No matter how you want to color it we do not have a point gaurd in our starting line up. No one will convince me otherwise. We do have someone playing in the point gaurd position that is doing pretty well at keeping it from becoming too much of an issue with the help of others. Almost every time we play either the announcers or the desk guys will mention how we don't have a point gaurd but seem to be making it work for us.
Agree to disagree. College basketball is changing quickly and we don't need to be bound to traditional roles on a team, as is clearly demonstrated by our success on the court this year. We also don't have a traditional big center - we have a 6-10 stringbean named Coleman who brings so much more to the 5 spot.

It was Scott and Young that took it to us last year. Go Illini. Put the turtle in its shell.

I'm going with who Coach says the point guard is (Ty, obviously). Yes, others, including Domask, play that role sometimes. But the point is that what we are doing is WORKING and we should stop wringing our hands over having a "true PG", whatever that is.
Need to talk about the poor free throw shooting and lack of three point shooting.

? Ty has been pretty great from the free throw line in the last several games. He does not shoot 3 pointers, true, but facilitates for the others who do.
Believe the original post was sarcasm.

Kudos to the team for great improvements in both areas, but that topic was absolutely valid going into the season.

Never comfortable with Maryland. Only 2nd to Purdue as our nemesis.

Get on the glass, prepare to be bumped and keep our composure to take good shots, and break the press looking to score.

Good thing all these upsets are happening. I’m sure will use this as motivation!

Snowed in so doing some stat searching while at home…

Post-TJ stats:
Hawkins: 14.25ppg, 4.75rpg, 3apg, 2bpg, 48.5%fg, 52% from 3

Domask: 21ppg, 4.5rpg, 6.75apg, 47%fg

Harmon: 13.25ppg, 2.75rpg, 2apg, 50%fg, 57% from 3

Quincy: 14ppg, 9.25rpg, 51%fg

Ty: 8.25ppg, 5.25rpg, 2.25appg, 82%ft (!), 55%fg

Luke: 7ppg, 3.5rpg, 28% from three

Shot distribution:
Hawkins 35 shots (16.5%)
Domask 51 shots (24%)
Harmon 34 shots (16%)
Quincy 41 shots (19%)
Ty. 24 shots (11%)
Luke 27 shots (13%)

*NOTE*: Domask is taking 12.9 shots per game in the last 4, which is exactly equivalent to TJ’s 12.9 per game in his absence.

Balanced scoring, everyone contributing and stepping up. We already knew these things, but man is our top 6 still REALLY solid.

I honestly think Brad felt two conflicting things after the Houston loss:

1) A rightful sense of immense pride that we went from cellar dwellers when he got here to #1 seeds and Big Ten championship banners.

2) Frustrated that, as far as postseason play goes, all we had to show for an awesome 3-year run was one cancelled Tournament and two Second Round losses.

With all five starters set to graduate or move on, I think he made the call to try to keep this thing rolling with as much talent as possible. And to be fair, for a little while there it really did look like “Illinois “doesn’t rebuild, it just reloads.” Unfortunately, team chemistry did us in, and I think this year Brad is more grounded, more confident and more seasoned than ever. And it’s showing!

Definitely learned from his mistakes. Not only did they flame out, but I think they were hell to coach. You don't need talented preps with the transfer rules, although of course you'd love to have guys who develop and know your system. As good as this team is, imagine what Underwood and co would have if their AA was playing.
As much as it's been interesting the way transfer rules have changed things, the bonus Covid year has been a part of it too. Once all the super-seniors are gone, it should make it slightly better for the incoming freshmen to compete for minutes.

It's where you take your date to homecoming when your 16 because it seems fancy.

We don't have a true point guard but what we do have is guys that try to make the open pass. Domask, Hawkins, Ty and even Harmon (who's had 2 each game since suspension) We are ranked (I think) terrible in assist/TO ratio but I believe in a hockey assist (2 pass situation) we would be much higher.

Announcers bring it up because that was the preseason narrative, not because it’s an actual struggle of ours game to game.

We‘re the 7th ranked offense in the nation according to KenPom. In our last 2 losses, on the road at top 5 teams, we scored 79 & 78 points respectively. Offense hasn’t been our achilles heel this year, defense has.
