I just don't get why Ty can't shoot a free throw line jumper once in a while. He usually gets to the line every game. That should be not that uncomfortable for him that he won't take one while in the offense if he is left open.
I am with you here... Even Chester chucked up 3 pointers when they would not guard him... In the the pregame shoot arounds all Ty does is practive his push up shots and free throws. I love this guys hustle but he has to at least make an attempt to do more shooting the ball..

I did see Tyson Walker try this today and Edey recovered to block it. He does have length, after all.
Big difference is Walker doesn't look to make contact.. I can guarantee you on that drive last night if it was Shannon driving he would have known exactly where Edey was and would have purposely tried to make contact with him to draw a foul and possible and1

I would give anything to have BBV back for this game... His effort 2 years ago on Edey was fun to watch.. Dreaming a little but would be nice to see Dain on him and see Dain keep him 7-8 feet away from the basket and make him work harder and give our guards time to try to double up on him.. But as some mentioned earlier if the refs allow him to stay in the post 5-6 seconds every time then there is no stopping him.. Hate him put offensively he is just to good.

If Ty is playing Edey will have him, but he won't actually guard him. He will just play deep. If Ty drives, Edey will be waiting, same for Domask. Going to need 5 shooters. If Dain is playing, he will have to take it right to Edey.

Expert coach here obviously.
Terence and Marcus both go at Edey...attack and dish and go for his body

I feel much more confident about this game than before & esp after the Whisky game, and not just because it is at home.

I simply can't reconcile that people would post on a message board like this but not spend 5.99 on a month of Peacock for this game.

I happily spent 30 dollars the day after Thanksgiving to have Peacock for a year. 10 dollars per Illini game? Sure, for just 3 of them. Also, my wife and I are currently enjoying Everybody Loves Raymond again because of it.
Just because we complain about a game like this getting paywalled doesn’t mean we don’t end up paying to watch it 😉.

Boy, he missed some bunnies last time out. I mean absolute bunnies. He got anywhere he wanted. I thought he was in his own head. Quite honest, I think him and Quincy are too nice around the rim. I thought Kofi was the same way.

I can’t remember if it was Daddy Brad or someone else who said something to the effect of, “you’re 6’6+” just dunk the @&$! ball!”

I agree, for the most part we are soft at the rim, probably more defensively than offensively, but soft would describe it.

Yea...but if Shannon is going downhill with great speed, more than likely Edey will be trailing the play and TJ will be shooting layups
I'm assuming he's playing drop coverage and basically just sitting in front of the basket in which case I'm letting Shannon attack him over and over again. Edey is going to end up in foul trouble real quickly playing that way.

If Edey tries to come out then yes TSJ would simply blow by him. Pulling Edey out of getting in foul trouble also goes along way to open up the inside for Domask to go to work.

LOL would love to feel confident in this, but Edey is rarely whistled for fouls (or lane violations for that matter). I think he averages something absurd, like under 3 fouls per 40 minutes. He has not fouled out even one time this season and only has 2 games where he had 4 fouls. For a player who spends 98 percent of his time on the court camped in the lane and looks awkward and off balance as much as he does to only be called for 2 fouls per game is pure insanity to me. He's going to be allowed to camp in the lane on both offense & defense and will be given the benefit of doubt for pushes/shoves, over-the-back, falling down on top of a guy, you name it.

I'll take some heat for this take, I'm sure, but he is officiated basically the opposite of how Kofi was. It almost seemed like when Kofi played that they actively tried to even the playing field with their whistles. Edey is larger than Kofi and also is far slower and more clumsy in his movements, less in control of his own body than Kofi was yet gets called for roughly half the amount of fouls.

I worked in a juco athletics dept and had an office just steps off the gym floor. One morning, probably around 2009, 2010 possibly, I could hear an individual basketball workout, but I didn't recognize the voice giving instruction so I walked out into the hall to investigate. I was shocked to see Rick Majerus feeding bounce passes to one of our post players (Our assistant had played for him as SLU). After a series of about 5 - pass, drop step, layup, relocate, pass, etc. - Majerus had been giving feedback about the player's feet, staying low, move to the ball, etc. but suddenly stopped the drill. He looked at the player and said "Son, can you dunk the ball?" "Yes, sir" the player somewhat timidly replied. "Then dunk that mother fu#k@r!"

I’m more confident in this game against Purdue for four reasons:

1). TSJ is back and playing his best basketball
2). We’re at home
3). Ty was supposedly under the weather at Purdue. This game is his chance to prove that was an aberration and he’s up to the task.
4). We figured things out and settled down in the second half and made a great run.

Would be nice to have another big man to throw at Edey although Coleman does a fantastic job of staying out of foul trouble against bigger guys. I don't see us putting Dain on Edey if we can avoid it.

Also, I noticed a simple back screen on Edey would have prevented the block or caused him to run over the screener. Just need a coordinated attack on him.

I hope our staff can get creative in neutralizing Edey’s paint presence and get fouls on him.

Just me....and my College Basketball Coaching For Dummies book.....but I would pick and roll at Edey with Domask and CoHawk/Dainja for the first 10 minutes until Edey got two fouls or Domask has 20. Whichever came first.

If we use our bench smartly this could be a great win for us.

I’d like to see Ty drive on Edey get him off balance then look to make contact and draw a foul- Inthink that could be very effective- Edey can’t stay in front of him so as long as Ty looks for contact it should be an easy call- them forces Painter to adjust and put Edey on someone else. There is no good matchup for Edey to guard, we need to take advantage of that

Don’t think we will see very much Ty against Purdue. Just a bad matchup for him.
Not a good matchup for sure as the thing Purdue does best pretty much neutralizes him. That said, I think Ty's playable if he has a much different approach than in the first game. In the 1st game, he'd give up the ball immediately at the 3pt line while nobody was guarding him. Instead, he needs to take that ball and drive it straight into Edey, and find the open cutter in likely Quincy, who absolutely destroyed his man offball in the first meeting. Edey was too slow laterally to recover to guard Guerrier if he beats his man offball and is forced to either give up a layup or foul.

Now the reason I'm even bringing this up is that if Ty isn't on the floor defensively, we'd really need Harmon to stay tethered to his man, or Goode to lock in when he's in, and both have had some major issues with that in games this year. As well, when Ty's off the floor, an already elite Purdue rebounding team starts dominating the boards, so if Ty isn't responsible for Renn or Gillis, there is a giant drop off there. And giving Purdue 2nd chance opportunities is playing with gasoline and a flamethrower.

So while this certainly isn't a good matchup for Ty, we're probably still going to need minutes out of him, and he can be effective in those minutes but he has to come in with a different mindset from the first game and play smart.
