I love seeing this, seeing any time the beloved are ranked.
But I would appreciate an explanation.
I understand how we can move up 4 spots when we don't play.
Others move down.

But how does our defensive rating move up 2 points?
That must be something other than what I'm guessing it is.
Thanks in advance

Most of these algorithms work by doing a mathematical regression to the full season's worth of data. When more data come in, the output changes for every team. A simple way to think about it is that while we didn't play, we learned a bit more about Kansas's, CMU's, Nebraska's, and Penn State's offenses. Based on all of that, our defense looks slightly better than they did before, and not just relative to other teams' defenses.

A simple example is Kansas. When we beat them it was a ranked win at home. As they've shown themselves to be a mediocre 1-5 team, our win isn't as impressive. The computer rankings account for that by considering our win over Kansas as we see them now, not how we saw them in Week 2.

Walters did not inherit a trainwreck like Bret did. Purdue fans gave gotten used to being at .500 or better. I think the buyout is big enough to protect him for 2 more years.

Yeah, we really need to do that. Of course a loss would be disastrous, but even a close win would taint us in the national media and computer modeling eyes relative to Purdue's recent huge losses. If we want to maintain national relevance as historically Wisconsin and Iowa have had, and this year (gag) Indiana has, then this needs to be a curb stomp.
It would be really nice if this game turned into an Orange and Blue party in the fourth quarter.

The black backdrop fits Waters’ tone, like a really sad funeral. He says they’ve “struggled to play from behind”, so let’s bury them early and don’t let up until the dirt is heaped high on the grave. Then shift to second and third string guys.

So glad we aren't having to read articles like this today about U of I coaches. We've read plenty of UI-related articles like this in the past 15-years.

I was like an 11th level black belt at coaching search punditry 5 years ago. I'm getting rusty. It's all your fault Josh Whitman!

that was hard to listen to .
I bailed after 5 minutes
Actually I thought Walters was a bit hard to listen to when he was our DC. But then came Saturday and that defense performed in his second year.

Between 2011 and 2019 or so, we unfortunately all got too good at discussing coaching changes. Never a fun thing given we had two men's basketball changes, four football changes (from Zook to Beckman to Cubit to Lovie to FINALLY Bielema), and even women's basketball.

Man, Mike Thomas was a train wreck. Whitman also didn't cover himself in glory with the Lovie hire either, but he's made up for it after that.

Lovie the coach was a huge disappointment. Lovie the recruiter brought some great talent. I prefer to remember that part.

And let's not forget culture change. Perhaps the real reason Lovie was brought in?
I believe this was the primary reason he was brought in. No way to know if returning to the college game after such a long absence was going to work. We all certainly hoped it would bring wins, but perhaps leaving us with a decent cadre of high potential players was the best we could hope for. It's all seeming to work out at the moment.

Forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere, but are we still shooting off a Cannon in the SE corner after wevscore?

Will have an infant in our group in section 111 and was wondering for that reason.

Made it to EIU, and Kansas. Former had Cannon, latter didn’t. Thanks in advance!

Yes. A cannon was fired at the last game. It was definitely not as loud as the first game cannon though.

I remember hypothesizing if Jeff Monken would bring the option offense to Illinois at the end of the Lovie era....

Now here's a throwback conversation! There was a couple hypothetical conversations and there were folks preferring to watch a traditional scheme and lose 7-9 games/year than more success with unconventional.
