Agree completely. It's a strange place. They had an inferiority complex for decades in the ACC v. Duke and Carolina (and even Virginia). Gary Williams was a great coach but, as you note, that class he had that won the NC was truly special and one-off. The sense of entitlement they have is baffling. I make the same point about Turge and his performance in the BT to Terp fans I know, to no avail.

It doesn't help that, despite Maryland being literally on the border of DC, Duke and UNC got way more love than they did. Growing up in DC there was one kid in my HS class that was a Maryland fan and he always got ripped on by everyone else. This despite the fact that it wasn't even 5 years after they won their title.

The absolute hatred they had for Turgeon will never make sense to me. The guy was 24-7 and won the league a season and a half before they ran him out of town. They have such an over-inflated sense of self. With all due respect, you're just Maryland. Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter, and Chris Wilcox aren't walking through that door. You caught lightning in a bottle once over 20 years ago. You're a competitive, but not an elite program. It's okay. But hey, you're now reaping what you've sowed.
While I agree with this I'll still always have a soft spot for the Scheyer Face guy and their hatred of Duke.

This has been Underwood's best coaching job. I was so underwhelmed by last year and was really not looking forward to this season. Keep it up

To be fair, it was BU's (and everyone else ftm) first real dip into the new era of CBB "free agency".

I give him and this staff a full pass for a few very solid talents that were clearly misses with team chemistry and personality.
Actions and words...I've always taught my son...and mentored young pilots. You can tell me what you are or what you'll do all day long...it doesn't amount to tee diddly squat until you show it.

BU and Co. clearly...clearly....know wtf they are doing...and we are seeing some talented transfers absolutely blow up because they are not just words...and their actions make BU and Co.'s job easier.

That's what you are seeing this year.

Past ACC mentality of entitlement ?

Yes. I didn't want to be unkind by noting that their inferiority complex historically hasn't had to do merely with athletic competition but also [relative] academic quality, which, as you know, is a big status deal to many people in DC. TBF, though, the large gifts the university has gotten during the past 10-15 years and the dramatic increase in the quality of facilities (esp. the engineering school) and the honors college had made it a much better university. The UVa/Duke/UNC crowd in DC still looks down on it but most everyone I know whose kids have attended within the past several years have spoken highly of their experience.

Also, TBF, their lacrosse and soccer, and women's BB, programs are Nat. Championship quality.

Hands down, however, College Park contains the ugliest college town strip I've seen at a Tier I research university, and I've seen a lot of 'em over the decades.

This makes me love UMD....if the entitled, intellectually arrogant UVa/Puke/UNC crown in DC trash the turtles, then that makes me lean toward the turtles.
Agreed that College Park itself is a toilet. And their inability to handle traffic for home basketball and football games is insane for a commuter school in a major metro area.

I think last year had less to do with coaching and more to do with personal. You have to remember last year was a real litmus test on the transfer portal. Underwood got it wrong and changed the type of guy he went after. Based on the results thus far he got it right this time.

Worth noting as bad as last year’s team was (and I genuinely did not enjoy watching that team) we still made the tourney.

Scott is always tough but I think Ty holds him down. The rest of their teams plays well at home but no so much on the road. I think if the Illini are all healthy on Sunday it is blow out time!

It's incredibly impressive that it both manages to be far better than it used to be and yet still truly awful. I honestly feel bad for them.
I haven't been to College Park, but I have a hard time believing it's strip could be worse than College Station.

I'd think it would be a Q assignment.

College Station has always sounded like my own personal heII so, yeah, it very well could be worse. College Park is basically a highway with three bars and a strip mall with a Chipotle. Plus, due to the lovely laws in Maryland, you can't buy beer in grocery stores. Though, to its credit, it does now have a few more ugly buildings on that highway. It's sad for a major East Coast institution that's right outside of a major city.

I haven't been to College Station but just visited it on Google Street View. If the strip is on University Avenue, then IMO it gives College Park a run for its money but exceeds it in beauty by a nose. Perhaps the lesson is that any town beginning with "College" is aesthetically doomed.

Never been to Lubbock, either. Street View makes it look similarly bleak. I'm sadistically pleased that Bob Knight sought exile there at Texas Tech.

~ 30 years ago I worked with a senior guy in our company. He was a laconic Texan and I was pathetically trying to make conversation with him after we met. I asked where he was from originally and he said "Lubbock." I noted that all I knew about it was that Tech was located there. I asked him what else was in Lubbock.

I'll never forget his answer: "The horizon."

Still cracks me up.

I’m extremely interested to see what Nico can bring to this team, hopefully this Sunday.

The biggest difference is that there's nothing around College Station so no competition. College Park is in one of the largest metro areas in the country and literally everywhere around there looks better by comparison.

Friendly reminder that we have over twice as many Final Fours as mighty Maryland! They do have a title, but the vast majority of their sense of entitlement comes from a 3-year stretch. Illinois has a much more impressive overall history by ALMOST every metric. And winning a title isn’t everything … Oregon isn’t a better program than us all-time just because they win a National Championship in the ‘40s, lmao.

Let’s smoke ‘em.

I went to Lubbock for a buddy's wedding. I asked the same question of a wedding guest - what's in Lubbock? His answer? "Miles and miles of miles and miles". He also said he could watch his dog run away for 3 days.

I just remember lots and lots of cotton fields.

A Championship in the last 25 years means a lot more than a Championship in the 40s.
