it!" or "we're screwed" from today's process. Plenty of folks mentioned earlier there was a high likelihood that no decision was going to happen today. I'd say stick to your priors, but some of you are too far on the edge for comfort.
Do judges reach out to their peers or anyone else to get feedback on a decision like this?
