Illinois has a much more impressive overall history by ALMOST every metric. And winning a title isn’t everything … Oregon isn’t a better program than us all-time just because they win a National Championship in the ‘40s, lmao.

I'm really nervous about this one. It's human nature to relax a bit mentally after such a big, hard fought win yesterday. Fingers crossed we will come out ready to play well enough to win handily.

Friendly reminder that we have over twice as many Final Fours as mighty Maryland! They do have a title, but the vast majority of their sense of entitlement comes from a 3-year stretch. Illinois has a much more impressive overall history by ALMOST every metric. And winning a title isn’t everything … Oregon isn’t a better program than us all-time just because they win a National Championship in the ‘40s, lmao.

Let’s smoke ‘em.
On this topic, my buddy who played for Maryland in the mid-'60s once told me that he got chatting with Gary Williams at a player alumni event. Gary apparently remarked that winning an NC was so incredibly difficult and that so many disparate elements had to align over a season and in the tourney that he was amazed he'd been able to achieve it.

It starts, of course, with talent on the floor, which is why it has been easier for certain programs.

Oh, and fully agreed on "Let's smoke 'em"

This has been Underwood's best coaching job. I was so underwhelmed by last year and was really not looking forward to this season. Keep it up
I think BU leaned a lesson and really grew from last year's debacle. Sometimes, through adversity and conflict, arises a true understanding of what one wants to accomplish.

Knowing what he wants and growing accustomed to this new way of getting players, BU may reach the "elite" status one day. I feel he's more comfortable and more secure about what he's doing--you can see it in his demeanor. Ironically, he's not as bombastic (although I am OK with it when needed) this year on the sideline, yet, more enthusiastic and positive in the press room. He's even sitting more during games.

Get used to this because this type of year (Top Ten) will be more the norm in the future.

I honestly think Brad felt two conflicting things after the Houston loss:

1) A rightful sense of immense pride that we went from cellar dwellers when he got here to #1 seeds and Big Ten championship banners.

2) Frustrated that, as far as postseason play goes, all we had to show for an awesome 3-year run was one cancelled Tournament and two Second Round losses.

With all five starters set to graduate or move on, I think he made the call to try to keep this thing rolling with as much talent as possible. And to be fair, for a little while there it really did look like “Illinois “doesn’t rebuild, it just reloads.” Unfortunately, team chemistry did us in, and I think this year Brad is more grounded, more confident and more seasoned than ever. And it’s showing!

I haven't been to College Park, but I have a hard time believing it's strip could be worse than College Station.
Haven’t been to College Station, but College Park is truly awful…I feel this may be the start of a classic Loyalty offshoot

College Station has always sounded like my own personal heII so, yeah, it very well could be worse. College Park is basically a highway with three bars and a strip mall with a Chipotle. Plus, due to the lovely laws in Maryland, you can't buy beer in grocery stores. Though, to its credit, it does now have a few more ugly buildings on that highway. It's sad for a major East Coast institution that's right outside of a major city.
I thought that the no liquor in the grocery store thing was only here in Montgomery County. I've lived here more than 18 years and I still can't fathom it.

I haven't been to College Station but just visited it on Google Street View. If the strip is on University Avenue, then IMO it gives College Park a run for its money but exceeds it in beauty by a nose. Perhaps the lesson is that any town beginning with "College" is aesthetically doomed.

Never been to Lubbock, either. Street View makes it look similarly bleak. I'm sadistically pleased that Bob Knight sought exile there at Texas Tech.

~ 30 years ago I worked with a senior guy in our company. He was a laconic Texan and I was pathetically trying to make conversation with him after we met. I asked where he was from originally and he said "Lubbock." I noted that all I knew about it was that Tech was located there. I asked him what else was in Lubbock.

I'll never forget his answer: "The horizon."

Still cracks me up.
Bloody hell! That cracked me up!

I had a good friend who moved to Lubbock from Alaska. Apparently there's a pretty good cardiology program in Lubbock, at which he worked. Said it was the only thing that kept him there.

EDIT to add: a few years later he moved to Fayetteville, AR which has a pretty nice campus. I lived in the area for a number of years.

I was in College Park nearly 20 years ago. The highlight was a Ruby Tuesday, iirc. I had never heard of one and can’t say I’ve seen one since.

Agree - And I think long gone are the days where you have a good 4-5 person prep class and wait 2-3 years for it to mature as upperclassmen. Too many transfers and things that can go wrong. The key is identifying the attitude (clear that Domask, Harmon, and Guerrier are about winning, not just scoring 15 a game for a contract). Can we keep finding the harmons and Felizs who relatively are not these huge portal fights.

That’s why although I don’t want a guy like DGL to transfer out, it’s not as concerning if it happens. I hope he develops and plays well enough to warrant the playing time on a top 15 team. If not, I’m confident to find a guy with our DNA.

I don’t anticipate much time for Moretti here but if we get up enough maybe he can get some tick considering how short that bench has gotten. Would love to see him build from where he left off before the injury.
. . . and it gives BU more options with Ty. If Ty is struggling at PG, then Nico can fill in. Ty is versatile, so he may be playing all positions at one point--especially if BU goes small.

I do understand your point, but this year, I feel the Illini can run the Terrapins out of the gym and cover the points. No trap game here; they know their history against Maryland.

It was the Spartan game that I was nervous about.
