Illinois 95, Iowa 85 Postgame

The crowd and Krush were the best they have been this year (I think I’ve missed 2-3 games).

Obviously we scored a ton of points, but still need to figure out how to get stops. We didn’t get hardly any transition points except near the end when the defense picked up and we got some run outs. We should really be pounding that into the guys heads - want to get out and run? Have to play defense.

We were sitting behind the basket at the South end of the stadium where the students were and we noticed that the students rolled out this curtain when Iowa went to the free throw line. The woman in back of us was laughing so hard. Did anyone else notice the curtain as well and see what they were doing? :ROFLMAO:

Way better than you'd expect. He did get absolutely bodied on a drive to the basket, but he fought through screens and held his own. Now, can he do that against more athletic guards? That's the question. Inarguably, the effort was there, though.
If he can that will put him ahead of several of our other guys.

I was ok to try no PG to begin the season, but we absolutely need a PG. Nico's first breakout and injury game vs southern was some of the best ball we've played. Also, the game after TJs suspension. Granted weak competition, but you could see the potential. Everything isn't about buckets and coach's kids PGs are handy. I want Nico to shove it down Braden Smiths throat too. Buckle up

Good move, Coach got their attention, every game for the rest of the year requires maximum effort! Good job TEAM!
Has anyone ever seen an entire starting lineup subbed for all at the same time other than when the outcome has already been decided near the end of the game? not sure if I've ever seen it before today, with an illini team or any other team. Not knocking it as I think it was a good decision by BU, just genuinely curious

I was at the game today. Moretti provided the spark that we needed. CH really took control of the game. Shannon played really good D in the second half. A few bonehead plays, the one to end the 1st half where Iowa took the Hail Mary pass and scored where we could’ve just tipped the ball away and Domask’s heave at the end of the game instead of maybe calling a timeout. However, those plays didn’t cost us. The crowd was pretty loud and into it. Great atmosphere.
agree. loved the N-I-T! N-I-T! chants by krush too

Agreed it was definitely one of the better games of the year crowd noise wise. Something that stood out was the big response when the starters got pulled in the 2nd, rightfully so.

I've seen it happen a few times but it's a fairly rare occurrence. I've seen Izzo, Weber, and Knight do it to I want to say usually not positive effects followed by a presser where you get the standard, I'm going to play the guys that are going to work their tails off on the court. Generally from what I recall in those games, you're already down and you take the loss with the hopes that your players respond the next few games. I want to say this is the only time I've seen it work as well as it did. Usually you don't win games when you have to resort to doing this. Now the question is how the team is going to come out against Minnesota.

I will say, it was a gutsy call by Underwood, because if it hadn't worked and we started getting blown out and the starters still didn't respond, there would have been a lot of ugly questions at the presser and questions about whether he lost the team. So he did take a pretty sizable risk there in my opinion, and really happy that it worked out, obviously. He made the right call in my opinion, but it definitely isn't the easiest call to make and there can be a ton of consequences. He definitely pulled the right strings in this one.

I love that BU at least tried some different lineups tonight- that was huge and maybe he found a spark for this team.

The defense in the second half was much improved but we still need to change something there- we have no interior D and CH hasn’t been interested in playing D for a couple of months now. Maybe start going under screens and give up the longer shots?

All the time. Frequently used by "old school" coaches. I know that Knight did it a number of times, (as did my HS coach).

Extremely common.

Better Defense late, but you’re right it’s still a concern. Always tough though to keep an Iowa team from scoring. Fran knows offense.
True but you'd think after one of Brad's famous practices, the starters would've been more locked in on the defensive side. But, clearly they weren't until the line change in the 2nd half. It's not good but we'll take the win

I really want to be able to look back at that second half in a few weeks and say that is when we returned to the team we saw before the TJ suspension. It feels like maybe just maybe.

Before the suspension, before morretti injury, before Amani bad back….

Looked like the band of old
