My rooting system:

I want every ranked team to win every game except ours (to be ranked as high possible before and after our game) and I want every unranked team to lose every game before us (to demoralize them) and against us, then win every game after us (to improve the quality of the win).

So for example, in a game like Michigan and Minnesota, where we play both teams later in the year, my system calls for a Michigan win because they’re ranked and we want them to stay ranked and a Minnesota loss because they’re unranked and we want them demoralized.

If you have a situation where we have played one team already and won, so you would normally root for them to keep winning, but they’re playing a team we have yet to play, root for the team that provides the best case scenario in the future game.

Based on the above system, this week I’m rooting for:

Oregon against Michigan St
Wisconsin against Purdue
Indiana against Northwestern
Nebraska against Rutgers (though this one is dicey since Rutgers is receiving votes so I would understand a Rutgers rooting preference to go for a ranked match up later this year)
Michigan against Washington
USC against Minnesota

Indiana has had a nice schedule for a new coach. Hope Pu gets blasted. Then gets blasted by the Illini. Look at PSU schedule game 5 no road game. Finally Mich goes on the road. Some good games this weekend.

If we are still harboring delusions of grandeur and shooting for the playoff, this philosophy might be altered. An Indiana loss would be beneficial to us even though I enjoy Northwestern reverting to the mean at its rightful place bottom of the conference.

So I know Wisconsin lost their QB, but through 1 1/3 seasons with Fickell are they more in “if you squint you can see what it will look like” mode or “concerned” mode? I would go the latter. Think there’s too much talent on that team to be 10-8 though 18 games.

Based on that graphic posted in last month's Illini football thread I wish we had a rematch against them this year.

Chez Mellusi - Gone

Looking at their schedule... they probably won't even make a bowl this year. They're 2-2 and PSU, Oregon, @RU, @NEB, @ Iowa are all tough ones with they way their roster and season has gone.

So far it's been pretty much a "stepback" considering some of the past years.

When we play NU, it will essentially be a home game for us or at least a neutral crowd (Wrigley Field)

It was in the vicinity of 50/50 last time. I will be interested to see how well our side can turn out.

I will do my part 🫡
We will also be there. 🍻 I think without the ticket games NU played last time (more on that below) and if both teams continue a somewhat similar trajectory until then, I think it will be a much, much more pro-Illini crowd than in 2010.

Also, while I think 50/50 is probably correct for the 2010 game, two things are worth remembering for other fans who were not there (I was, and I assume you were!).

1. It was pretty cold, and a lot of Illini fans were in navy. When you analyze a brighter photo of the crowd that day, you actually notice slivers of orange or orange stocking hats on fans that your eye might initially assume were in dark Northwestern colors.

2. Northwestern did EVERYTHING possible to make that a pro-NU crowd. Multiple factors played into this:

(A) IIRC (I was in college and went with my family, and my dad bought the tickets), it was not quite as easy to get tickets on StubHub back then. I could be wrong on this, but it does not really matter either way.

(B) Since it was SUCH a novelty compared to their later games there vs. Purdue in 2021 or Iowa last year, tickets were actually in really high demand and quite expensive. As a reminder to everyone, College Gameday was onsite, and the idea of playing at Wrigley was still incredibly new and exciting.

(C) Since it was a Northwestern home game, they were only on the hook to give Illinois 3,000 tickets. So, theoretically, the crowd would have started at a baseline of 7.5% Illinois fans, haha.

(D) Most importantly, Northwestern actually made it so the ONLY way you could get tickets to that game beyond getting your 3,000 from the DIA was to either buy a Northwestern season ticket or find one (for a lot of money) on the secondary market.

And despite all of that, Illinois had about half the crowd...

... and ALL of the rooftop seats. :ROFLMAO:

Hilarious dichotomy of the colors in that photo behind the NU student section.

TL;DR

1. I think Wrigley will be pretty damn orange this November.

2. I encourage anyone on the fence to go. Partying in Wrigleyville and going to watch the Illini smoke the Kitty Cats at Wrigley?!?! Cannot beat that.

A friend and I found out after the game that part of the reason it was so skewed towards NU was that the Cubs' head of PR at the time was a Northwestern grad. There were a bunch of other NU grads sprinkled through the front office for that reason, and they were also trying to make it a super pro-Wildcat crowd. (My friend and I were in law school at the time, and when someone from the Cubs came in to speak to us about legal careers in sports, we took the opportunity to speak to him after his talk. He spilled the tea.)

I was there too . 50/50 is about right . we were more vocal as we had more to be excited about that game .

that was the first game there . perhaps the novelty for them has diminished & it will be more like 55/45 or 60/40 in our favor
