If we MUST stray from the heart of Big Ten Country, I really think these are the only truly viable options on paper:I suspect it may be in Los Angeles. Or maybe Las Vegas. But that just a (reasonably educated) guess.
1. Indianapolis - Obvious choice. Has hosted it extremely well, centrally located for many schools and the area around the stadium is truly a great setup. Downtown Indianapolis has got to be one of the more underrated downtowns of a mid-to-large sized city that I have ever been to.
---> Primary beneficiaries are Indiana and Purdue. Secondary beneficiaries are mainly Illinois, MSU and OSU.
2. Chicago - Also an obvious choice. While the area around the UC is much worse than Indy, Chicago overall provides fans in town for a longer weekend with a bit more to do. Additionally, there are SO many Big Ten alumni in the area that attendance has consistently been better than anywhere else.
---> Primary beneficiary is Illinois. Secondary beneficiaries are mainly Northwestern, Indiana, MSU, Purdue, Wisconsin and Iowa.
3. New York - MSG will always have a certain appeal, and New York is simply one of a kind. Also a lot of Big Ten alumni there and provides even more to do for a long weekend than Chicago.
---> Primary beneficiary is Rutgers. Secondary beneficiaries are Maryland, Indiana, PSU and Wisconsin (mostly due to alumni being from around there).
4. Los Angeles - Throwing a bone to the West Coast schools (especially UCLA and USC) and a warm weather trip for conference fans who are stuck in the cold.
---> Primary beneficiaries are UCLA and USC. Secondary beneficiaries are Washington and Oregon.
5. Las Vegas - Sounds "random," but it will be an absolute event each year it's there. You know why Illini fans absolutely took over Vegas last year? Because it's a frickin' easy and fun place to visit for 2-3 nights, haha. Every major fan base would bring a large contingent.
---> I would say primary beneficiary is UCLA, but ... we literally played a home game vs. them in Las Vegas, lol. It will pretty much just benefit whatever teams are good, as fans will travel from all over. I suspect Illinois will be among the top 3-4 fan bases year in and year out.
Anywhere else is just dumb. The one year we had it in DC was a total flop, and attendance seems to rely more on Maryland there than Chicago does on Illinois or Indy does on Indiana/Purdue. Minneapolis is nothing more than a favor to that city, as it just makes no sense for anyone but the Gophers ... same logic applies to Detroit, Cleveland, Omaha, Philadelphia, etc.
