Michigan State 88, Illinois 80 Postgame

How does MD our best free throw shooter and arguably best scoring option not get a shot in the last 7:30 of the game. I know he had a TO, but you need to get him to the free throw line at the very least to stop the bleeding. I still can't get my head around the total collapse the last 8 minutes.
Because he hesitates on every 3 pt open look and is too slow all of a sudden. Earlier in the year he was very decisive and strong. The opponents have figured out how to defend him and he’s thinking too much. He’s waiting to see who is going to double him instead of beating the double.

the worst thing that happened to us was obliterating an awful Mizzou team, gave us unrealistic expectations. with that being said, this season is a complete failure if we dont make the second weekend of the tournament. I dont care if we run the table and win the conference regular season and tournament titles.

Great question ... I really don't have a good answer for you on that one ...

Adjustments need to be made ...

Brad choosing to give Goode extended run why Ty is on the bench is beyond baffling to me ... He is a defensive liability ... If he can't make catch and shoot threes ... He is providing nothing ...

I would have also liked to have seen more Dain today ...

I also am sick and tired of Domask being the only option bringing the ball up the floor ... Keep the defense guessing ... Hawkins ... DGL ... Ty ... Throw different looks at them ... Domask dribbles up and just tosses it high to Coleman every freaking time ... Hoggard figured it out ... Turnover and the game is over ...
Or offensive strategy is rinse and repeat and repeat and well you know

We didn’t lose by 2 or something. We were losing 88-80 when I lost the feed.

We took a bunch of jump shots with the lead. Missing jump shots is the best way to let a team back in a game.

Weren’t we up 9 when Goode missed the first of a 1 and 1?

Up 9 to down 8 in like 6 mins of game time?
That’s not bc some shots were “oh so close”
Agree. I find the original post Beckman-like. "If only our opponent hadn't scored those three touchdowns."

I can point to just as many if not more instances where Coleman's or TSJ's shot rang around the rim but then went in. Cherry picking only those that didn't go your way is not productive.

We are bad at defense now and have been for a while. We are ridiculously bad at layups and shots around the rim. We do a lot of other stuff very well but not enough to offset this.

Sorry for the gloom and doom but I was in bad mood after Nebraska and it's much worse today. Sweet Sixteen? I am wondering now about round 2, we seem primed for that small conference champion in the 12 spot that can shoot threes and has nothing to lose.

I made the remark that Hamer was a grad assistant as a joke. But he pretty much was one last year. Not sure how he deserved an assistant spot. And giving him so much responsibility immediately. Very confusing.

If it was me, I’d drop Hamer and pick up LaTulip, no questions asked. But BU appears to be hard headed and stubborn at times. I wouldn’t foresee a change anytime soon.
Latullip is so good on these game breakdowns. I have subscribed to 247 just for his play breakdowns. He is so great

100% agree. I don’t get the Goode over Ty thing.

Is Hamer calling the defense? Brad needs to shut that down

I like the kid, but he really hurt us at the end of the first half, when we blew a other 8 point lead. He's a target defensively and "booty ball" has been taken away offensively.
And since he plays 37-39 minutes/game- he's probably not playing his best the last few minutes of either half- gotta be a little bit tired. If QG wasn't playing poorly he could have subbed in for MD at times and kept him more fresh.

MD’s booty ball worked for a few games but other teams now know how to defend it. As a result it seems to really slow down our ball movement and often puts MD is a turnover precarious situation.
Booty ball still may work depending on match up. But, when it gets late in the season, there are no surprises. Everyone knows what you do.

That’s going to end up being Brad’s demise if we don’t get to at least the Sweet 16.
Yep. Exactly. But he put himself in that position. He was the one that chose the all-or-nothing approach there. Ray J or no one. It will be all the praise or all the blame on one person at the end of the year. It’s a huge gamble.

And for the record, I think Ty’s been better than expected. Just not a complete replacement for a true PG. And if I remember right, we still have a spare scholarship just sitting around…

If you are despair over the Illini basketball team losing a game, I suggest you work towards this glorious position I've found myself in.

Take joy in the love of the game, and extra joy in victory. Never let the outcome of a game or season impact your attitude which ends up putting those around you on their toes.

It's simply not my job, or yours to fix problems with a sports team, so it shouldn't put me in a mood that is noticeable to those around me.

This sounds like how you deal with kids....not your fanaticism of the Illini!/s\

My suggestion?

I was very vocal about him and one other guy when the announcement was made that we could add 2 more assistant coaches ...

Brad promoted Hamer and his kid ... Which to be fair ... Tyler has done a good job ...

I would also pay an absurd amount of money to get Gentry back ... FWIW ...
What are the rules on consulting? Hamer does not seem to be a strategist.

One QUESTION? How does an offensive player bang the defender in the chest 3-4 times and NEVER get called for a foul? Then the defender breathes on the guy and gets called. We are not playing hockey or football. This is BULL SIT! That is a charging foul. The Refs need to call it!

The 2nd thing I want to point out is; Everyone keeps talking how good we are defensively- That is CRAP TOO! In the 5 of 6 games the Illini have lost they have been totally manhandled on the inside; MSU-38 ILL 22, MARYLAND-52-ILL 26, NW. 46, ILLINI 38, Marquette 44 Illini 20, Tenn. 38 Illini 24 The only game they lost that they were even inside was Purdue 34-34 That sounds like a sieve to me. The other teams are getting shots close to the basket and the Illini are throw up bombs from 30 feet! This team is soft and they will not make past the 1st round again this year!

You are probably right and most of us would be wise to heed this advice.

But with passion comes suffering and suffering isn't always easy to hide. See Hawkins, Coleman.
